This post is brought to you by a STSL sponsor, with an amazing giveaway at the end!
Looking back at 2015, it was a bit of an ‘up and down’ year for me, if you will, in terms of fitness. While the first few months of the year were fairly normal, we then started getting into quite a few changes that had an impact on when, where, and how I worked out.
We sold our house in April, which gave us about a month and a half to pack, prep, and move out. During this transition, a lot of my fitness equipment was either moved around or packed away, so I didn’t have access to all that I usually do.
When we moved out at the end of May and moved in with friends, my fitness routine changed quite a bit. I didn’t really have much room to do many of the DVD’s I had been doing, but I did have access to their basement gym, so I had fun switching it up using the new equipment.
When we then moved in with my parents, I had also then discovered our miscarriage and we had our scheduled d&c. So there were a couple of weeks where there wasn’t much fitness happening, and when I did start back up, I went back to mostly DVD workouts (like BodyPump!).
In August, we finally moved into our own house! I set up my totally random “workout area” in the dusty basement, and started doing a mix of DVD workouts and circuit strength workouts.
At the end of September, I found out I was pregnant. Since my first pregnancy did not involve much in terms of strenuous exercise (due to recovering from HA), I was a bit nervous on how to proceed with workouts this time around. After talking to my doctor, she reassured me that I would be fine doing what I had been, with modifications if/when needed.
That didn’t matter much because by mid-October, my all day nausea had set in and there was about two solid months where fitness wasn’t happening much at all. Finally, around the beginning of December, I started getting my mojo back and have been feeling great ever since.
So with that whole trip down memory lane, I guess my point is to say that, despite the ups and downs and chaos that happened in 2015, I still managed to keep fitness fun. When I did feel up to it, and when I did have the time for it, it was something I looked forward to and legitimately enjoyed. And that is my goal for 2016: to keep fitness fun and exciting.
Granted, 2016 will no doubt be interesting in terms of fitness, since there’s that whole new baby thing happening in June. My hope is to continue to exercise for as long as my body will let me, and when it tells me that it’s time to slow things down, then I’ll do just that.
Once the baby arrives? Well, I’m going to have to navigate that one when we get there. You guys know that early morning workouts are my jam, but with a newborn, they aren’t always feasible. Middle of the day workouts are alright, but since I’ll likely be going back to work about 12 weeks after the baby arrives (stupid US maternity leave…) that won’t be an option for very long. But again, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.
******************
Jay and I were talking a couple of weeks ago about our goals for the new year and whatnot, and we got on the subject of fitness and exercise. By nature, Jay doesn’t totally love working out. He’s not an early morning workout kind of person, and when he gets home from work, he’d rather spend time with us (not that I’m complaining!) or work on whatever project he likely has going on.
He knows that he wants to get back into something, but since we don’t plan on getting a gym membership anytime soon, our options are limited to what we have at home.
I also agreed that, while I love doing the various workout DVD’s that I have, or videos online, I do occasionally miss the gym setting and different weight selections and machines that it offers. So we started doing a little bit of research.
This month, as a part of being a member of the Sears Blogger Squad, I was gifted a $100 gift card to use towards something new from Sears that would help me achieve my New Year’s goals. And after chatting more with Jay, we agreed that a new weight system would be a fun and worthwhile investment. Soooo…
We ended up purchasing the Weider Pro 6900 Weight System (which is currently on sale for $299.99!) from Sears.com and utilized Sears’ In-Vehicle Pick Up service to pick it up from our local store (as opposed to having to pay an additional $69.99 for shipping). While it was a bit of a process to actually get the box home (thank goodness for friends with pick-up trucks…the box was huge!), it was well worth the money saved.
Jay spent some time over the weekend putting it together (again, a bit of a process!), and we actually still have a few last pieces to check out.
But now we’re the proud owners of a brand-spankin’ new weight system. And I’m SO excited!! Plus, we’ve changed our basement plans a bit to have a separate workout room, which I think is just going to be awesome. Who needs a gym membership?!
Part of keeping fitness FUN for me, is keeping up a variety. And sure, while I have a good variety of workout DVD’s to choose from, it’s nice to have something different other than watching a video. I can’t wait to put together some new circuit workouts to do…and if/when I do come up with some, I’ll try to share!
Jay is looking forward to getting back into some weight lifting again, and I’m thinking that the new equipment will be a great motivator for him, too.
As for Sears, did you guys know that they’re America’s #1 fitness retailer? You can find tons of great brands like NordicTrack, Life Fitness, or Weider (just to name a few), and they always carry a huge selection of fitness equipment and sporting goods in store and on Sears.com. Everything from treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, weight sets and more so you can easily and affordably create a personal gym in your own home. Like us. ;)
And to help you get started…

I too would get something fitness related! My New Years resolution is also to keep fitness fun but a part of my regular life. Its so hard for parents working full-time to fit it all in, and I’m definitely in the same boat! Food blogging, working and parenting keep me really busy, but I love the way I feel after a workout so I really want to do it more!

