This is a post that’s been at the back of my mind for quite some time now, and I feel like I’m ready to take a stab at trying to put some of these thoughts together. You’ll have to forgive me if things wind up all over the place, but it’s just how my brain works most days.
So the big question that I’ve continued to ask myself…am I really a healthy living blogger? And have I ever really been?
Some days I’ll think yes, sure, of course I am. That’s what I started out as just over 5 years ago, so it must be what I am now…right? Then other days I’ll think, well, the person I am today is so incredibly different from the person I was 5 years ago…so maybe I wasn’t then, but I am now?
For those of you who haven’t been reading since the beginning (which I’m sure many of you have not – and if you have, I really cannot thank you enough), let me give you a little recap. I started the blog in April 2010 after having spent about a year silently reading other blogs. I began by emulating what many of them did, by blogging 3x a day, documenting all of my meals (usually a breakfast post, lunch post, and dinner post) along with my workouts. I used the blog as an excuse to choose salads over French fries and berries over ice cream, just so that I’d be able to portray the “healthier” choices.
Looking back, blogging that way was a LOT of work. And I’d be lying if I said that there weren’t times where I was hesitant to go out and actually do something for fear of missing a blog post. But the more I worked at it, the more I continued to see my blog grow, and it was something I just couldn’t pull myself away from. I was hooked.
I know I’ve mentioned this before, but when I look back and read some of my old blog posts, I cringe at what I see. The restrictive meals, the excessive workouts, the “safe” foods, and the need to justify any sort of indulgence. Random little memory…I can even recall one evening, after receiving a comment that was calling me out for always having to justify “bad” foods and larger portions, and saying things about needing my “fat pants.” I asked Jay about it and he said, well actually yeah, you do say that stuff a lot. And I think that really stuck with me and got the wheels turning. What was I doing??
Here I was calling myself a healthy living blogger – which sure, I did have some healthy habits – but was what I was advocating for really healthy? I’m sure some would argue yes, but I’m more inclined to say not really.
Sure, there are some people who thrive on multiple workouts a day and have no problem restricting their food choices; and if that’s for them (or you) then it’s not my business to say otherwise. But eventually I came to realize that that’s not what worked for me, and after some soul searching and the push of some medical advice, my definition of healthy changed.
Fast-forward to today, 5 years, multiple career changes, and 1 child later, and I consider myself to be in such a better place. It’s kind of crazy to see just how much has changed since the beginning of STSL, but I can tell you that I don’t regret any of it. I did a lot of growing up on this blog. And I still adore blogging the way I used to before, but it’s certainly not the unhealthy addiction it once used to be, and its content has changed significantly. I know that because of this, I’ve both lost and gained readers, and that’s 100% okay (and expected!).
And this, again, is where I began to question whether this is a “healthy living blog” or not. I thought, okay, can I fall under this category if I’m not sharing pinnable workouts every week? Or choosing the French fries over the salad? Or creating recipes that aren’t paleo/gluten-free/vegan/whatever specialty diet, but rather, creating and sharing recipes with real butter and sugar? And, on top of that, what if I’m polishing off said batches of recipes over the course of a few days (which yes, Jay and I did demolish an entire batch of cookie bars in 4 days)? And drinking alcohol a few times a week. Is that “healthy living?”
Because many of the other blogs that I read DO make super “healthy” recipes and are working out all the time (and I think many of them do a great job at it, which is why I enjoy reading), I struggled with this for a while, thinking that I needed to do all of these things too. It seemed as if this was the “norm” for living, so I assumed that’s what the picture of health looked like.
But as I’ve become less immersed in the blog world and have focused more on life outside of blogging and doing what feels best for me, I’ve slowly begun to realize that this isn’t necessarily the norm for everyone. And it’s okay if you fall in that category or you don’t. As long as you’re living YOUR healthy life.
Okay, well, I’m getting to the point where I feel like I could keep going in multiple directions with this post. So to keep from losing you all to my ramblings and not making much sense or getting totally off track, it’s probably best if I try to wrap this all up.
I guess the purpose of this post today is to say that at the end of the day, I am still going to call myself a healthy living blogger…and that’s because it’s my healthy living. I’m not saying that what I do is what you should do, and I’m not saying I always make the healthiest choices. But I think that in and of itself is healthy…and ok, I am already getting sick of the word healthy. Sheesh.
So for me, I can tell you that calling this a healthy living blog means:
Not overthinking things.
More about feeling good than looking good – but I won’t try to lie and say that looks mean nothing to me. I’m human. But I have touched a bit on this subject before.
Not being perfect.
Trying to live each day as a great mom to an amazing little boy, knowing he’s watching my every move.
Working out when I can – whether it’s 5x a week or 1x a week – because I want to, not because I feel like I have to.
Trying my best to eat fresh, colorful, healthy produce every day, but accepting the fact that it doesn’t always happen.
Being okay with the fact that while I may enjoy eating healthy foods and meals, I enjoy eating sweets and desserts even more.
Accepting the fact that if I go to bed after 11pm because I was up spending time with Jay, that I’m going to skip a morning workout and that’s okay.
Acknowledging when I’ve gone a bit crazy on the sweets/alcohol/etc. and taking a step back…without having to make a big ordeal about it. Identify the issue, work on correcting it, and move on.
Making no foods off limits, but practicing moderation with everything (including moderation itself).
Being okay with the fact that I buy and eat some processed foods, even though I know they’re likely full of stuff I really don’t need.
Reminding myself that just because somebody else is eating “x” or exercising “x” days a week, it doesn’t mean that I have to.
And while we’re at it…it’s also reminding myself to just stop comparing myself to others. Period. In all facets of life. We’re all different and fabulous in our own way and we’ve all got so much to be grateful for.
So there’s healthy living, for me, and there’s where the blog stands. And for those of you who chose to continue to stick around and come back to read with me, regardless of my blog having a “healthy living” status or not, I can’t thank you enough. You’re all amazing.
And now, after typing it 2,592 times, I think I’m okay with avoiding the phrase healthy living for a while.
Thanks for sticking around with me today. <3

