Challenging Negative Self-Talk

Hey hey! How’s everyone doing on this lovely Thursday morning? I’m gonna whip right though breakfast because I’ve got more important things to talk about this morning.

Today’s breakfast was a perfect combo of sweet and savory: a toasted Thomas’ Blueberry Bagel Thin topped with raspberry Polaner All-Fruit + 2 egg whites.

I still had some diced tomatoes left from Saturday’s mac & cheese, so I added them into my egg whites, along with a little dried basil, salt, and pepper.

Add a little iced coffee to round out the meal, and I was good to go!

Now, onto a new topic.

Challenging Negative Self-Talk

Last night as hubby and I were going to bed, we ended up sort of joking back and forth about some of the things we don’t like about our bodies, making a few nonchalant comments along the lines of “thunder thighs” and “Buddha bellies.”

Now, typically, I’m really not one to enjoy taking part in negative self-talk. It’s totally unnecessary, it gets me nowhere, and it leads to nothing but disappointment and frustration. I’ve been down that road before one too many times, and I try really hard not to travel it very often.

But, truth be told, negative self-talk does creep up on me every once in a while. Some days, I’m better at disputing the negative thoughts; some days I’m not. To be honest, yes, there are things about my body that I would like to change. Thanks to my overall love for summertime sweets, fro yo, and adult beverages, I have put on a couple “el bees,” which have landed in the inevitable thigh and belly area (which is where I’m prone to gain weight).

Sure, I know what I need to do to fix that problem, and I will reel things back in. But honestly, I’m enjoying all of these things, and I don’t want to worry about denying myself of them. But really, that’s besides the point of this whole conversation…so back to last night.

As Jay and I were winding down our jokes back and forth to each other, he ended up saying, “Hey, well, I didn’t hear you say anything about your arms?” And he’s right, I hadn’t said anything about my arms. I thought about it for a minute and then responded with, “Well, yeah, that’s because I like my arms.”

And the more I thought about, the more I realized…yes, I really do like my arms! And then I thought about it some more and realized that I wish I’d always been this good at challenging my negative self-talk.

I…you…WE can challenge negative self-talk. Once we learn to notice our own negative self-talk as it happens, we can dispute those negative (and often, irrational) thoughts by replacing them with positive ones. Sure, learning to challenge these negative thoughts may take time and practice (it has for me), but it’s so totally worth it.

Okay, so I’ll go first!

Lately, I’ve been noticing some more definition, especially in my shoulder area, that I’ve totally been loving.

This is huge for me, especially considering the fact that I used to thrive on comments about “how tiny” my arms were (aka, I was too thin and unhealthy).

I’ve also been digging my little bicep muscles that have recently began to show up. This picture is pretty hideous, and I’m really not even flexing all that much. But I got the genius idea to take this photo as I was eating breakfast this morning (which you can probably tell by seeing the bagel thin sticking out my mouth) and thought you’d all appreciate it. Ohh, I’m a special one. Winking smile

But hey, I guess all those early morning BodyPump classes are starting to pay off? Speaking of which, today’s class was killer and those shoulders of mine there were on FIRE.

But I loved every second of it.

So now, it’s YOUR TURN. Tell me…

Questions for the Morning:

How do you deal with negative self-talk?

Tell me one thing (or as many as you want!) that you love about YOU!

Don’t worry..“Would You Rathers” will return this afternoon. Winking smile

Yoga Review & A Breakfast Epiphany

Today is off to SUCH an amazing start. I love it!

I hopped out of bed this morning ready for run, already knowing that I only had a short one on the training plan today. There was no rain in sight, so I trekked it outside, finishing with some pretty good-for-me stats:

You see that blue bar at the very end there? Yup, that’s me kickin’ butt. Can I get a WOOP WOOP?

Since today’s run was short, and it’s been a while since I did any sort of yoga, I decided to channel my inner yogini and get my flow on. Wanting to try something different, I consulted my beloved Exercise on Demand and ended up choosing Body by Bethenny Yoga.

  • The video was about 40 minutes long.
  • It had my entire body feeling long, lean, and strong.
  • The poses were explained with nice detail.
  • Modifications were given when necessary.
  • Bethenny seems so totally relatable in this video!

I wasn’t totally sure how I was going to feel about the video at the beginning, but I will say I’m definitely a fan. I couldn’t believe just how much more flexible my hamstrings were from beginning to end. I feel like a brand new person!

So maybe it was the yoga that had me feeling ambitious in the kitchen this morning; but whatever it was, I’m glad it happened. Ladies (and the very few gentlemen that I know of who read out there), you have GOT to try this out.

Because I made these cookies yesterday, that meant that I had three leftover egg whites in the fridge (and, if you remember, nothing goes to waste here). But rather than whip up my typical veggie filled egg whites, I went with a NEW combo:

A Strawberry, Avocado, Scallion, & Goat Cheese Omelet

Oh mah gawwwwwd.

I am still drooling over this thing. All I did was dice up the strawberries, avocado and scallions, mix about 2/3 of them into my whipped egg whites (mixed with a little milk, salt & pepper) and let them cook away on the stove. Once it was ready, I topped it off with a smear of goat cheese, and the rest of the fruit and veggies.

If you’re hesitant on the strawberries in the egg whites…don’t be. Just trust me on this one, mmmkay? Have I ever let you down before?

Even if I have, just forget about that one…

On the side, I toasted up a Van’s Lite Waffle, and topped it with some honey, plain Chobani, and chia seeds.

This, my friends, was a breakfast fit for a queen. I want more!

