Cupcakes, Weekend Things, and a Quick Motherhood Vent

By Courtney 13 Comments

My oh my, where does the time go?!

I’ve had this post half written since Sunday night, but just have not had the time to come back and sit down to finish it. I had hoped to last night, but my evening was filled with making 4 dozen cupcakes!

Man, I really do miss making cupcakes! Long time readers, you may remember when I seemed to have a new cupcake recipe, like, every other week?! Maybe some day I’ll get back into it again.

The reason for this large batch was because Lucas is celebrating his birthday at school today! There are apparently quite a few July birthdays in his class, and no April ones, so my guess is why they’re celebrating this month (since they aren’t in school in July, obvi).

But hey, here we are now, halfway through the week and I was all set to share a little bit about our weekend! There really wasn’t anything all that exciting going on, but we did have an absolutely gorgeous day on Saturday, meaning we spent as MUCH time as possible outdoors.

The boys played in the sandbox, we cleaned up a bit around the yard, and lunch was enjoyed al fresco for all!

Pretty soon we’ll be putting out all of our deck furniture, and I’d known since last season that I really wanted to refresh our outdoor furniture cushions. No matter how much I cleaned them up, then just had a really weird feel and smell to them, so I knew it was time to ditch them and replace.

Making a last minute decision, I quickly ran over to the At Home store during Alex’s nap time, and wound up buying a whole new set…

I had hoped I’d be able to find some cute patterned ones, but the sizes I needed were proving to be rather difficult to find. That’s alright though, I always love grey <3

Shortly after I got back home, we were out the door for Lucas’s first baseball practice of the season.

He seems really excited to play, and I’m excited to be able to watch again!

Also equally exciting was coming home and letting the boys play out on the deck while Jay and I sat and enjoyed a couple of Moscow Mules.

They tasted SO good, and I’m totally thinking they’re going to be a new favorite summer drink. But I feel like I need some copper mugs to go with them now?!

To cap off the weekend, Lucas attended a birthday party for one of his best buddies, which totally made his day, thanks to the monster trucks that were there.

And we also did a little decorating for Easter since, holy crap, it’s only a few days away!

As for one final thought to close out this post today, I just need to have a quick motherhood vent for a second…

Sooo, we are being further reminded every single day just how different our two kiddos are. I absolutely love how they’re so different, but what I’m not loving is this ridiculous stage that my sweet Alex is in right now. Oh. My. Goodness.

The whining. The tantrums. The yelling and screaming. The whining. Did I mention whining? I’m left feeling like I’m ready to rip my hair out almost every evening! Or if I’m extra lucky, I may even be ready to do it by 7:30 in the morning. Some days, Jay and I just look at each other and have zero idea what the heck to do.

Is THIS what everyone refers to when they talk about the “terrible twos?” Because let me tell you, we are totally in uncharted territory here, since this was nothing like what we had to deal with the first time around. I mean, threes and fours? THOSE were a challenge. No doubt. But if this is what two is like? I’m scared about the threes and fours with this little dude!

Ahh. Okay, that feels a bit better to put out there. So hey, if you’re also in a particular challenging season of parenting/life/whatever? Don’t worry, you are not alone, my friend. I feel you. Let’s have a virtual Moscow Mule together. <3

I have 2 boys (5 & 3) and my youngest is such a sour patch kid. He whines, complains, throws awful tantrums then says “Mom, I love you so much”! Hang in there and know your not alone! Parenting is not for the weak!

Kid 1 and kid 2 could never be the same of it would make parenting too easy?! Everyone terrified me of the 3s and 4s but the TWOS were AWFUL!!!! Anyone who said hello to her, she would scream.. in their face. I was Mortified. And even more terrified to experience 3 and 4. But the day she turned 3, things changed dramatically. Don’t fret! You’re probably just getting it all out early with this one :) in the meantime, Moscow Mules for all!!

My son is a week younger than Alex and the whining is nonstop here too! Drives us nuts. We’ve been trying to remind him of his big boy voice and that we can’t understand him until he uses it. Doesn’t always work but has helped. He also thinks getting in trouble is hilarious which I find even more frustrating.

I’m sorry Alex is having a rough patch! I don’t think anyone has it terrible for all of 2-4; I think it’s one to one and a half really tough year at some point in there plus some other not so glorious months. For my daughter it was 2.5-3.5 and boy was it tough sometimes. I have two scars from being bitten during especially bad tantrums! But after loooots of hard work she is a pretty well behaved and (mostly) pleasant 4.5 year old now. Have you read Ignore it? My mom always reminds me that even negative attention is attention and some kids love attention....proved to be true in our case!

Two boys over here, couldn't be more different! One is so laid back, easy going, follows rules, tears up at even the mention of a time out, the other, sassy, in and out of time out, trouble sharing, you name it. It's a good thing they made moms the way they did, because ya love 'em just the same! Great cupcakes, how great that not only can you bring sweet treats at your school, you ca bring homemade! Neither is allowed at my school.

My little man will be 2 in June and Oh. My. Word! I am scared for what 2 actually brings b/c we are already in the screaming, whining, kicking/hitting, totally fussy phase. Like you, most days end leaving me drained and some mornings are even like that. Everyone says he'll grow out of it but holy smokes, how long does that last?!

I have two kiddos ages 5 & 2. My daughter (5) rarely whines but we did have the typical 3-4 year old meltdowns. My son...whoaaaa whole other story!! Ace WHINER at age 2. I mean, he whines when I give him what he wants?! SHM. I have no advice, but wine helps! 😉

My kids are 3 and 2. The older one was a dream 2 year old - he rarely fussed or whined. The younger one? Oh boy. It is nothing but whining and screaming and not using his words. We like to say that if the second one had come first, there would never have been another one. It seems pretty par for the course for most families that I know.

Yes. These past few months around the 2.5 yr mark have been roooough. My little guy turns 3 next week and let me tell you he has changed so much the past month. My oldest was like this too and 3-4 were a breeze compared to the 2.5 yr old phase. Hang in there!! Our bad phase lasted 4 months but even being out of it for 4 weeks makes me forget how bad it was. I drank a lot of vodka those months. Then I got pregnant with baby #3 last month. Lord help us ;)

Our oldest didn't give us much attitude until he was 3.5 but his sister started pretty much as soon as she was 2 so I'm hoping she'll grow out of it quicker! And what worked to calm him down doesn't work for her but she's also a lot easier with some things (will eat anything whereas her brother is super picky). Parenting - it's fun!! Ha, but we all know it's very worth it.

Not about parenting, but - my favorite "extra" for a Moscow Mule is peach flavored vodka. I believe it's called a "Georgia Mule" then. SO freaking good.