Great post, Courtney! I am a long-time reader and feel that my life has progressed much like yours. To me, healthy living is happy living. Filing my life with things that make me feel good, are positive and add to my life is my focus. Blogging is such a great way to look back and see all that we have learned and how we have changed and grown. Love your blog because you are you.
Erin M. says
:) I’ve been following since the beginning and love the direction the blog has taken over the years.

I agree Erin!

I do too! I love that you are real and share the when you decide to indulge! I read some of the other blogs and feel like I am a failure if I have something that is not clean or organic! I like that you create a nice balance in your life between work and fun! I, too, live healthy but decide on some wine and treats here and there and I think that’s ok-finding your blog help me realize that it is about balance! Keep blogging your healthy lifestyle b/c you are one of the 2-3 that I continuously revisit!

Courtney, I loved this post so much and can relate in so many ways! I have been reading your blog for years and years and it was one that encouraged me to start my own blog, I have always appreciated your honesty and you are a breath of fresh air! I too fell into the blogging trap of feeling like I need to post a certain number of times or I need to be perceived in a certain way. Now I blog when I want to and not because I have to and it really is freeing! I too don’t know if my blog is Healthy a living anymore, but it does still represent my version of a healthy life! Please know that even if I am not a regular commenter, I am still a regular reader and I enjoy your updates! :)
Katie says
Thank you for this post – you hit on so many aspects of life that we all struggle with so much, regardless of blogging. It is so nice to see a real person, who has everyday struggles and obstacles, behind a “healthy living blog”. Keep doing what you’re doing <3
Tonia says
Well said Courtney. Your blog is refreshing, sincere, and in my eyes healthy. Be true to yourself and you will be healthy!!!!
Linz @ Itz Linz says
Yes yes and yes! I can relate to a lot of what you wrote! To me, healthy living is all about BALANCE!
Gena says
Such a great post. Thanks for sharing so honestly. I love that you know what works for you and I think showing the healthy living looks different for everyone is so important.
Andrea @ pencils and pancakes says
Great post. Not to sound creepy but yours is probably the blog I look forward to reading the most because you’re so real. I don’t need to read other people’s workouts or everything they ate because I feel fine doing my own thing in those areas, when I first started blogging I fell into the same comparison trap. Whatever your blog is, I love it so you’re doing something right.
Hayley@HealthyRegardsHayley says
Courtney! I have been reading your blog for quite some time now and I actually appreciate how it has evolved as you have grown! Happy = healthy and healthy = happy. You seem pretty darn happy these days (:
Lindsey says
I’ve been with you since the beginning and will continue to read your blog for as long as it’s up and you’re posting! You’re truly an amazing woman and I admire you for pouring your heart out to us this morning. It was so inspirational. We all love you Courtney!
Annie says
Fabulous post. I started reading a lot of healthy living blogs a few years ago but yours has remained one of my favorites. I was/am recovering from disordered eating and remember thinking at the time: is this what recovery looks like? Does it mean that I have to workout all the time and restrict my eating/watch everything that I put in my mouth if I want my weight to be stable? I’m so glad a few bloggers have now come to their senses and admitted they weren’t “really” healthy because even if it’s not done on purpose, blogs are models to other people and they encourage similar behaviors, positive or not.
I am still looking for my definition of healthy but i’ve sure come a long way since the deep dark days of my ED and you’ve certainly helped and for that I am grateful!
Britt@MyOwnBalance says
I 100% agree! I don’t think there is one definition of healthy and I think you can be a healthy living blogger and still eat cookies. Healthy living is a journey and not just one way of living.
Emily says
What a great post Courtney! This is the kind of stuff you don’t hear people talking about and it’s so refreshing! (as are most of your posts so keep it up!) I love the balance you’ve created with your life and it’s inspiring so I’m going to keep reading no matter what kind of blog you call yourself! and I’m going to use an exclamation point for every time you said healthy ;)