The only thing that could have made this breakfast even better would have been coffee. I never brewed any up this morning, so I guess I’ll just have to grab one while I’m out running errands.

Oh darn. Winking smile

Question for the Morning:

Would you ever think to put fruits in your eggs/egg whites? What would you want to try?

Nothing Goes To Waste

I really don’t like wasting food.

Anytime we have leftovers in the house, I always make sure that they get eaten up (whether by me or Jay) or used up in one way or another. Case in point…

Yesterday when I was making the most amazing sugar cookies ever, I noticed that the recipe called for 3 egg yolks. Now, that could have meant that 3 egg whites ended up hitting the trash, BUT…I saved the whites in some tupperware and used them this morning for breakfast!

Talk about being resourceful, right? Winking smile I scrambled up my 3 leftover egg whites with a little milk (to make ‘em nice and fluffy!), along with some fresh basil, grape tomato halves, crumbled fat-free feta, and some S&P. They turned out delish!

On the side, I enjoyed another Lemon-Raspberry Muffin with a little butter.

They’re just so good!

I actually decided to throw some in the freezer today to save for another time.

Actually, that’s a lie. It was more of an attempt to prevent myself from OD’ing on them, seeing as through I’ve already made a fairly nice dent in the batch. Winking smile

I enjoyed breakfast while admiring my beautiful tulips. They’re really starting to open up!

Hopefully you guys aren’t getting sick of ‘em yet. Winking smile

This morning’s workout was a good one! I hit the treadmill for some intervals that looked a little somethin’ like this:

0-5 mins 4.0mph – Warm-Up
5-6 8.0mph
6-7 4.5mph
7-35 Repeat run @ 8.0 & walk @ 4.5 intervals
35-40 4.0 – Cool Down

I ended up hitting 4 miles almost exactly on the dot and finished as a nice, sweaty mess. It was a nice change of pace from my usual interval routine.

This afternoon, in addition to some un-pictured veggies & hommus, I also lunched on an incredible pumpkin yogurt mess. I had the perfect amount left in my large Oikos container, so I ate right out of that. Hey, less dishes!

You know what’s pretty cool? When you buy the large container that’s about to expire so you can save an extra dollar…and then you forget to make sure the cashier actually TAKES the coupon. Fail. Annoyed

But that’s besides the point…let’s talk about this fantastic, pumpkin-licious bowl!

In the mix: plain Oikos, canned pumpkin (1/3 cup?), 1/2 sliced banana, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, raisins, chia seeds, and granola.

I just love pumpkin in my yogurt! I wish it was more easily available year-round. If I had enough space, I’d probably stockpile cases and cases of it around Thanksgiving time. Winking smile

I’m so excited for my evening ahead! I’m meeting up with my dear friend, Sarah, for happy hour and dinner at one of our favorite spots, Bombers. They have some of the best burritos and margaritas around.

WOOT WOOT for girls night! Open-mouthed smile

Questions for the Day:

What do you do (if anything) to keep from wasting food?

When was your last “girls night?” Smile

Throw In A Little Variety

Ok, show of hands…who loves being woken up in the middle of the night by their beloved pet?

No, I didn’t think so…me either!!!  I love my dearest Cody to death, but last night, our pal would not stop clawing at our bedroom door!  We try to keep him out of the bedroom, just so his fur doesn’t get all over the place and cause my asthma to act up.  But every once in a while, he will sit on the other side of that door and claw at the rug until someone comes out.  Yes, he’s awesome.

On the positive side of things, he decided to start up again around 5:15, which gave me reason to catapult out of bed after him and then go ahead with my planned morning workout!  This morning I decided to switch things up a bit, starting with my 30 minute Turbocharge workout, followed by 30 minutes of Pilates.  I knew I’d have to work quick this morning to squeeze in both sessions, so I made sure to set everything out last night.

Dark, dreary basement!

This morning’s combo was fantastic, because it gave me a mix of cardio, strength training, AND stretching.  But let me tell you, attempting to do Pilates when Cody is around is NOT an easy task…

Exhibit C:

He’s such a ham!

By the time I was showered and ready for breakfast, my normal cravings were nowhere to be found??  Usually, I’m craving something sweet like oatmeal, cereal, or PB+banana.  But today, savory was calling my name, so I went with it!

I scrambled up 3 egg whites, mixed with some fresh basil leaves, tomato, and yellow bell pepper.  I figured this would be a good opporunity to work on beefin’ up my veggies for today. ;)  On the side, I had 2 of my Livin’ Spoonful crackers with a slice of melted Sargento reduced-fat provolone cheese.  These crackers were fabulous with the melted cheese on top!

And since you know me, you know I couldn’t go the whole meal without something sweet, so I added some fresh Farmers Market strawberries to round out the meal.

This was one scrumptious breakfast!! :-D

Here’s a couple new questions from reader Lindsay:

Q: What meal woud you choose to eat for every dinner for the rest of you life? Breakfast? Lunch?

A: BREAKFAST, hands down! :-P

Q: What is the BEST gift you have ever received?

A: This is a tough one.  My immediate reaction would be to say when my parents surprised me on Christmas morning with a brand new car in my senior year of high school!  That definitely topped the charts! :)

But I’ve also received so many other “gifts” which, while not exactly material, still mean so much more.  For example, the gift of maturity, forgiveness, & time, which brought my now husband (then boyfriend) back together after a year apart.  Without those three things, I don’t know where I’d be today.

What a great question!  So I’ll ask YOU this morning:

What is the best gift YOU have ever received?
