Letting A Load Off

How is it that it is now 11:30pm, I am still awake, and I don’t feel the slightest bit tired? Seriously, what’s going on here? Who’s taking over my granny-self?

Hey, whatever the reason, I’ll take advantage of this opportunity to show you what I chowed on today…

As I mentioned earlier, Jay and I were heading out to spend the day with some good friends and family. A little later in the evening, Jay and I went with our friends, Joe & Kate, for dinner at a local place called Swifty’s Pub.

There’s always plenty of good laughs when the four of us get together…obviously. Smile

Swifty’s had quite the extensive menu, and the four of us were pretty hungry, so we decided to quickly order some Buffalo Chicken Dip.

I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m a total baby when it comes to spicy foods. After about two attempts at the dip, I threw in the towel…my poor taste buds just couldn’t handle the heat! That doesn’t mean, however, that I didn’t do my fair share of damage with the homemade chips. Winking smile

Then, dinner came. Can ya check out those sweet potato fries my friends? Tell me that is not one serious pile. A little sandwich with those fries?? Winking smile

I ordered the Tuscan Chicken Sandwich, which was a grilled chicken breast, topped with roasted red peppers, mozzarella cheese, and pesto mayo (which I got on the side, but was quite tasty).

Tonight’s dinner tasted great going down, but has left me feeling a little blah. I ate probably 95% of what you see above on that plate there…fries and all. In fact, there was not one food that I ate from home today; well, unless we count the few licks of leftover frosting this afternoon…

Ughh, I’m a mess.

I realize that my eating habits as of late have become much more lax. Things like sweet potato fries have been no stranger these days, and unfortunately, not only are my pants starting to feel it, but my body is starting to feel it too. However, these past couple weeks, a lot of it, actually, can be attributed to stress eating.

Many of you have noticed that I’ve been posting a lot more from home during the week days and have asked whether or not I’m on vacation or if I’m still working (you guys sure are observant…I like it). While it’s not something that I want to dwell on here, the fact is, I’m not working. As it turns out, my job loss came sooner than expected, and I am no longer teaching.

It’s been an extremely hard and emotional couple weeks for me, which I’ve tried hard to keep under wraps. I’ve alluded to some “down” moments a few times, but haven’t been quite ready to talk about it. To be honest, it’s been hard. Really hard. I miss my students terribly. I miss the daily routine. I miss a lot.

And how do I cope? I eat. You know how when some people get really stressed out they don’t eat or can’t eat? Yup, well, I’m just the opposite. I go to town. And hey, since I’m being really honest here…

Remember how I gave up sweets after dinner for Lent? Well, that went right out the window the day I got the news that I was losing my job within the next three days. I feel awful about it, but at the time, it was one of the last things on my mind. Sure I didn’t have to tell you guys…who would have known, right? But it would be worse to lie about it, rather than not committing to it at all, you know?

So, wow. There it is. I guess maybe this is why I’m still up at this late hour? To finally let a load off and fill you guys in on the real deal. I’m not quite sure what’s ahead for me, but I do know that it’s no excuse to keep goin’ balls to the walls with my sweet potato fries…that’s for sure!

I’ve got to get my life in order, figure out where I’m meant to be and what I’m meant to do. There is a plan for me…I know it. There’s a reason I’ve been placed in this situation. Now I just have to figure out why and what to do with it.

And to think…I thought this post was just going to be about a day with good friends and a big ‘ol plate of sweet potato fries. Winking smile

As always, thanks for listening reading, my friends. Smile

Oh girl I totally feel ya! I just posted about emotional eating the other night because it is something I’ve struggled with a lot over the past couple years. I can only imagine how hard it is too no longer be able to do something you love. I’m sure it will get better and I’m sure an opportunity will present itself that you never even imagined! It says a lot about your character that you’ve been able to keep the smile, even during the rough times. And don’t feel bad about 11:30. It’s nearly 1:00 AM and I should be asleep. But of course, I’m up worrying :-) Stay strong- I’m sure something amazing is just around the corner!

I don’t blame you for being down or emotional eating- you’re human after all. Losing a job is not easy at all especially when it’s not expected. The fact that you’ve realised you are comfort eating and aware that something bigger is in store for you is a huge step. Stay strong, it will all make sense eventually. Im sure I’m not alone when I say thanks for still maintaining a positive attitude in your blog and making it enjoyable and light-hearted to read.