Heather @Fit n Cookies says
I’ve been reading your blog since close to the beginning, and I think the healthy Courtney is more now than before. I had similar thoughts before I got pregnant, and that I needed to work out 1 hour every day and if I didn’t, gosh I’d gain 10 lbs! I’ve had a total mind overlook now that I’ve been pregnant and what exactly healthy is. I agree healthy is more enjoying things in moderation and not constant worrying about food choices. I also can always count on your baked goods to taste delicious because they are made with the good ingredients – butter, sugar, flour ;)
Jess says
It is so refreshing to see this post. I don’t think there is a unique definition of healthy, as we should strive to be happy. I’ve been reading your blog for a few years and I’ve always loved your honesty. As long as you are enjoying life that is what matters. I come from a restrictive eating and excesive workouts as well and I understand everything… Cheers to being happy, and when you are happy you are healthy
amy says
Hi Courtney- I have never posted before, and found you maybe a yearish ago through pbfingers.com but just wanted to say that I love your blog because you are so REAL and I love that we share that same sweet tooth. I’m pretty healthy too (exercise not only for physical but more mental), but love chocolate. Your dessert recipes with real sugar and some processed stuff (just made your cheesecake jello cookies) are refreshing! Keep being you!
cara zimmer says
I’m with her! I also consider myself a healthy living person, however I will ALWAYS love my captian morgan and diet coke, haha!!
Morgan says
You are the REAL life version of healthy Courtney! And your honesty is always portrayed and that is what is motivating. Life ebbs and flows, our definition of healthy should too. You rock lady :)
kaitlin @4loveofcarrots says
this is such a great post and so very true! Healthy living is definitely your own definition, no one else should tell you what healthy living means to you, you define it!
Caitlin says
I’ve been reading your blog for about 4 years now and I can honestly say in the last year you have become my favorite blog to read. There’s something about your posts that are always so real and genuine feeling, and the past year or so writing about the “real” (family, jobs, food etc. ) without the constant focus on working out / beyond healthy field recipes. I truly enjoy your blog and your “voice” these days so thank you for continuing to share and for being true to you! :)
Ashley says
I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of years now but haven’t ever commented and it’s definitely one of my favorites (if not my all-time favorite) I definitely consider yours a healthy living blog and love how you’re so real. I too sometimes get the fries rather than the salad and have alcohol a few times a week so it’s nice to have someone to relate too! Oh and I also live in upstate NY!
amy says
To be honest Courtney, I think your blog is TOTALLY under the Healthy Living Category. I read a few blogs that are out there…, the consistant workous, no real rest days, no days of indulging in cookies, cakes, and other treats…..to me living like that isn’t healthy…. I think not only are you giving your body what it wants your also LIVING! Your blog is actually one of my favorites. Life is about balance…and that’s exactly what I feel you do….. keep doing what your doing!!!
Jenn@Mark My Miles! says
YES! (that is all) : )

Great post. Very real and relatable! I’ve been reading this blog for awhile now and it has definitely grown to be one of my favorites. It’s absolutely one I look forward to reading every day! Thanks for writing and sharing :)

This blog post is the reason I choose to read your blog. This blog is real – real life – no gimmicks. Thank you for being you and allowing us to read about work outs and delicious Chili and Cookie recipes in the same week ! Keep doing you and living your version of healthy!
Marielle says
This is why I love your blog! I’ve been reading for about 2 yrs and love how real you are and relatable! It’s funny, I was nervous to start a blog originally bc j wasn’t “super healthy all the time” but I figured what the heck and did it anyways! :)
Bri says
If this isn’t healthy living then I don’t know what is! You are my FAVORITE blogger, regardless what category you fall under. The thing I admire the most is how real you are. A few years ago I was in a bad place because of all these blogs (not their fault, just my interpretation of them). I kept thinking that I needed to be perfect, just like them, eat all the vegetables and work out everyday. But then I realized that that is not the norm, I am just seeing “everybody” doing it because I have chosen to read five or ten blogs of women who live that way.
I digress. I just wanted to let you know the impact you have had on this reader :) (as cheesy as that sounds it is true!)
Grace @ Diary of a Running Snail says
Courtney – thank you for this post! I have been waiting a long time to read something like this. It was everything I needed to hear and you really hit the nail on the head! Thank you for always being so real and always sharing that with us:)
Nicole W says
Awesome post and so so true. I am a long time reader, and love how real you are. Your blog is always the first one I read for the day! :) I got a little nervous there thinking you were going to announce at the end that you weren’t blogging anymore!! Definitely keep on your own path!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I think it comes down to the fact that you’e GROWN over the last 5 years and as YOU have, so has your blog. You’ve grown into a healthier, happier version of yourself and my hopes for myself and all of the other “healthy living bloggers” out there, is that we do the same thing. Quite honestly, I think that I have as well. My “healthy living” looks a bit different from yours but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s what works for me and makes ME feel MY best. Go us! :)
Kaelin says
I love your blog Courtney! You have been one step ahead of my on this crazy roller coaster of restriction, obsession, and unhealthy habits. Your blog and several others helped give me perspective on what a BALANCED life can look like. Much more appealing than the fear-driven “healthy lifestyle” I was scrambling for so long to obtain. If I could just workout more, just eat less, I would have it all!
Haha – life is so much more than that, right? I like how you put it as growing up. Yes, we have grown up together through this journey.
Thanks for sharing! Your actions help more than you know :)

Simply awesome. Well said.

It doesn’t matter what type of blog STSL is because I still love reading your posts! Honestly, like many of the other comments on here, I think you’re being real, which is awesome. You’re relatable! Keep up the good work!

Courtney, I LOVE all your posts. I have to say that I look up to you and I am always pushing myself to be a better person and live life to its fullest. You are just so real and incredible and you are just so awesome. We are all humans and need to do what is best for ourselves. I will and ALWAYS read our emails first thing. What can I say…I adore you!!!! You are a great woman!!! Thank you for letting us into your life…take care dear. xoxo