I am looking at all the same “unknowns” as you … used to go to the gym regularly but don’t have the time anymore, love early morning workouts but am facing having baby #2 and who knows about getting up that early either, haha. So, I’ll be looking to pull something together for awhile especially after the baby comes and get back in shape :)

I would buy that exact product, I am approaching60 years old and need to get myself in better shape
Kate Waterbury says
We have an amazing home gym that I spent some time building for myself last summer (when we moved further away from the gym….not ideal for 5 am workouts). Right now, the plyo box and TRX band are my favorite home-gym tools, but I would love a spin bike to add a steady-state cardio option!
Holly Dolan says
I would definitely put it towards a weight bench and some bigger weights!
Sara @ LovingOnTheRun says
I would use it to the purchase of a new treadmill! I run every morning starting at 4:15 AM and when the weather is bad or I don’t feel comfortable I will go downstairs to our treadmill, which is currently on its last leg! This would be a great start towards helping get us a new treadmill which will also allow my husband to run on it (our current one shuts off on him when he goes certain speeds). P.S. Love your weight set!

Nicole H says
The hubs and I are in the market for a treadmill for our basement so $100 would be a great boost to the treadmill fund!
Dee says

Melissa @ Freeing Imperfections says
Thanks for being so open about fitness during pregnancy. I had no idea how much fitness would take a back seat when I became pregnant, even though I was in really good shape before hand. Now that I’m post-baby, fitness is my main focus for the new year.
If I won the gift card, I’d like to get some more workout clothes. Because you can never have enough and they keep me inspired to look good :)

Lynora says
My husband and I had this conversation literally last night! We are building a house right now and when we move I am dropping my gym membership because building a house is a lot of money! :) so we are including an excercise room in the basement and will be buying a treadmill. My husband doesn’t work out much except for golf, but he’s hoping to change that this year and we think a treadmill in the basement will be a big help. A weight system like you bought would be amazing too.
Erin says
We are currently in the market for a new washer and dryer so it would go towards that!
Mallory says
A treadmill! It’s not feasible to get out of the house with a baby and head to the gym!

I just bought a used treadmill and tried it last night, in LOVE! I’ve never has gym equipment at home and I think it’s fabulous. Trying so hard to kick my new momma weight (twins!) and since I can’t get outside, or to a gym for that matter, I would adore this opportunity to buy something (NEW?!) for myself, what a treat :)

Emily G says
I would use it for more workout clothes and sports bras that are actually comfortable/fit! My goals for 2016 – get my daughter sleeping through the night regularly again so I can get some sleep to have more energy to focus on workouts and healthy eating. When I am rolling on 3 hours of sleep work is rough and I have zero motivation for healthy eating/workouts.

Our current one is a decade old and completely worn out – so a new one would really make for some great sleep around here :)
Megan says
I would surprise my husband and get him this! He is amazing and stays home with our daughter right now so he doesn’t get much time to go to the gym. He would love this!!

It doesn’t sound super fun, but i would put it towards a new dishwasher. Ours is almost 10 years old and the racks are rusting, despite repeated attempts to cut off the rust and seal it up again. (It would mighty nice to have a new one — with 2 kids we use that appliance a lot!)
This year i’m working on the little habits that keep me healthy and will hopefully result in losing the 10-15 pounds i put on last year. I now use a standing desk at work and cut back to only one cup of coffee per day (i’m a sugar and creamer gal).
christy says
The gift card would be great for us to purchase some home weights… we just purchased an ellipitcal (which has been fabulous!) since it was so hard to get to the gym with a 2 year old this past year… like you I prefer to get it out the way in the morning or now I can do it during nap time. The weights would be a nice addition to our growing home gym :)
Kate says
My 2016 goal is to be more in the moment. Between two jobs and other various activites I find myself just going through the motions. As far as the gift card…i’m in need of a new dresser! Love the new weight machine you guys got!

We’ve always wanted to do this. We’ve always wanted a weight bench.
I’d have to say either furniture to fill out our new house, fitness equipment (I want to get those connecting foam pieces that make a padded floor for excercise and a bench. I’ve also always dreamed of owning my own elliptical), or maybe even stuff for our new puppy we’re adopting when he’s ready at the end of February! Like new dog beds for all of our doxies to use.
The list could go on, sigh.

Although, the “fun” side of me would want to buy the PowerBlock Sport 2.4 “adjustable” weights. I don’t know that I really have any fitness resolutions for the year. I’ll be having our second baby in May and I know that figuring out the when and where or working out will be a little more challenging. I would love to get a treadmill or eliptical trainer to help out with getting in some running/walking.
Katie says
I would get a new yoga mat for sure and maybe even one for my husband! My fitness and health goals for 2016 are to work out at least 3 days a week and have more fun with my workouts. I was a bit too repetitive in 2015
Melissa H says
I would buy some new fitness weights and maybe a cute shirt or 2 here or there :)
My resolution for this year, is to be more present, mainly when I’m home with my kids. Too many times ipads and phones get in the way of quality time and being totally present. I never get that time back and I want to make the most of it while I can, everything else will still be there tomorrow :)
Cathy says
I would put it towards a treadmill, I love to run in the mornings, but lately it is just too dark to safely run before work.

This is a random one, but maybe a little moveable heater? A space heater I think they’re called! I am NoT a morning workout type person by nature…but I’m trying.. And our apartment’s heater does not reach the bathroom well especially if it’s been on low all night so showering post-workout and pre-work is so cold and dreadful :( Can’t I just be smelly?! haha

Since we are expecting our first little one in April my first one goal of 2016 is to be a great mother and wife and learn out to balance the two. One part of this is health and fitness. I’ve been blessed to be able to workout throughout my pregnancy but the workouts are getting more limited since I am coming upon my 3rd trimester. Since I see my workout being more and more home related I’ve been wanting to purchase a row machine. Much like this one: http://www.sears.com/waterrower-s1-rowing-machine-accessories-heart-rate-kit/p-SPM11416279315?prdNo=9&blockNo=9&blockType=G9
