A Hard Day’s Work

By Courtney 40 Comments

I’ll bet you can’t guess what I did all day today…mwahahaha.

I’ll get to that in a second, but first, let’s talk lunch.

IMG_2780

I chomped on some carrots & hommus, alongside this fantastic sandwich. Last night while prepping dinner, I roasted up an extra batch of zucchini and yellow squash to have for during the week.

So today, I combined them with a toasted Thomas’ Everything Bagel Thin with melted provolone cheese, and an extra smear of hommus.

IMG_2782

It was so good. And doesn’t that little mountain of cheese poking through the middle of the bagel thin just make you giggle?

IMG_2784

Ok, well I found it amusing. Smile

So you may notice that my surroundings with lunch are a little different today, and THAT is because I was over at my parents’ house…

IMG_2789

Painting! How do ya like those lovely paint scrubs, eh? I know, they’re hot.

For as long as I can remember, my dad has always taken a week off of work right around the beginning of May to get a bunch of work done around the house. Since I’m currently not working, he nicely offered to “hire” me as a worker of his for a few days this week to help out.

So today, my day consisted of about five hours of painting, which has only further led me to one conclusion: I will not be applying to any painter jobs anytime soon. Winking smile

Mid-afternoon, I stopped to take a break and noticed some goodies sitting on the counter in the kitchen…

IMG_2788

Mom had baked! Peanut butter & chocolate chip cookies, to be exact. So I dug right in and helped myself to two.

IMG_2787

By around 4:00, my painting was just about done for the day, and as I was wrapping up, I was beyond excited to see that my Mom had come home with coolattas from Dunkin’ Donuts! Talk about a nice treat after putting in a hard day’s work.

IMG_2791

My favorite coolatta from DD’s is a French Vanilla Coffee Coolatta w/ Skim Milk.

**FYI: Did you know that by ordering a coolatta with skim milk, you can save yourself almost 200 calories and 23 grams of fat??

This was actually my first coolatta of the season, but to be honest, I don’t really get them all that often. Even by ordering it with skim milk, it’s still loaded with extra sugars, but it is a nice treat to have every now and then.

Would you believe that when I first graduated college and started working, I would stop into a DD’s probably 2-3 out of five days every week and order myself a coolatta, a Boston Cream donut, and a Blueberry Cake donut?

Thank god I got myself out of THAT routine. Yikes!

**********

Tonight is a big night…it’s our first softball game of the season. Wish us luck! Open-mouthed smile

Question for the Day:

Have you ever had any bad fast food habits?

What a yummy little bagel sammie, the provolone cheese must have been delicious with the veggies. When I was in high school my mom would take me after school to McDonalds and I'd have a cheeseburger with fries and a strawberry milkshake. This was a religious routine everyday. Crazy how many calories that meal had especially considering that it was like an afternoon snack, not even dinner haha Good luck tonight :D

In grad school, I'd order 2 venti Sbux a day -- non-fat white chocolate mocha with raspberry and whipped cream...pretty sure they were about 500 cals each...but I wasn't eating then so that was my "food" intake .... meep!

Painting is one of my least favorite things to do! It is so monotonous!! The coolatta sounds good though!

Yum peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies!!! I wish I had someone to hire me for a days work right now! I use to have terrible fast food habits. I would go through McDonalds just for a large Diet Coke at least 3 times a day. I can still taste that fountain soda now.

Oh yes I definitely did!! In high school we were allowed to go off campus and once I got my drivers license it was "cool" to drive to McDonald's and get lunch there. In high school I practically ate fast food at least once during the week and multiple times during the weekends! UGH! Btw, love your bagelwich! I've seen it on Julie's too and now I'm definitely going to have to try it!

You look so adorable in your painting clothes :-) As you know, I'm a big DD girl. But I never got into the Coolata thing. You see, DD does not exist in Omaha. Yes, I know - it is strange and sad. When I go home, I go through major withdrawals. THUS, since my unhealthy habits were mostly in high school, I didn't have the pleasure of enjoying all of the good stuff DD has to offer. But don't worry, I found other places. Two bad habits I can recall: Saturday Tennis Day - 3 hours of tennis with a McDonalds break in between. Yes, I was playing tennis but smack dab in the middle, I picked up some chicken mcnuggets to fuel me through the second half. Taco Bell Friday Nights - It was the hot spot in Omaha. Whether we were hungry or not, we'd go there to see what was happening. I'd usually get a second dinner that consisted of two tacos and a bean burrito. YUM. Here's to a healthier post-Nebraska lifestyle. Woo hoo!