I think this is why I enjoy reading your blog the most!! I have kind of stopped checking in on other blogs but never miss one of your posts! They are relevant to mainstream people’s lives, trying to find a healthy balance in life, family and relationships so your ideas and recipes are fun and helpful! You have a great heart, family and life – keep doing what you are doing!
Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries says
Amen, sister!
Kate says
Courtney, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a ‘healthier’ post. Good for you! Your version of healthy is why I like your blog so much. Keep it up and keep enjoying yourself! I’ll certainly keep reading every day!
Rose says
Hey Courtney, I agree with most people here you Are healthy and I love reading your blog. I will say I’ve been reading since pretty much the start, along with a few other ‘hlb’ blogs. The weird thing is, the ones who haven’t changed, and are still doing the heavy exercise, no rest, vegetables and Tupperware and no ‘normal’ food, etc thing.. it really seems odd and strikingly unhealthy to me now. I think it is only natural to grow out of that and move on to the bigger picture in life. Kinda sad when people can’t. I love reading about meals that can be shared with husbands and babies (because mine will not accept just veggies for dinner either ;) ), enjoying meals cooked by family without hesitation and working out when you can which is not every day, and sometimes choosing life and love over a daily workout. Long comment, all to say, love your blog these days and you’re as healthy living as they come ;)
Ashley @ Sweet Carolina Belle says
This was a great post Courtney. I have been reading your blog since the beginning and have found myself evolving in the same way in my views toward healthy eating and exercise. Sometimes it is hard to compare yourself to how everything was different 5 years ago. However, I know things have changed for the better. I have loved following your journey and as I am expecting my first child I look forward to learning from you!

I think this outlook is SO healthy :) I love reading your blog, Courtney!!! :)

Hi Courtney,
Great post! I have been reading since the beginning, you were my first blog that I started reading and I read every single day. I look forward to your posts, pictures, life updates, Lucas updates…paint colors….everything.
I am actually starting a blog, it’s just taking me a while to figure things out before I launch it and you inspired me. I feel like okay do I need to do a healthy living blog or can I just do a cooking blog with a little bit of this and that.
Thank you so much. I can’t wait til your next post :)
Corey Duysen says
I love this! I think that’s why I have been a long time reader – the move you’ve made towards balance. Working out in the morning but enjoying a glass of wine at night. That’s what it should be about!
Sarah says
I love this post and think that you are definitely a healthy living blogger. Like you said, just because it is not someone elses definition of what they consider healthy does not mean you live some unhealthy, over-indulgence lifestyle. I admire you for being so open on this blog. We love reading your blog because you are relatable, you are real, we feel like we can connect with you through your writings. I view your blog as healthy living because it’s a balanced lifestyle and you’re happy. I read this article on elitdaily yesterday and absolutely loved it. I think you may find it interesting as well.

I love this post and I love how you’ve grown. I’m also a long time reader who never comments…I feel that you have truly found your identity (not that you didn’t before) but you are just so real and I feel that a lot of women can relate to your same lifestyle. I also feel true happiness is about balance. Fueling your body with good foods and splurging, too. Seriously, I used to blog about healthy living but I just couldn’t commit and I knew I wasn’t being true to myself-and now I’m in my 30’s and I can care less about the latest workout and what someone ate for every meal. I applaud myself for just getting to the gym these days. Oh how much things have changed since my 20s! Keepin’ up with the Jones’ is old news, do YOU! (and we all love it!)
Danielle says
I don’t think you really need to stress about labeling your blog as healthy living or not… I’ve been reading for years, probably 4-5, and I have to say that in the beginning your blog wasn’t that different from others, but over the last 2 years it’s taken a turn for the better and is now one of my favorite blogs! I love the combo of family life/recipes/exercise/fashion/etc. as well as how real you seem! Keep up the great work!
Jamie says
I’m obsessed with this post. I think it’s so easy to get caught in the comparison trap and having the blog world affect your real world life choices. The balance is hard, and I think I’ve struggled initially finding it. I’ve only been blogging for 5 months and it’s difficult at times. I’ve had thoughts that “everyone is going to say that I am being lazy if I don’t run today” and who cares if they do!? I really appreciate your honesty with this post :) Hope you have a fabulous Wednesday!
Shawna says
been a fan of yours for years, and i love this post so much. the concept of living your own healthy life — whatever that means to you, howsoever you feel like the best, happiest, most balanced version of yourself — is really what we all strive for, isn’t it? or what we should be, at least. i think it’s your personality and love for your life and people in it that shine through as the heart of your blog, and that’s what makes your little corner of the world so special.
Kristi says
I love your blog because it is real. All of our lives need a balance, and that is what your blog reflects. I have just recently found your blog but look forward to it every day. Keep up the work of being healthy & real with what “healthy” actually means.