I hardly commet, but am an avid reader 😉 but I feel the need to comment. I can just sit here and tell you I am sorry and too stay strong, but I dont have to, because from reading your blog for almost a year now, I know you are so strong. You have such a wonderful personality and everytime I come to your blog, whether I am having a bad day or not, I always leave in a happy smiley mood. You have encouraged me to make a healthier life style for myself, and when I just dont feel like working out, or have had it with my veggies, you always remind me that life is a learning process, we are meant to learn and grow every day, and too never give up! I know you will get through this, and have bigger and better things come your way, people who actually appericiate all that you do and how dedicated to your students you are! You are strong my dear:)

Courtney, you’re a very inspiring and honest woman and it’s very commendable of you in telling us the truth in everything you’re going through and we’ll all always be here to “listen” to you :) Losing your job, especially one you really love, is one of the hardest things you’ll go through and though you’ll go through some rough spots like emotional eating, those things will just make you stronger and help you to push through the tough times. I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason and eventually everything will come together for you…you have a passion for baking and children, maybe you can make the two come together somehow? Either way, you have a drive and personality that will take you places and you will succeed in the end. Good luck to you, and remember all of us here in the blogosphere are for you :)

It’s hard to not be doing something you love so much anymore but you are a strong woman and things will only get better from here on in. Everything is a learning experience to make you become a wiser woman with everything that you have in store for you. No one will judge you for emotional eating because we’ve all been there and done that. I love the cute pictures of you all, so much delicious food :)

Hi Courtney :) I love your blog and follow it daily :) I enjoy reading about you and your days. I am so sorry to hear about your job loss and stress eating! I can relate and spent TOO MANY years following the same pattern. It took many years but I have overcome my overeating and stressed eating. You are in my thoughts. Hang in there girl, something great will come along for you :) Take care.

I rarely comment, but I just had to after reading such a heartfelt and honest post! I too will be losing my teaching job come June. I am already so sad about this, and my eating habits have definitely been taking a hit-more “snacky” and processed food.

Combined with the fact that I also have NO idea what my next step will be as far as work goes, I feel your pain when it comes to stress eating. I am definitely not the girl who “loses her appetite” when she is stressed! My body is feeling it lately-I don’t feel like myself.

Anyways, I wanted to let you know that you are not alone and I so admire you for sharing your struggles and making ME feel like I am not alone either. This weekend I made an attempt to eat 3 square meals a day and eliminate snacking. Better, but I still have a long way to go.

    You are amazing!

Hi Court! I just wanted to let you know that I totally feel you. 2 years ago when I didn’t get the teaching job I was expecting, I spent my unemployment watching every episode of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, which pretty much just made me more depressed. Last September I ended up unemployed again, but I dealt with it a little better, after I cried non-stop for days. I don’t know if unemployment is harder for people who are teachers, but I do know how hard it is to be away from students and how much we miss them. The only advice I can give is to apply everywhere, be patient, take “temporary” positions (sometimes they end up being permanent) and try to do something constructive with your new free time. You’ll pull through. Every time I’ve been out of work, its been because something even better was waiting for me. If you want to talk more, you know where to find me :)

    Court –

You have a huge support system with your great husband and loving family. They will get you throughthis. Everything happens for a reason. The man upstairs will guide you in the right direction.

Maybe you need to sell your cupcakes and cookies at the farmers market? ? ? Just an idea :-)

  11. says

Hey Courtney, just wanted to say I hope you won’t be too hard on yourself – what you and I might automatically call ‘stress eating’ might just be your body’s way of saying you’re tired, and sometimes taking a break from routine and what you’re used to is not always such a bad thing. Did you ever see Eat Pray Love? Maybe not everyone’s cup of tea – but I love Julia Roberts – and I loved that book, and film! (my mum too!)

If you know the scenes or chapters about Italy you’ll understand what I mean – just gorgeous, indulgent Italian food – sometimes doing things for the sheer indulgence and the pleasure is good for the soul – who cares if you gain a few pounds? They’ll go again. The important thing is to be happy – the best beauty enhancer is a smile and when you finally feel right within, everything else shines out. After all, a lovely lady like you, will always aim for a healthy lifestyle and find a way to inspire others to do so, so if life takes you somewhere else for a little while it’s okay! Focus on your heart and look after yourself – your eating habits and everything else will fall into place. Personally, I find your body has a way of telling you what it needs (for me, it’s usually more sleep – and I’m trying better to listen!) For what it’s worth, I think you are beautiful and I know your friends and loved ones would think so too whatever changes go on in your life for the short-term – hope that is not too personal and I wish you lots of relaxation and room for you to recover. You’ll get through it 😉

    Best wishes,

    Hi Courtney,

I’m another avid reader (started reading about two months ago) who has yet to comment. I am sorry about your job (my mom was just let go herself) but I think that you’ve got a great mindset and outlook on life. There definitely IS a plan for you! I am an emotional eater as well and something that has helped for me is to try to break goals down into smaller pieces. For instance, 40 days of Lent would probably just add MORE stress for me on top of everything else that’s going on, but if I focus on getting through each week or even each night, it makes things a lot easier. Maybe this is something that could help with the stress eating.

