Baby Tooth: 22 Weeks

By Courtney 40 Comments

Holy moly, the little man is growing!

22 weeks

Baby Tooth is just over 22 weeks today and is about the length of a spaghetti squash or papaya, depending on where you read. It’s so crazy (and fun) to go back and see just how much he’s growing in there…

13 weeksIMG_9948

Man, what a difference! And I say this to myself every time, but I swear, my belly always looks bigger (to me) in these photos than it does on a day-to-day basis. Either I have a really bad perception of things, or I stick my belly out too much for these pictures. Winking smile

Here’s what Baby Tooth has been up to this week:

  • Baby Tooth is about 11 inches long and almost 1 pound.
  • He’s starting to look like a miniature newborn! His lips, eyelids, and eyebrows are becoming more distinct, and he’s even developing tiny tooth buds beneath his gums.
  • His eyes have formed, but his irises (the colored part of the eye) still lack pigment.
  • Inside his belly, his pancreas — essential for the production of some important hormones — is developing steadily.
  • He’s sleeping in cycles — about 12 to 14 hours per day.

And here’s what’s been happening with me this past week:

Weight gained: Judging by what the scale said at my last appointment, I think I’m right around 14-15 pounds…but then again, I could be totally wrong.

Workouts: A few here and there. If my memory serves me correctly, I got in two planned workouts, but I also managed to throw a couple of quick, unplanned circuits in on a couple of days. On Friday, for example, I busted out a quick, 20-minute bodyweight circuit at work, and on Saturday I wound up doing an easy upper body weights workout. I’m also doing my best to get as much walking in as possible during the day.

Symptoms: This past week was a bit more rough than most previous weeks have been:

  • Still have round ligament pains and low back pain, but I also keep getting a weird sensation/pain in my upper stomach and wraps all the way to my back. It’s almost like a super full feeling in my stomach, and my upper back just feels like wicked sore. Not sure what’s up with that.
  • Nausea…a few days this past week were worse than others, with Wednesday probably being my worst. I just felt queasy and yucky all day long. The rest of the week the queasies would come and go.
  • Hunger wasn’t too crazy this week, which was mostly due to the queasy thing going on.
  • Frequent sensations to need to use the bathroom, but not having to go nearly as much as I feel like I do.

Movement: Yuppers! Nothing for dad yet though.

Food Aversions: For about four days, I couldn’t touch peanut butter. Didn’t even want to think about it (SO weird, right?). Luckily that went away by this past weekend, and PB is back. Other than that, the thought of shrimp still freaks me out, and I’m not really digging coffee again.

Food Cravings: Ranch dressing (Chelsey got to hear all about this one day this past week!), chai tea (had to have it twice this past week), red meat (especially a cheeseburger, although I didn’t have one this week), and sweet carbs.

Sleep: Ehh, so-so. I’m waking up pretty frequently for bathroom breaks and/or because I can’t get comfortable. There’s also been numerous times where Jay will nudge me and wake me up to tell me to roll over from being on my back. I don’t know why but I roll onto it in my sleep almost every night. I’m also wondering if investing in a body pillow or something similar would help with my sleeping…anyone have any thoughts on this??

Stretch marks? Nada!

Miss Anything?  Pre-pregnancy workouts and wearing regular pants. I can still wear most of my regular jeans as long as I either do the rubber band trick or wear my bellaband, but I just miss being able to button them regular. Smile

Fun and/or Interesting Things from the Week: Buying the rest of our nursery furniture!

Belly Button in or out? In…and I will be absolutely SHOCKED if it ever goes out. I have quite the inny belly button, so little guy will have to work hard to make that happen.

Wedding rings on or off? On.

Happy or moody most of the time: Definitely happy, but this week also included quite a few instances where I would feel overwhelmed by everything. I have soooo many thoughts running through my mind – why can’t I pick a stroller I like, why can’t I find the type of bedding I’m envisioning, I have no idea how to decide on the look of the nursery, what am I going to do about daycare, am I even going to be a good mom?!? As you can see, most of these are miniscule things, that I know will eventually be worked out. I think those hormones of mine have just been working on overdrive this week. Winking smile

New Baby Items: I actually did have my latest Amazon purchase come in this past week…new reading material!

  • The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems: Sleeping, Feeding, and Behavior–Beyond the Basics from Infancy Through Toddlerhood
  • The Happiest Baby on the Block
  • Secrets of the Baby Whisperer: How to Calm, Connect, and Communicate with Your Baby

I’ve heard a lot of great things about each of these three books and I’m excited to dive right into them. I’m really bad at giving book reviews though, so I can’t promise I’ll be able to come back with a full one at any point, but I’ll try my best.