Love this post and your blog. Keep doing what you do! My favorite blogs at the moment are lifestyle blogs- I love to hear about a mix of topics- including but not limited to food. I love day-to-day posts and other ramblings, so keep it up!
Kayla says
Court, I’ve been reading for what feels like only a few years now, but I’m sure it’s more like the 5 you’ve been blogging…and I have to say, I come back (or rather stay put) because you are a REAL PERSON, not some healthy living, workout-addicted, calorie-restricted clone. There are too many of those on the Internet. There are not enough REAL PEOPLE.
It’s something I struggle with too, as a so-called healthy living blogger, wife, mother of twins, runner, sorta-yogi, etc. — to resist this perceived NEED to portray only the best of my life on social media. If you look at Instagram, you’d think I wanted to go on EVERY run, you’d think my daughters ALWAYS play creatively and independently, and never fight, you’d think EVERY meal was clean and delicious…
All of that to say — I don’t think you had to write this post for any of us, but more for yourself. And I am proud of you for being completely and totally accepting of the fact that you are just going to be you, and that’s that. You, your husband, and your son have a wonderful example of a strong, healthy woman in their lives. Own that, girl.
clare @ fitting it all in says
LOVE. And totally agree about my blog. I think this IS WHAT A HEALTHY LIVING BLOG SHOULD BE! The others are more….”fitness-focus” or “perfection” blogs…hard to attain and not reasonable or realistic for lots of people. THIS is realistic, balanced, and real :) <3 you
Lisa says
Your blog is the only one that I still subscribe to since it is real, honest and heart felt. Plus, I enjoy hearing about your family and all the fun stuff going on in your life! :) Keep up the great work and don’t change a thing!
LiSa says
No matter how you define it, I love your blog now even more than before. I agree that healthy living is all of what you listed.
Ellen @ My Uncommon Everyday says
I love your blog, no matter what you call it! I remember when I started reading your blog (and others), I kind of wondered if I should be more concerned about “healthy” than I was. As you (and some others) transitioned a little, I realized that the answer was no, not necessarily. Veggies and exercise are great. Desserts and burgers and Netflix are great. Being able to live your life and love it is the best, and that’s what’s really healthy. I think you’re a fabulous example of that!
Melissa @ Freeing Imperfections says
I think the “healthy living” community that reads your blog (me included) are going to seriously appreciate this. I know I do! I think healthy living is such a crappy way to describe blogs. Everyone’s version of healthy is different. My blog slowly morphed into a workouts, healthy recipes kind of blog and now that I’m a stay at home mom and one kid later… yeah, not so much. But blogs are what they are.
I was actually just in the middle of writing about how my blog has changed too, mostly shifting from healthy living to a mom blog. It’s okay for blogs to shift and not “fit the mold” that they are under.
Always loved your blog no matter what it’s “called.” :)
Ashley @ A Lady Goes West says
Hi Courtney! I actually really prefer to follow other bloggers who have more realistic lifestyles, which you do. Thanks for talking about this — but I didn’t for an instant not consider you “healthy living” — because like you said, you’re balanced and real with us. Thank you for sharing your life! :)
Catherine Cormier says
Hi Courtney – the whole reason I continue to follow you is because you have a realistic approach to living life. You’re balanced and don’t apologize for any choices you make. After a few years of restricting certain foods and feeling guilty if I missed a workout, this is how I’m choosing to live my life too. I find that I’m able to relate to your blog a lot and I have stopped following certain blogs that led to me feeling like their lifestyle was unrealistic and potentially harmful.
As long as you keep writing … I’ll keep following :)

I think becoming a parent has a lot to do with this. I can’t focus all my energy into “healthy living” because I have real living to do with people who depend on me outside of the blog world. Am I jealous when I see people getting in killer workouts and great food and making it all work, while I’m barely getting my kids dressed for school before I rush out to work and struggle to try to fit it all in and maintain a truthful handle on HLblogging. YES! I think we all make choices and what’s great about these blogs (ALL of ours) is that we give real world examples of ways to actually do it all. I worry more when I see a blogger who makes no mention that it’s difficult, and doesn’t seem to have ANY blog/life balance. I like seeing people eat real food, have a happy marriage and occasional photos of their children, I think it shows balance and that balance is sometimes lost on people who are blogging healthy to blog healthy. My husband will be the first to say NO WAY when blogging/workouts get out of control and it makes me worry when some folks don’t seem to have that balancing person in their lives. I think you have a healthy perspective on what real healthy living looks like. Life gets messy… I wish more folks in our community would admit it.
Jacquelyn says
Courtney.. I’ve been reading your blog for over 4 years now…the way y are with us is amazing.. You have helped me become a “healthier” mr by sharing your life and all of your experiences. Amen to this! I love your blog even more in recent years because it shows REAL living, but mostly importantly, HAPPY living. Life is too short to worry about being perfect.

