Here’s a fun little fact about Yours Truly to start off the morning…
It’s true. I’ve always loved all the different medical shows that actually show you different surgeries and things taking place. TLC has some great shows, but one of my latest favorites as of this summer is NY Med.
After I realized it was on (because I always forget) I put down my Fifty Shades Freed book and tuned in to watch. Oh my gosh, I just love it. Last night, they were doing heart transplants, and to see how it all works and see it pumping correctly after the transplant? Well that, to me, is just beyond captivating.
HOWEVER…if you try to show me anything with broken noses or teeth? Ughh…I’m done. Noooo thank you. I actually used to have students come up and show me their loose teeth and I’d have to turn away. It was awful.

Breakfast
I was really looking forward to this meal this morning. I woke up hungrier than usual, so I was more than ready to get things cookin’.
Along with another delicious mug of hot coffee, I threw together an easy veggie scramble made with two eggs, red pepper, onions, and broccoli.
On the side, I had another piece of Banana Chocolate Chip Bread topped with a little peanut butter.
Lots of variety this morning – not quite a breakfast buffet, but close enough.

Question for the Morning:
Do you enjoy watching medical shows? What sort of medical-related things make you most queasy?
Cait @ beyond bananas says
My cousin was on that show when they filmed in Boston a couple of summers ago! She is an ER nurse up there!!
Courtney says
No way!! That’s awesome
Shannon says
I think seeing real life medical procedures can be interesting, but it does make me queasy at the same time. That’s why I’ve never tuned into NY Med this summer. I do like medical shows like Body of Proof, when they use the victim’s body to catch the killer. I don’t know if you’ve seen it- it stars Dana Delany as Dr. Megan Hunt- but it’s fantastic. There have already been 2 seasons and the 3rd is starting sometime in the spring months. I’m very excited for the show’s premiere- it almost got canceled from this year’s line up. :( Thanks to the fans, that didn’t happen.
I’m not a big blood person. If I see someone that is drenched in blood and hurt real bad, I run away and get some help.
Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots says
I have never heard of that show. I was a huge ER fan growing up and loved that they played it all morning long on USA!
Alyssa says
That breakfast looks sooooo good! I’ll have to check out NYMed though, I’ve never heard of it but sounds like something that would hold my interest, too.
Suzanne @ Fit Minded Mom says
I love medical stuff and I do not really get too queasy from it! In fact, I have thought about going back to school to become a Surgical Technologist because I think surgery is very interesting stuff. I have pictures from my C-Section(awesome Dr who didn’t mind) and they are fascinating to me!!
pat says
I was watching that one last night and I agree….fascinating!
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers says
Cant’ say I’ve seen it. Then again, I’m one of those who can’t watch medical shows at all. Gives me the ickies. haha
Suzanne says
That’s too funny, Courtney! We were both doing the same thing…I just happened to flip to NY Med last night. I had never even know this show existed. And I was indeed captivated as well. This was not Grey’s Anatomy – this was the real deal.
I had to look away at the gorey parts, but I was so amazed and impressed. Doctors are amazing. The story of the woman with the tumor in her abdomen was so incredible. I cried the whole time. Bravo, doctors!
Courtney says
Oh I know! How she had gotten bad diagnoses so many times up until the last doctor! Crazy.
Beks says
When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a nurse, because my mom was a nurse, and I pretty much idolized her. One night, when my dad had to work late, my mom made mac n cheese from scratch, and we got to eat in front of the TV (a rare treat that has now turned into business as usual, sadly), and I saw that public television had a show on about a kid’s leg surgery. I was pumped to watch it, but as soon as that scalpel started cutting, I got really queasy and begged my mom to turn it off.
I then decided I wanted to be an artist, but now I’m a writer. I still like watching medical shows, though. Just not the actual act of cutting people open. “Rescue 911” was my favorite show as a kid.
Laurie @ Love, Laugh, Laurie says
That’s funny, we were watching suburgatory when NY Med came on and James made me change the channel because he was grossed out. I love it though!
Courtney says
Hahaha, I had Suburgatory on in the background while I was reading. That is a FUNNY show :)
Chelcie of Chelcie's Food Files says
i use to LOVE watching all these weird medical shows on discovery health channel when I was younger and my mom thought it was so weird that I liked them…i don’t watch much of it anymore but it still fascinates me!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Other people’s blood doesn’t bother me – the sight of my own is a different story!
Courtney says
Agreed!!
Candice says
me too!!! I love it all and brent (my hubby) hates them! How does jay feel about them?
I can’t wait for greys to start again! It is my absolute fave!
Courtney says
He could take ’em or leave ’em – he can’t watch as much as I can :)
Mary says
Hi Court! I have actually been a patient at NY Pres many times. I saw my doctor on NY Med briefly. (Unfortunately he was just flirting with a resident, not doing surgery!!) I have seen Dr. Oz there a couple of times. ( just spotted, he isn’t my doc) I also can watch surgery on TV, although I’ve never seen one in real life, however anything with teeth, broken or missing, freaks me out! The plus side of this fear is I do take pretty good care of my teeth to avoid this problem. Your blog is awesome!
