Fitness in the first trimester. Ohhhh, now that’s funny.
For the past 6 weeks or so, workouts for me have been slim to non-existent. As many of you know, I’m an early morning workout kinda gal. For one, I prefer to only shower once a day. And two, I just love the idea of getting it done and out of the way for the day.
Because once I’m home after a full day of work, all I really want to do is spend time with this guy.
So this has proven to be a bit of a challenge lately, since my early morning time has been overcome with varying amounts of morning sickness and nausea.
In case you missed it, I’m pregnant. ;)
Up until about 10 weeks of this pregnancy, the thought of a workout was daunting. Physically, I just couldn’t do it, even though I knew I wanted to mentally. But knowing myself, and not being dumb enough to push anything unnecessarily, I kept the workouts to a minimum.
During this time, I’ve also been wanting to eat all the carbs. And I’ve been constipated (TMI, sorry). And bloated. So I’ve been joking to Jay lately that while it looks like I may already be “showing,” it’s really just the food. Not the baby.
And you know…it’s fine. Really. I mean, no I don’t love it, but having this be my second rodeo on the pregnancy train, I remember this awkward stage of pregnancy and how much it really sort of stinks. Not only are you not feeling great, but you look more like you’ve just been hitting up the donuts too much than you are pregnant.
Right, ladies? Ya feel me?
Thankfully, over the past week or two, the all-day nausea has started to subside slightly, and I’ve been able to start squeezing in the occasional workout during the day. Some days, I’ll come home on my lunch hour and bust out a quick 20-30 minute video (lately it’s been barre videos or some 21 Day Fix), and weekends are a little bit easier, too.
And it feels GOOD. Even though I’m easing back in, it just feels good to MOVE again.
For the past few months, I’ve been sharing my thoughts on fitness along with CALIA by Carrie Underwood. Because that’s their motto…they want to know how you #staythepath on your own fitness journey.
So how am I going to stay the path? Well, my hope is that, as I continue into my second trimester, I’ll be able to keep up with the workouts. I think (and hope!) that once the morning sickness subsides, I’ll be able to get back to some early morning workouts again. Even if I can just get 1-2 in during the week, that’s fine by me.
Because when you’re not feeling your best, it helps to know that you’re at least doing something to try and feel better!
So, of course, I’ve got to give you guys some details on the amazing pieces I received from the CALIA collection this month because I. Am. Obsessed.
First, the Printed Capris shown above are amazing. I love how they’ve got a pretty pattern, but they’re still on the darker side. Their capris have always fit me great, and I love how they have a nice, wide waistband for a smooth fit.
The Cold Weather Cable Headband. I feel like headbands tend to look sort of awkward on me sometimes, but this one is not only adorable, but it’s super warm and soft. Plus, a major bonus…it didn’t wind up leaving me with hat/headband hair. You guys know what I’m talking about!
The Open Back Sweater is perfection. Seriously. It’s roomy, but not too bulky, it’s super soft, and the sleeves are long enough to comfortably wear and show off the snazzy thumb holes. (Added bonus, it’s on sale right now!)
Also layered underneath the sweater (and shown above in the post) is the Essential Tank Top in Purple Twilight. The length is nice and long and, just like all of the other CALIA pieces, the material is super soft and cozy.
The line is available exclusively at Dick’s Sporting Goods and at caliastudio.com, where I have no doubt you’ll wind up finding tons of adorable stuff. Like, I really, really, reeeeeally want to get this shawl cardigan. Oh, and I also have this Quilted Bag, which is absolutely perfect for when I don’t necessarily want to have a purse and diaper bag. It fits everything perfectly!

So yeah, things on the fitness front over here have been a bit slow, but for good reason! And I just hope that I’ll start to feel up to getting back into a regular routine again, whatever that may look like. I’ll be sure to share, because I know many of you are probably in (or have experienced this stage) in the past.
I think it’s just important to remember not to be too hard on yourself and give yourself grace. Whether it’s because of a pregnancy, an injury, or just a difficult stage of life, we all have phases where fitness may take a back seat. And that’s okay. We just need to jump back on when we’re ready…and I think I’m almost, sort of ready. ;)
How are you staying the path with your own fitness journey this fall/winter? Can anyone else relate to the awkward pregnancy phase or dealing with fitness taking a back seat?

Hi! I’m expecting baby number 2 too and though I’ve had to do a lot of modifications in my workouts, this pregnancy has allowed me to be so much more active than my last. I’m loving beachbody workouts in the Am plus some running here and there. The belly doesn’t tend to feel so awkward if you keep it moving all along the way!!

That’s great you’ve been able to be more active this time around, Bri! I’m hoping to get there soon…I just literally did not have it in me to do much of anything. The all-day sickness this time around has been rough!

I know exactly what you mean about that awkward stage of pregnancy’ lol, I think you described it perfectly!
I’ve been trying to keep up with workouts throughout my pregnancy, but they’ve definitely been hit or miss most of the time. I’m also a first thing in the morning workout kind of girl and most mornings I’m so exhausted I’d rather take the extra sleep. But I figure if there’s one time in my life to listen to my body, this is it! I can usually get one or two good workouts in throughout the week plus a few walks, and I feel like that’s been enough to keep me going!

Cute outfit! I haven’t been pregnant so can’t say on that but as far as it goes on the fitness front for this time of year its tricky no matter what. It’s nice that you understand it better since it’s baby #2 for you. I love reading about the pregnancy details from your blog and others because when we do start a family I feel like I will understand it better. Thanks for sharing!

Have you tried magnesium supplements for the constipation? I usually get them at Target- they are just magnesium pills. I take two each night. It has been life changing. I would check with your dr first, but definitely worth looking into.

Love that sweater! Cute, cozy and perfect for all kinds of activity. Hope you feel more up to working out soon!

Gah constipation is a serious pain in the butt…pun not intended! Psyllium husk in water helps a lot of people, about 1 tbsp in a 200ml glass of water or juice. LOVE the cosy headband!

I am also expecting baby #2(24 weeks) and workouts this time around have not been what they were in my first pregnancy. My nausea has stuck with me this whole pregnancy and working out seems to heighten it. BUT I am trucking along and thankful for this little babe growing and growing.

Congrats!!!!! Amazing news and you look great!

You look adorable! Love the outfit. And just FYI I starting showing almost immediately with baby #2!

I know exactly what you mean about this stage of pregnancy. I remember asking my husband at the time, “Do I look pregnant or just fatter? If someone passed me on the street, would they think I’m pregnant or just chubby?” To which I got the “deer in the headlights” look. Uh-huh… :( It’s a terrible stage. You look great, tho! I think I gained more weight in my 1st trimester than the rest of them! (I must have craved the carbs, too; I don’t remember – it was 16 yrs ago!)

I read this post this morning (got a little behind from the holiday!) and love how you approach fitness. At lunch I was reading an article about thinking of fitness as a lifelong practice rather than a short-term solution to some other problem, and it reminded me of this post and thought you might enjoy it: http://greatist.com/move/fitness-lifelong-practice. It seems to speak to the same idea of staying on the path of a fitness journey.

Thanks for sharing that, Katie! It was a great read!