I started reading “Healthy Living Blogs” years ago and to be honest yours is the only one I’ve stuck with. Yes times a million to this post! I can SO relate to all of your thoughts here. Everyone’s “healthy” is different, and we all just to have to do what works for US. I think that’s the tricky thing about blogging … it’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling like you need to live and be just like “so and so” to be healthy and live happy. Thank goodness I learned otherwise! Thanks for keeping it real. Love you for that!
Renee @ Fit For Motherhood says
Oh Courtney, this was amazing and well said. I myself am struggling with finding a balance between “healthy living” and “really living”. I’m still working on it and you are such an inspiration. Thank you for sharing all your struggles and successes. You are an amazing person. :)
Katie says
Bravo!! I LOVE this post. I don’t have a healthy living blog, but so agree with everything you expressed here. I had to stop following some healthy living blogs because I found myself caught in the comparison trap (of an edited life, mind you) and found their approach to healthy living unrelatable (to me!). Now that I have a sweet little girl, I think so much about how my attitudes toward healthy living will affect her. I try so hard not to put down my own body in front of her (really, I should never do this) or talk about “good”/”bad” foods, etc. I for sure screw up a lot, but actively thinking about it has been so eye opening to some of the things I say and do!
Anyway, in conclusion – I find your blog to be a wonderful representation of a balanced and healthy life. I relate to you a lot as a working mom who is just attempting to balance everything the best she can. Keep it up, lady!
Natalie j says
You balance everything so well. It is refreshing to read your blog. Healthy living is exactly that: balance. Whether it’s time with family, work, cocktails with friends, stories of motherhood, fashion, date nights with hubby, or glimpses into your workouts and meals… You do life well and it’s so enjoyable to read a relatable blog. Thanks Courtney!
Anna L. says
Courtney – I’ve been reading your blog for almost 4 years now, and I’ve always been able to relate to it. Four years ago I too restricted meals, obsessed over workouts, had “fat pants”, etc. Then, similar to what you went through, my idea of healthy changed as well. I had to gain about 10 pounds, which at the time was one of the hardest things I could’ve let myself do. Reading your blog and seeing that there are others out there who have gone through similar experiences really comforted me. Now, I really appreciate how honest and relatable your blog is, and reading about you and your family’s lives. That’s one thing that has always kept me coming back to STSL, the pure relatability of your experiences! “Healthy living” is unique to each individual, so keep living your healthy life!
Melissa says
Thanks for posting this today Courtney. Everyone has their own views on healthy living. I think you’re taking a great approach to things. I have struggled with my weight for years and I find when I restrict things or say no to things I can’t stick with it. I end up losing weight but then burn out on what foods i’m eating and then I gain it all back. I’ve recently committed to workouts 4-5 times a week and cleaning up my diet. No more obsessing about the little details. I want to enjoy my life as well.
Heather @ Life In Leggings says
I love this! And I totally agree with you. I often feel the same way about my blog… is it really healthy living when I post about going out, drinking wine, and eating all the desserts? Absolutely. “Healthy” living includes indulgences, and it’s all about finding a balance to include them in your regular eating schedule and to avoid binging. I love your honestly and truly enjoy following your blog. Thanks for putting it all out there! :)
Amy says
Well said, Courtney! I cannot praise you enough for this awesome post! What a great perspective you have on life, health, relationships…the whole bit! Keep blogging! You are an excellent voice!
Marcie says
this is a great post – love how honest it is. I think what’s kept everyone reading your blog over the years is just that. Anyone that reads your blog can relate to you in one way or another – as a mother, a wife, a career woman, etc.
Stacey M. says
I haven’t commented in a while, but I haven’t stopped reading. I’ve loved your blog since I discovered it over 2 years ago and I will continue to read until you stop posting (which I hope is far, far in the future!). I love this post, and I love you for being such an honest individual. You’re the type of girl I could definitely be friends with in real life, and THAT’S the reason I keep reading. <3
Ash Diamond says
Courtney I love this post so much and it is so true! Many of us are healthier versions of ourselves now that we’ve taken a chance to breathe, say no to what doesn’t make us happy and yes to those many things blog and non-blog related which do make us happy!
Chelsea @ Chelsea Eats Treats says
I love this! Thanks so much for your honesty and for taking the time to put yourself out there. I’ve been reading since 2011 (so, not the beginning, but close) and I think you seem like a much more “healthy” person today than you were back then. Maybe that’s because I’m similar to you and I think being healthy includes drinking the beer and eating the chocolate and LOVING YOURSELF in addition to eating fresh produce and working out. Keep at it, girlfriend! You’re doing awesome!
Allison says
Hi! I’ve been reading your blog for two years now and I have enjoyed your recaps of a very balanced and realistic healthy life. I also really like how you have followed the ups and downs of achieving this balance and moderation, as I think many readers can relate. I’ve enjoyed reading the blog because of your version of healthy that fits with your life, and also because although I’m not in a similar life situation (I don’t have kids yet), I am always intimated when I think about how it would be so challenging to try to raise a child and exercise all the time and work and eat a certain way. Thanks for making that seem like less of a challenge and more of a balance–I find it really inspirational! Also, I love that it never seems contrived, it just seems like it comes naturally to you. Thanks for a great post and a fun blog to follow!
Jennifer says
This post is amazing! I have been a reader for a few years now and I like how real you are about everything. I have gone down the route of being too obsessive with diet/exercise and that is not a fun way to live life. I have learned it is all about moderation but that is hard to really instill in yourself when you’ve been so far down the restrictive path. But I am learning every day. I also have a son and he’s only 6 months old but he does watch what his Mama does and I want him to see someone strong and healthy. That’s my motivation. Thank you for keeping it real and showing what healthy living really is! Thanks for being an inspiration for me!
Kari says
What an awesome post! I love your blog (and you) just the way it is!
Katie @ Live Half Full says
This post is spot on! I think about this question often with my own blog, but ultimately I have decided that I’m sharing my life, my real life, for me and that’s all that matters. I think the change you’ve gone through means that you have found a balance and that’s the most important part of “healthy living” in my opinion!
Kate says