Other than that, we did buy the rest of our nursery furniture over the weekend (although we still need to find a bookshelf of some sort), and we did receive some new baby clothes.

IMG_9952

My mother-in-law hooked us up with a full bag of practically brand new newborn outfits for a baby boy, which she found at local thrift shop. Everything is adorable, but I think my favorite is this gator hoodie.

IMG_9954

And I also received this absolutely adorable set from my good pal, Ashley, over the weekend.

IMG_9951

I mean, how adorable is that, right?!? It was so sweet of her to think of us. Smile

Looking Forward To: Jay being able to feel our little guy, having the nursery cleared out, and hopefully making some progress with it!

Question for the Moms:

Was there a particular time during your pregnancy where you began to feel overwhelmed? What helped ease your nerves?

Not feeling overwhelmed yet! And yes, the ranch dressing conversation was a good one - if I had been you, I'd have just dipped my finger.

I am 32 weeks and I purchased the boppy at around 25 weeks. I used it for a little, but it takes up so much room that I just found it to be bulky. It kinda got in the way. It does keep you off your back though. But, everyone is different! My sister in law loved hers when she was pregnant!

I HIGHLY recommend getting a body pillow to sleep. I was having a terrible time sleeping early on during my pregnancy because I would end up on my back, or I just couldn't get comfortable (used to always sleep on my stomach). I got the Comfort-U body pillow and absolutely LOVE it. It's a little pricey, 100$ but has been worth every penny. I make a little "nest" with it and my pillows and have no problems getting comfortable. The only thing that wakes me up in the middle of the night now is having to get up for bathroom breaks.

Noooooo! Put. The. Books. Down! I read parts of Baby Whisperer when I was pregnant and when my daughter was a newborn and colicky and difficult, and it made me feel awful, like I was doing everything wrong! She seems to think you can have a newborn on a schedule and it's so not realistic. Very little of what she says is realistic actually. I learned to just trust my instinct and judgment, and now my girl is the happiest, easiest baby. I promise you, it comes naturally and you'll know exactly what to do to make that boy happy! Also, the registry/purchasing process is definitely super overwhelming, but you'll look back when it's all done and say "Phew..that wasn't so bad." And if you don't have everything you need, Jay or your parents can run and pick it up in the first few days. Don't stress about having all the "necessities", especially since a lot of them *aren't* necessary for the first few weeks.

I COMPLETEY agree with this!!! No book can predict what will work best for you and your baby. You will learn by trial and error and eventually figure out exactly what he needs. You're his mommy after all!

Completely agree with this post! I too read the Baby Whisperer who makes you think your baby will cry, you will know exactly what to do, and the baby will instantly stop crying. She gives you a sense that you will have control over the baby. False! In the beginning you have to follow the babies cues and certainly don't expect the baby to follow your idea of a suitable schedule. They sleep when they want and for how long they want. It is a MUCH better idea to trust you instinct and go with your gut. You will figure it out! I would recommend reading a book that teaches the basics of how to care for a newborn rather how to put a newborn on a schedule. My favorite book has been "Jo Frost's Confident Baby Care." It simple and straightforward.

LOVE happiest baby on the block! Also recommend "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby." LOVE that one. Such good tips & NOT strict like Baby wise. Part of pregnancy that I felt overwhelmed...hmm...well, I never really got too overwhelmed, only because we set up her nursery & everything in the SUMMER - even though I wasn't due until November. Any guesses why?! Umm...Football addicts. i knew that I would not be able to MOVE my husband from the couch come fall, so we just did it all early :) I was VERY VERY VERY (indescribably) when I was told it was time to push. EMOTION OVERLOAD in the VERY BEST possible way EVER! :D

One piece of advice I will give (i am sure you are sick of advice) is to follow your intuition - you already are a great mother - and you will know what is working best for you! I read the baby whisperer and put parts of it to work in our home (i learned to watch / listen to my daughters cues for when she is tried and now i lay her down between 8:30 - 9 when i know she's tired, and she goes to sleep with just a little talking to herself!) so don't beat yourself up if you little boy doesn't fit into a mold! You look fantastic and everything WILL come together!

I definitely was feeling overwhelmed right around the 20-25 week mark too... I think it's because everything was starting to feel so much more REAL! There's so many different styles, brands, reviews, you name it out there, that it's so hard to know what you want when you've never done this baby thing before. That being said, I can totally relate! Just be patient with yourself, do your research, and don't overstress. Like you said, it'll all get worked out and half of the things we worry about probably won't even matter in the end. ;) xoxo

I think, if I have ONE regret this pregnancy (I'm at 36 weeks), would be that I didn't invest in a body pillow to sleep with. I started struggling with sleep a bit later, around 28 weeks and it has only gotten worse. Then, throw in sciatic nerve pain (aka sharp pains in your booty that lead to numbness in your legs), sleep is HORRIBLE. I kept putting off buying the pillow b/c of the price and now that I'm on the home stretch I definitely don't want to pony up the money. So, if you are thinking about the pillow now, I definitely would get it sooner than later. Your quality sleep will only get worse (sorry to say! :() and I have heard those pillows are amazing!