I also want to say that you are really an inspiration to me in balancing eating healthy/exercising and baking! Those are my passions as well, which sound a little conflicting – hence making the discovery of your blog even sweeter! Nice to find someone after my own heart :) I always look forward to checking for updates!

Oh Courtney, I am so so sorry! I have never EVER heard of a school releasing a RIF’ed teacher before the end of the school year. Doesn’t that go against your teaching contract? I’m RIF’ed too – still waiting to hear what’s going to happen for work next year.. and you’re right, it is stressful. I don’t necessarily feel stressed, but my body sure does. I hope everything works out for you!

      Hi Chelsey and Courtney,
I was also wondering about being released before the end of the school year? I’m a teacher too, but have been out of the classroom to facilitate 2 grants that will not be renewed, so I am also unemployed as of the end of June. Will there be any teaching jobs where you are? Not too many to apply for in my part of the US! Good luck and hang in there!

    • says

i thought the same thing, chelsey. it almost seems CRUEL of the school to pull her from a class full of students that know and likely love their teacher in the MIDDLE of the school year. i can’t even imagine! what did they do with your students? were they divided into different classes? that seems so disruptive to their lives. clearly don’t know much about teaching, the confines of education budgets, etc., but to me it seems like your school should really reevaluate things. i feel for you and just KNOW something wonderful is in store for you! keep your head up courtney! :)

That sucks about your job. Especially to leave without finishing out the year. I’m sure that your students are missing you everyday. Hopefully everything will work out for you. I just came across your blog, and I love it :). I think it’s great that you are getting your feelings on paper (on screen?), maybe it will be somewhat therapeutic? I think all of us emotionally eat at one time or another. I used to feel so guilty doing it, but I know that if I make up for it later in the week with good foods, and exercise, I will be okay. Good luck with your job search. I’m graduating college in three weeks and I don’t have a job lined up, or know exactly what I want to do, so I know how stressful it can be!

On the bright side, he now has 2 jobs both of which he loves. He’s doing better than before. he could give up the personal training job but he loves it so much he decided after he got the other job and started to do well to continue to train cause he loves helping people so much. Oh, and keep eating those sweet potato fries and desserts after dinner if it makes you feel better. :)

Im so sorry to hear about your job. That must be incredibly tough, but I know you can pull through! and maybe there is something better right around the corner! I believe everything happens for a reason (although at the time, I usually dont listen to it haha)

    Just curious-
How could they let you go in the middle of the year? I am a teacher in Ohio and that doesn’t happen…any chance for a long term sub position?

It got sort of complicated, but unfortunately that’s how it ended up. No signs of any long term sub positions, so we’ll see what happens…

Just reading this now and so sorry to hear about your job. I can’t believe they laid you off mid-year! I was wondering what was up, but wanted to respect your privacy. I’m glad you’re hanging in there. Don’t be too hard on yourself and take it in stride. With your positivity, I’m sure you are going to come out on the other side of this 100% ok. HUGS!!!

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your job. I wish I could give you a hug in person. I am also a stress and emotional eater . Some people can’t eat when they’re stressed. I’m the complete opposite. You are such a good person. Something wonderful is just around the corner. I “feel” it.

The only thing I want to say is my mantra that I repeat when going through a tough time….

“If god brings you to it, then he will bring you through it”. I am not an overly religious person but I believe that everything happens for a reason and this brings me comfort when life hands me lemons.

I’m such an emotional eater! I think its something that a lot of people struggle with, no matter what weight or body type you are at. I’m so sorry about your job :( I know it will be hard for awhile, especially because you weren’t prepared for it to happen so quickly, but I think in the end, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Enjoy the beautiful weather that’s coming and know you have so many people who genuinely care about you in your life! Hopefully I’ll be seeing you in the next few weeks <3

    Hey Courtney,

Thanks so much for sharing. I’m really sorry you lost your job. I’ve been unemployed for four months now and can totally relate to the boredom, depression, and stress-eating. I agree with everyone else that’s commented: your blog is amazing. You seem like a great, cheerful, beautiful person. The blog world is better with your words involved. Please keep writing and staying positive.

    We’re all rooting for you!