I really love this post, and your blog! Sometimes the blogs which constantly post vegan/paleo/gluten-free/sugar-free (you get the idea) recipes and eats make me feel really bad about my own diet. Because while it is healthy a majority of the time, I definitely indulge every now and then. After struggling with eating and feeling like I have to make the right choices or exercise off every damn calories I have come to feel that being healthy is not feeling guilty for eating, living and loving my life. I feel like your blog reflects that which is why I enjoy reading it, keep blogging :D
Savana says
this is so true! I love how real you are. Everything in moderation is key! I used to and still do obsess over this topic way to much. Everyone has their different kind of “healthy”, whatever works best for you and your family is all that matters!
Heather M says
I can’t even begin to describe how much I love this post!
The healthy living blog world needs more role models like yourself because true healthy living includes mental health, sustainability and balance. I would love to hear more from your perspective about letting go of that need for control and perfection. This is something I have struggled with for many, many years. Unfortunately so many healthy living blogs fuel the desire to be perfect and the feeling that if I am not perfect I am less worthy. It is true that living by such unrealistic standards you really can miss out on a whole lot of happiness!
Lilly says
Love this post!! I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and I’ve really enjoyed observing your transition of old “healthy” to how you are now, as I have gone through a very similar transition myself. I couldn’t agree and love your definition of healthy more. You are awesome, keep up the great work!!!
Renee says
I find your blog to be very refreshing! Besides the fact that reading it reminds me of back home in NY, I use your recipes all the time. I too have taken a step back from obsessing over everything I eat and working out. I now focus on spending time with family and making sure we have delicious, healthy (and not so healthy) foods to eat. I work out when I can, which is 1-3 times a week since my baby was born in April. The way my body looked used to be one of the most important things to me, but now I am proud to say I have grown up a little bit and my focus has shifted to family, family, family. It’s nice to see someone else making similar life changes as me.
Jessica says
So appreciate this post :) I want to be everything — healthy, fit, successful in my career, great mom, great wife, great friend…but there’s no way to do all that all the time. I believe in striving for the healthiest lifestyle, but not beating myself up about it. At the end of the day, the most important thing is a happy family and a good night’s rest!
Fiona MacDonald says
I think the reason I love your blog so much is because it isn’t always about fitness and healthy eating. You show how life can be a balance and you do an amazing job of balancing it all and never been shy to say when maybe the eating hasn’t been perfect or the workouts have slipped, but that’s what we as readers want. We want to see real, so you do you girl because your blog and you are awesome :)
Somer @PupsOnTheBrain says
Thank you for this post! I’m a new reader around here, but over on my blog I’ve kind of been struggling with the idea of labelling myself a “healthy living blogger.” Since the majority of blogs I read focus on healthy living (in some form or another) it appeals to me to be a part of that community, but I sometimes think to myself that because I’m not a size two, or don’t work out every day, or don’t always eat super healthy that I don’t “qualify.” However, I am passionate about improving myself and working hard to become a healthier and happier in all aspects of life! I’d like to think that’s what counts.
Plus, I think that reading 10 blogs that all ONLY recap meals and workouts is kind of boring. I’d rather read from bloggers who have a clear personality!
Michele says
You are one of the only health living bloggers (whatever that means) that I read that also has a full time job. This automatically makes you the most relatable, and to me, the most realistic. I struggle reading posts about balancing time between family, work, fun, and exercise when that person can make/eat all their meals at home if they wanted, and go to the gym during less crowded times, and so on and so forth. Your version of a healthy lifestyle is balanced, enjoyable and most importantly, REALISTIC. so I hope you don’t ever feel you have to question if what you portray is “healthy enough” because if it’s not, we all have to quit our jobs and go to the gym 3 hours a day!
Lindsay says
Amen to all of this!!
Anne says
I just want to say that I’ve been reading blogs for about a year and a half, and I’ve gone back and read lots of old stuff, and you are above and beyond my absolute favorite blogger because you speak your truth, and regardless of what category that may be, you are awesome!! I also can get too caught up in trying to be perfect, and reading your blog helps me to know that I’m not the only one and most importantly we each need to listen to ourselves and follow our own path. Stay the path, you are wonderful just as you are and you inspire me!! I relate so well to you because I’m a working New York mother with one son and a best friend husband. I also want to be fit and healthy and have a pretty house, etc. Why can’t we have it all? You’re doing it Courtney, you’re living the life you want to! Life is amazing and you remind me of that every day. Thank you!!
Sheena @ Paws and Pavement says
I love reading your blog because you are funny, entertaining and real. You eat healthy and workout but you also share real life and that takes over ….a lot! I tried starting my blog similar to how you did which is fine but it just doesn’t seem real all of the time. Thanks for sharing!
Lauren says
Hi there! “Long time” reader here, but never a commenter.. I have followed your blog for 3.5 years? And I found you through another HLB. I stopped following most of those blogs as I have changed too. I now have a daughter and used to critique myself for food choices after seeing these bloggers and how they eat and worked out. Now with a 9 month old.. I have never appreciated my body more. I also learned balance and you and I are the same page (at least you bake the cookies… I don’t make it past the dough!!) with lifestyle. Please keep doing what you are doing. I think it is the definition of healthy and I am SO on the same page. Thank you for taking the time to do this!!
Chelsea says
The success of yours and many other healthy bloggers has inspired me to finally start my own. I am just beginning and finding the time to learn is hard, but seeing inspirational blogs like yours gives me hope!
Josie says
I’ve been following your blog for about a year, and I’ve never really gone backwards looking at your posts before I started reading, so I don’t know anything about what it was like before. But your current blog is one my favorites.
As a full-time working mom and wife, I so appreciate your real life — I try to hard to balance a healthy lifestyle for myself and make healthy meals for my family. But let’s just be real – sometimes it’s easy to order a pizza and hey, there are veggies on it. There’s more to life than counting calories.
Thanks for being real and refreshing.
Lee says
I would absolutely say this is a healthy living blog. To me a healthy lifestyle is about balance and you seem to do that very well! I’ve been a reader for about 3 years and would not have stuck around if all you ever did was eat rabbit food.