I also have the Snoogle pillow, but to be completely honest, there have been many mornings that I wake up and I'm on my back with my legs on top of the snoogle (I dont sleep with it wrapped around me, just in between my legs, so maybe that's why). I WILL say - ask your doctor about sleeping on your back. Every person is different and so is every doctors advice. I asked mine way back when and he said that typically he is only concerned with back sleeping if someone is carrying multiples. He told me as long as I'm comfortable, to sleep however I want to sleep (until the last month). There have been times that I've been on my back for too long and I wake up and can tell that I'm uncomfortable, so I roll over. Your body won't let you do anything that will cause harm (at least that's what I believe). It's mainly because of the pressure the baby can put on your organs and stuff, but I promise, as soon as that baby is hitting something because of you being on your back, you'll know immediately :) Check with your doc!

I've actually heard the same thing from a few people, and I think it's great advice. There was one time I woke up on my back and was comfortable, so I definitely took that as a sign from my body telling it to move. I guess it's just the worry wart in me. ;)

I think the books are great! THey give you knowledge to apply to your situation as you see fit. I had belly pain similar to what you are describing when I was pregnant with my little boy. It was AWFUL! The only thing that helped was to lay down. The Dr never did diagnose what it was and it went away when the baby was born. I got really overwhelmed about 30 weeks. Don't stress, you still have plenty of time!

Do it for your own sanity so you can squeeze in as many hours right now! Hehe, and also, it helps balance your body and keeps it from teeter tottering as you sleep on your side. :)

My youngest is 8 now, but I remember my pregnancy vividly. I wish that I had taken better care of myself (in regards to watching my food/sodium intake) especially since I ended up in the hospital on bed rest for a whole month before having a c-section. I did find it rather overwhelming to be working full time with terrible morning sickness that pretty much lasted my whole pregnancy. I applaud you for taking such good care of yourself as it's easy to just let the exhaustion and cravings take over!

I often rolled onto my back, too. My doctor said not to worry about it too much because if it was really a problem, it would be hurting me and I would stop automatically. However, I will say that I got a certain unpleasant pregnancy symptom that I don't like to share with the universe and I think it MAY have been due to sleeping on my back, but I don't know for sure. If you'd like details, feel free to email me. ;) Good luck, girl! You look beautiful!

Okay there are like a million things I want to comment on in this post - ha! 1 - That stretching sensation you're feeling could be Braxton-Hicks contractions, but I'm NOT a Dr. so I'd obviously just ask your OB to see what they think. I was surprised to learn in my Prepared Childbirth that Braxton-Hicks could start as 20 weeks. My teacher (who is a nurse) told me that I'd probably had Braxton-Hicks, I just didn't realize what they were (I'm 26 weeks). 2 - I know exactly what you mean about having to go pee SO BAD and then getting there and it's barely anything...so weird. Our teacher, who I mentioned above, showed us a picture of a woman's insides pre-pregnancy and during pregnancy though, and it has really amazing how squished everything is in there right now so having to pee all the time kind of makes sense! 3 - I am using a body pillow and it's really helped me sleep better! 4 - I'm not sure if you're looking for maternity jeans yet since you can still rock yours (go you!), but if you are Motherhood Maternity has some really great ones. They're not cheap (not super expensive either), but for me they were SOOO worth it. 5 - I found my baby bedding at http://www.babybedding.com/ 6 - And lastly, I was most overwhelmed about baby stuff before we had picked a day care. To me, that was the biggest and most nerve wrecking thing to do. The process actually turned out easier than I though and after I was done with that a lot of my stress went away. I've also found that making lists and planning time to chip away at those lists a little bit at a time is helpful too. You look wonderful!!!

I started to begin feeling overwhelmed by everything we needed to buy around where you are right now. It begins to feel more real around this time. I thought I needed to research everything possible and try to pick the most perfect way to do everything! I now have a 3 week old and it's the best thing you can imagine. Newborns don't really need much besides milk, a place to sleep and all the love you can give them. There are so many baby products on the market that are unnecessary and you can always buy what you need and/or missed when the baby comes and you learn your baby. They don't really become colicky (if they ever do) until about 2 weeks or so and you'll learn a ton about your baby before then. You'll be perfectly fine!! Don't worry about anything and most of all ENJOY your pregnancy. I felt nostalgic about it after my baby was born.