Courtney says
No way?!? That’s awesome!
Mary says
Yes, but last night from 10-10:30 I watched Honey Boo Boo! Then I switched to NY Med
Claire says
I’ve never even heard of this show! I used to be OBSESSED with Grey’s Anatomy until junior year of college when I became too busy to watch it all the time :( I still wish I could catch up and know what’s going on now, but everyone says it’s gone downhill anyways. I think I’m too hooked on Modern Family these days to take any other shows seriously!
Courtney says
Hahahaha, girl, I hear ya! I cannot WAIT for Modern Family to come back on TV!
Rachel says
omg I loooove medical shows! I used to love Dr. 90210 actually haha all the surgery was so interesting for me
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I’m too squeamish for those kinds of shows! Even if it’s fake blood (and I know it), it’s usually too much! ha!
michelle kim says
I think broken bones or bones actually going through the skin are the only things that make me super queasy.
Courtney says
Yeah, I’ll agree with ya on that one – the bones going through skin can tend to make my stomach churn ;)
Andrea @ Andrea Out Loud says
im not TOO into medical shows but i really love/loved House!! and back in the day I always watched ER :)
MJ Keller says
FINALLY, someone who shares my obsession with these summer med shows! Every year they have a new one (Hopkins…) and it is always the highlight of my summer. I just wish they had a permanent series, year-around, of these shows! So so good.
I always fall in love with all of the characters, Katie is my favorite this season! And – without fail – it makes me cry every week.
Khushboo Thadani says
I used to be obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy…and funny enough, that had to do more with the content than McSteamy/Dreamy :)! Along with medical shows, I love law-based shows…some of the cases are so fascinating! Although the show’s over (I think), Boston Legal was a favorite!
Katie says
I used to love Grey’s Anatomy but stopped keeping track of the episodes once I had gone to college. For some reason those shows don’t bother me. It’s blood and guts in real life that tend to bother me. I’m more of a Scrubs type of medical show watcher. Aka. Less of the med part. :)
Courtney says
Oh man, Jay is OBSESSED with Scrubs! We have all the seasons on DVD ;)
Alysia @ Slim Sanity says
banana chocolate chip bread sounds so perfect right now!
Jen@HealthyFoodandFamily says
I’ve been watching it all summer, I love it and I’m pretty bummed last night was the season finale :(
Amanda Perry @ Sistas of Strength says
I am obsessed with NY Med. I was obsessed with Boston Med last year. I liked that one because I knew the hospitals (unfortunately) and used to live about a mile from most of them. This seasons is really freaking good though too…I cry every single episode, but usually tears of joy for the good outcomes. Love that show.
Michelle@Peachy Palate says
We have one called Holby City here which is great! I love documentaries too…like “24 hours in A & E! ” It depends on my mood and also if I’m eating whether or not I get queasy! If I cut myself though I’m a nightmare!
Jessamy @ The Rambling Asian says
Oh I love medical shows, but since my mom is a nurse nothing really makes me queasy. As a kid I watched on my dad’s chest while he was getting his knee fixed since he put a chain saw through it. My mom and I would have “gruesome” conversations at dinner with my best friend, and she would beg us to stop.
Speaking of teeth, yesterday I broke my tooth and I took a picture on my phone and texted it to my mom to show her! I will say working at a school I see loose teeth all the time, and offer to pull them too! Oh yeah, the more gruesome the better!
Lisa says
I’m the same way with medical shows! I can watch the transplants and stuff like that, but a nose job ick ick! Makes me cringe!! Which is weird since I’ve broken MANY bones before, so you think I’d be used to seeing/experiencing that stuff.
Yumm, your egg breakfast looks delightful! I think I may need to try out that banana bread recipe! I have about 3 bananas that are basically black right now! Perfect for banana bread!!
Morgan says
I love NY Med too! I am a nurse, but hated the hospital setting so now I work in an office as a Case Manager. Watching medical documentaries always make me want to go back to working acute care….but then I remember the crazy hours and the commitment it requires and I decide I am very happy where I am at :0). They do these medical documentaries every summer (last year was Boston Med), but I wish they had them on all year round because they are so fascinating!
Bek @ Crave says
Yes, not quite a breakfast buffet ;) Haha; but you still had your sweet and savoury covered!
Alex @ Healthy Life Happy Wife says
I’m actually a big fan of medical dramas, too. Even though I HATE the sight of blood! My favorites are Grey’s Anatomy (of course) & Scrubs (even though it is a bit silly – I just love Zach Braff!)
Lauren says
Loved NY med!!!! You need to watch the episodes of Boston Med and Hopkins…..all soooo good!