Hello There!
I’m usually not one for commenting on blog posts (I don’t know why hahah), but I had to commend you on this beautiful post and for your bravery in redefining what healthy living is to YOU. I actually think your blog is one of the “healthiest” out there for so many reasons. Real health means listening to your body and feeding it foods that are good for your physical health, but also knowing that it’s wonderful to enjoy foods that feed your soul. I find what you share on this blog to be so BALANCED, which is a rarity in the health and wellness world (in my humble opinion). Keep doing what your doing, as you are an inspiration to so many women. You are demonstrating what it means to live a life of true health, which certainly does not include restriction and following exercise dogma. Thank you for your vulnerability and strength!
Lauren C. says
Great post! This is so relevant to where I’m at in life right now and defining healthy and happy on my terms. Keep doing what you’re doing, I love reading your blog!

I love your blog Courtney – your honesty and authenticity are so inspiring. It is refreshing and so healthy for me to read your perspective and the ‘letting go’ of rigid rules about food, weight and exercise. You live a healthy balanced life and your priorities are just where you need them to be for your best life right now. Learning to live what is our best as opposed to what others/society say is best – is a HUGE lesson and easier said than done. Thank you for being a beautiful example to us :)
By the way – not sure if you are famiiar with Robyn’s blog ‘real life rd’ but it is so in line with your approach that I thought you might enjoy checking it out.
Enjoy this beautiful summer weather :)

Courtney, I never ever comment on blogs, but your blog is my favorite. I think you are far and away the most healthy and relateable blogger going. Thanks for always being honest about what is going on in your life, I feel like it makes me feel like I am not the only one who misses a workout for a night out with girlfriends or orders pizza because why not? I don’t think other bloggers do such a good job at that…
Courtney says
Thanks so much for commenting, Kara! I really appreciate you reading and your kind words :)

Somehow I missed this post yesterday, but I’m so glad Ashley linked to it!
This is how I feel about my weird food/fitness/mom/etc blog. I’ve been reading STSL since just before you became pregnant, so I’ve only related to your new “healthy living” (though I’ve read back some). I LOVE that you drink when you want, skip a workout without feeling roof utility, and sometimes eat the damn processed food because, duh, being 100% healthy/organic/etc IS expensive and time-consuming when you have a family and job no matter how many folks tell you otherwise. Keep doing YOU, girl. Your readers appreciate it.

This is actually the first time I’ve read your blog, but I LOVE this post. Before I had kids I was working out 2 hours per day, running marathons, and even racing the Ironman. Now I have 3 kids, and just finished back to back pregnancies 6 months ago. I have a bunch of weight to use and I feel like a fitness/blogging failure when I go more than a day or two without a workout, or when one of the kids is sick and I just get a pizza delivered. I know I could be losing the weight faster, but I’m working and in college so my free time is limited, and some days I just want to cuddle my kids before they get too old to want mommy snuggles all the time…having balance and not beating yourself up is definitely healthy! :)
Courtney says
Thank you so much for stopping by, Dottie. My goodness, it sounds like you seriously have your hands full – keep rockin’ what you’re doing!! 3 kids, working, AND in college? You are an inspiration!! I think I’d be getting pizza deliveries quite frequently if I were in your shoes ;)

I love this post Courtney. I think it is so important for everyone to find their own balance and stop comparing themselves to the standards of others. Thank you so much for sharing your insights!

I think you are excactly what a healthy living blog should be…you’re balanced, you’re living life…
If I had a daughter your blog would be one I’d want her to read!

I think this is one of the greatest comments I could have received. Wow, THANK YOU Kelly!
Sarah @ Seriously Lovely says
This post pretty much defines what I consider healthy living to be–balanced living.
This is an idea I’ve struggled with as I’ve been starting my own blog. On the one hand I’d love to write about how to eat less refined sugar, because that’s something that helps me feel better on a day to day basis…on the other I want to be able to post my favorite refined-sugar-laden dessert recipes because I think it’s just as important to enjoy those sweet treats on occasion. To me this is what balanced and healthy living is all about, rather than a black and white extreme view of life.
I followed a link here from another blog and now I’m so glad I did–your blog sounds like just the type I like to follow!
Courtney says
Thank you SO much for stopping by, Sarah! It sounds like we’re pretty similar ;) Hopefully I’ll see you around some more!!

Love this post! I recently started following your blog, and it’s one that I look forward to every day. I think this is such a great, realistic outlook on life, “healthy” means something different to everyone and it’s more than just eating fruits and veggies. Thanks for sharing your insights :)
Jamie says
Courtney… I LOVE this post! Thank you for being so honest. I’ve been reading for quite a while, and I’m one who prefers your current style of blogging. And it’s crazy to remember you as being “restrictive” or “perfectly” healthy, because now I think of you as one of the realest “healthy living blogs” out there. It’s refreshing to see someone who can eat dessert and drink cocktails like me ;) Anyway, I think you’re a wonderful example… keep being real, keep being you. I think everyone appreciates it! <3 xox

I have been reading since the beginning. I enjoyed it then and I enjoy it just as much now- I guess my version of “healthy living” has changed too and it’s been great to have blogs that have grown and evolved over time. I think that’s life. I worry about blogs that haven’t changed because I look back at 5 years ago and I know I would be so unhappy if I still lived like that, and I am so thankful for the journey I have been on to get to where I am today (and will no doubt change further). Life isn’t static. And we aren’t meant to fit neatly into labels and categories. If it means anything, I have your blog in my “Friday” folder on Feedly because I catch up on Fridays with ya! :)

Just read this post & am loving it. I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of years & I always look forward to your posts – whether they are “healthy” or not. I love the concept of finding YOUR healthy. It’s something I am continuing to work on, but you summed it up so nicely. Thank you!

I know I’m a little late commenting on this post, but THANK YOU for this! It’s so refreshing & honest & balanced. With the overload of social media in today’s digital age, it’s so easy to get caught in the comparison trap. It’s refreshing to find a blog that is real and relateable. Thank you for reminding us of what the true definition of healthy should be!

I’m a newer reader, within the last year, and I adore your blog. I like that you are real and share how you balance a family, job and a healthy lifestyle. I think THAT is a healthy living blog and it’s so great to read about your days and know I’m not alone when I’m too tired to get up for a workout because I stayed up late visiting with my family :)

Such a great post and very true! If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that healthy isn’t a one-size-fits all. We’re all going to “healthy” in our own ways, but the most important thing is that healthy is a balance. Not extremes, one way or the other.
