Old Fashioned Apple Bread

Old Fashioned Apple Bread! (see recipe below)

old fashioned apple bread

Ohhh, yesterday was such a great day! Beautiful weather, day off of work, entire day with my hubby, yummy food, and awesome shopping finds. A total winner, if ya ask me.

We started off our day with a nice big breakfast. Eating breakfast out has to be one of my favorite things ever, but we hardly ever get the chance to go so this was great. We decided on The Eatery at Carol’s Place which we’ve been to a couple of times.

I opted for a 2-egg scramble with spinach, onions, and tomatoes with wheat toast and fresh fruit. Ohmygod it was sooo good. I need a breakfast like this every. single. day. If only.

After breakfast we were off to Massachusetts to visit the Lee Outlets!

The two of us spent about five hours at the outlets, walking through all sorts of different stores and trying on lots of different clothes.

That was one outfit I didn’t buy but kinda wishing I had.

Before heading back home for the day, we stopped in the food court to grab some lunch. A turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, cheddar, apples, and honey mustard did the trick for me.

It was a big sandwich, but all that shopping worked up quite an appetite so polishing that monster off was no problem-o. Then it was time to hit the road with all of our goods!

Speaking of goods…

I made out SO much better than I had anticipated (I really, truly needed to update my wardrobe), and found all sorts of new, fun spring items.

On the left is VanHusen (which was a totally unexpected store all together – I had no idea they’d have anything I liked?!) and on the right is Gap.

Then there was Banana Republic…

And, finally, we couldn’t leave without picking up a few – err, more than a few – items for the little guy.

Since he’s slowly growing into 9 month clothing, we realized we actually don’t have that many outfits for him in that size, so we stocked up. And we bought baby sunglasses and flip flops. Cannot wait to put both of those on him. Seriously, adorable.

By the time we picked up Mr. Lucas and came back home, I was in need of a little snack. Lucky for me, we still have some apple bread in the house that I could snag quickly.

Ohhh, yes. This apple bread. The recipe for this delicious, quick bread is actually one I’ve had since the seventh grade. There was a brunch menu that we were in charge of putting together in my home economics class, and this recipe was one of ‘em (along with my overnight French toast and egg strata).

Yup. Seventeen(ish?) years later and I’m still making those scrumptious goodies.

But anyways…this apple bread? So awesome. And just check out that cinnamon sugar crust. Mmm mmmm…that’s what I’m talkin’ about.

The other cool thing about this recipe is that it yields two loaves, but can easily be halved so you have just one. However, I’d highly recommend making the two loaves and freezing the second. It freezes really well (I wrap in foil then put in a gallon bag) and it’s always such a treat when you find it in the freezer a couple days/weeks/months down the road.

This has long been a favorite of mine and, hopefully, it’ll become one of yours too!

Old Fashioned Apple Bread

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 50-55 minutes
  • Yield: 2 loaves

  • 2 cups peeled, cored, and chopped apples
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsps baking soda
  • 2 tsps baking powder
  • Cinnamon Sugar topping (optional) – 2 tbsp sugar + 2 tsp cinnamon

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. With electric mixer, cream butter, sugar, and applesauce together.
  3. Add eggs and milk to creamed mixture.
  4. Measure dry ingredients (flours, cinnamon, salt, baking powder and soda) and sift into creamed mixture.
  5. Add apples then stir and mix thoroughly.
  6. Pour batter into two 9×5” loaf pans sprayed with cooking spray.
  7. If desired, sprinkle with Cinnamon Sugar topping.
  8. Bake for 50-55 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Enjoy!

WOW! Y’all definitely made it out good. I know Lucas is super excited about all of his new goodies as well. That bread looks so great. I have plans to make lots of bread this weekend but I’m having a hard time deciding between this apple bread, or your banana bread!

Definitely looks like a successful shopping trip to me! I’m in need of one of those soon. And I’ll have to try the apple bread sometime! Usually I’m all about the banana bread, but that looks like a fun change.

This bread looks SO yummy! Too cool that it’s from 7th grade!

I also went shopping yesterday! It had been way too long – last summer! Anyway, I felt the exact same way about a pair of shorts I didn’t buy. They were so cute!

I LOVE outlets! I live in Orlando and we have three outlets within 20 minutes of our house. I’m always so tempted to buy stuff online (especially with those killer Express emails that seem to come out every single day) but try to do most of my shopping at the outlets because I save so much! Those outfits for Lucas are so adorable. Baby clothes are so freakin’ cute!

I am so making this apple bread. It looks so moist with the perfect crispy top. DELISH!
That outfit is really cute on you. Can you order it online?
Mmm….breakfast is my favorite meal out too. If you have any free time on the weekends, make crestless quiche cups in muffin tins that you can keep in the fridge and eat for breakfasts all week. It makes mornings super easy and you can just grab a piece of toast or English muffin to go with them once you get to work. Plus, they are easily customizable so you can add veggies or just cheese.

17 Courtney April 3, 2014 at 1:36 pm

I don’t think I can since it was from the outlet…ahhhh well ;)

18 Sara @ LovingOnTheRun April 3, 2014 at 8:51 am

Wow what awesome finds you had! I always struggle with finding good clothes at outlets but I really have to be in the mood to go shopping at outlets or I end up getting frustrated and leaving. So glad you all had such a fun day!

Love your outfits! Shopping for Spring and Fall clothes is always so much fun. Outlets are the best for the shopping sprees! Cannot wait to see Lucas in his new Spring outfits, sunglasses on babies are the cutest! Also-what an amazing treat to have a day off work and a full day of Mommy and Daddy time-so important for couples to still do that-good for you!

20 Courtney April 3, 2014 at 1:36 pm

Thanks! It was definitely nice to be able to just play the “husband and wife” role without being mommy and daddy for a few hours. But then I was more than ready to go pick the little man up when we were done :)

I think I used about 5 medium sized apples – definitely give it a try!!

Nice finds!!! You should so nip back to get the outfit you didn’t get! Love the shoes you wearing yesterday too! :0

That apple bread looks soo yummy! Not sure if someone has asked already but what type of apples would you recommend using?

36 Courtney April 3, 2014 at 1:31 pm

I used Macintosh, which are usually my favorite! Granny Smith work well too :)

37 Renee Benda April 3, 2014 at 12:58 pm

Gap is always great for outlet finds, I usually make out really well there. And at The Loft as well. Cute outfit! Maybe spring will actually stick around for us Upstaters! Fingers crossed.

I love outlet shopping spree’s! The first (and only time) I’ve ever been outlet shopping was just this past November, we drove from Canada to Buffalo NY and did some damage :)

Now there’s a Nordstrom Rack close by to me, and I think that may be my prime spot to shop.

39 karleen April 3, 2014 at 6:03 pm

that’s awesome about the successful shopping spree! BTW you look amazing! Doesn’t even look like you had a baby last year! omg I hope I spring back quick when the time comes. Also awesome that the hubby came along shopping with you. too cute! and time off well deserved i’m sure. sounds like a great day:)

40 Celeste April 3, 2014 at 7:58 pm

41 Torry @ Working on a Dream April 3, 2014 at 8:52 pm

I LOVE the outlet malls – I need to get the ones by me. It needs to get a little warmer here in Chicago so we can bust out the spring clothes :-)

42 Laura April 4, 2014 at 3:37 pm

Hi, just wondering what temperature you bake the bread at? Thanks!

43 Courtney April 4, 2014 at 5:28 pm

Oh shoot!! I can’t believe I forgot to include that, haha…it’s 350!

44 Caitlyn April 7, 2014 at 10:24 pm