Bad fast food habits - OH yeah. Back in my "skinny" days (I only call them that because I didn't have to work at it) I'd eat fast food out every single day - KFC, Taco Bell, McDonalds, pizza, you name it. Plus Dunkin' Donuts every morning! Phew, glad my metabolism slowed if for no other reason than to break those nasty habits! Good luck at your game tonight!!!!

That bagel look awesome! And I too was amused by the little knob in the middle from the melted cheese! My fast food habits aren't too far away yet, I just started getting back into the healthy game last night! (Who says you need to start Monday morning, Sunday night is just as good as any time!) Due to the holidays and some seasonal illnesses I ended up not going on the treadmill and not making good food choices and then those old habits are so easy to pick back up! As for lunch it's not that I would go to fast food restaurants per say, I only get 30 mins for lunch at work which doesn't leave a lot of time for driving around, so the work cafeteria was quick and pretty cheap. Chicken tenders and fries, onions rings, fried chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, and other various fried goodies are what generally made up my lunches (not ALL of that in one sitting of course)! And there's also my Italian co-worker (who cooks for a huge family even though only has one kid still living at home) and she would bring in all the yummy homemade leftovers, and to keep it authentic, no cutting corners there, no part skim mozzarella or low sodium! And there's always the weekend where we would get together with friends at a restaurant and make less than good food choices and maybe add a few beers to that too! I'm looking forward to getting back into a healthier lifestyle and look forward to keep reading your blog for motivation!

As a local teacher, how did you get laid off mid-year? If it was a budget thing, that would have happened at the end of the year, effective the 11-12 year, correct? Have you tried substitute teaching? Great way to get your foot back in the door.

It's sort of a personal situation, so I'd prefer not to get into too many details. But I am considering substitute teaching.

When I first started teaching I always had a sausage and egg mcmuffin on my way to work. I never woke up in time to eat breakfast so Micky D's it was. In High School Wendy's was a habit after band practice because we'd walk across the street for dinner. 2 Junior Bacon Cheeseburgers with fries and a large frosty. Man that added up.

Painting is such hard work, it's not so bad at first but then as the hours pass-PHEW! I used to have a pretty bad Starbucks habit, and now I'm back into another habit of getting a soy chai latte at a little coffee shop near my school...sooo good I'm gonna have a hard time quitting!

Even though painting is SO not fun, it sounds like you had a good day (or at least you're selling it, which is totally what counts! ;)) I have never been super into fast food, but I used to buy a pint of Ben & Jerry's Southern Pecan Pie ice cream (which I don't think they make anymore, sad), and a bag of cheddar pretzel combos at least twice a week in combos. I enjoyed them while studying and drinking Diet Dr. Pepper. Because the "diet" was so necessary at that point. Can you imagine??

Hehe, I love the cheese :) When my brother and I were kids, we'd always con my dad into taking us to Burger King for Whoppers and then Dairy Queen for Blizzards. I got the Whopper because my brother did, even though I never really liked them much...and after eating the whole value meal, I'd down a Reese's blizzard. I have no idea how all of that fit into my 8 year old stomach.

I had this conversation the other day with someone and we were debating about what was considered fast food. Is cosi? Is chipotle? Or is it just related to places like McD's and Wendy's that give you this dollar menu option that is located on most blocks in every city! I think one of the things that I fall victim to is thinking sweet potato fries are good for you, even though they're still fried. Oops!

I've definitely had bad food habits. In high school, a group of my friends and I also went to Dunkin' and we'd get drinks, bagels and donuts. It was awesome, but probably not the healthiest. Then again, we just came from track or cross country practice ;) Mmm moms are the best!

What a great way to spend your day! I always love painting... for the first half hour. Then I think, "Why can't this be done already?" The end product is always worth it though! The last time I had a fast food 'habit' was in middle school. My mom took us to McDonalds or Taco Bell three nights a week. Yikes!
