1. I’ve been on a kick all week of putting cucumber and lemon in my water, and I’ve actually found that it’s making me want to drink more water than I typically do.
Hey, whatever works, right?
2. Jay, Lucas, and I are supposed to be going apple picking this weekend and I’m so excited about it! We’re supposed to be going to a nearby orchard that supposedly has a TON of stuff to pick, rather than just apples. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we actually follow through with those plans (since it’s not uncommon for us to be like “ohmygod let’s do ‘x’ this weekend” and then…it doesn’t happen. Anyone else have that prob?
3. Have you guys ever heard of the Band-Aid Friction Block Stick? My friend Morgan told me about it forever ago and I just recently remembered to pick one up.
It actually works really well on helping with the extra friction that rubbing shoes can cause and I have a couple pairs of shoes that it’s definitely needed for.
Works pretty well though!
4. Okay, I am seriously SO excited to go see the movie Gone Girl (it opens today!). Have you guys seen the trailer for it yet? Looks pretty eerie…and pretty freakin’ awesome! I’m hoping we can find a night for our Book Club gals to go see it soon, since we all read the book back in March.
5. Today is wedding day! I’m off work and will be spending the day celebrating my friends Eileen and Dan who are getting married up in beautiful Saratoga. I’m really hoping that my bridesmaid dress makes it through the day/evening for me…let’s just say that I probably should have tried it on a bit sooner than this past Monday. It’s a tad snug around the ol’ thighs and a bit big in the chest (freakin’ breastfeeding…).
6. Lucas will pretty much try to “talk” on anything that could remotely resemble a phone these days.
It’s hilarious.
7. For the longest time, I was convinced I couldn’t do kale. I’d tried it a few times, a few different ways (i.e., kale chips, sautéed, in a salad) and I just couldn’t do it, so I wrote it off. Recently, I was talking to my friend Kanika and she told me that I absolutely HAD to give it another try, but to buy a fresh bunch of it, not the pre-bagged stuff (which is what I had previously had).
I’m happy to report I am now back on the kale train! I’ve had it my smoothies all week and tried some sautéed, both of which I loved. I even used it in this week’s batch of Easy Cheesy Spinach Kale Pasta for Lucas, and he’s diggin’ it too.
Who knew?!
8. Do you guys remember back in August when I told you that I was going to be participating in the Runner’s World Half and Festival? Well, unfortunately, I had to back out. I had a few factors leading up to my decision (partly work and home priorities related), but I also realized that I really was just not prepared and, honestly, didn’t feel right taking a spot when someone else would probably go and enjoy it way more than me.
But for those that still may be interested in participating but haven’t bitten the bullet yet, registration is still open! You can register HERE, and use my discount codes to get 10% off your registration:

9. I just love fall in New York.
And if we could juuuust completely bypass winter and head straight into spring, I’d be one happy camper.
Danielle says
Would you mind sharing the name of the orchard where you can pick more then apples? That sounds fun!
Courtney says
It’s Samascott down in Kinderhook!
Alex says
Beautiful picture of the leaves changing colors in NY. Best time of the year :) I second the request of skipping winter.
We make plans early on in the week too, all zealous and ready to conquer x.y.z on the weekend….and then we don’t do any of it! :) Sometimes it is nice to just relax after a long week. Have fun if you go apple picking. We are hoping to do it sometime this fall too.
Hillary | Nutrition Nut on the Run says
glad you’re on the kale train! :) hope you get to go apple pickin’
Stacey M. says
As a fellow upstate New Yorker (I live near the Tug Hill), I also love fall! I went for a long bike ride last night and absolutely enjoyed the scenery. There really is no place I’d rather be this time of year … we are so lucky to be able to enjoy the change in seasons. I haven’t fully gotten into the season yet (i.e. no pumpkin everything for me just yet) because it’s felt more like summer around here these past few weeks, but I think it will start to feel more like fall this weekend for sure. 50’s for a high??? Now that’s what I call fall :)
Have a great weekend – I hope you actually do make it to the apple orchard. :)
Carrie (This Fit Chick) says
I LOVE fall in New York too! gorgeous! its been TOO hot here in LA, so I want that weather! I never thought to put kale in smoothies! I thought it would be too strong of a taste, but nice to know it works!
Julie @ A Better Life with Burgers says
Oh man, Lucas is so cute with the phone thing! And I’m like you with kale…am I really up for all the prep work of buying it fresh? Is it worth it? And that picture of the trees…I visited Buffalo once in the fall and loved it!
Britt@MyOwnBalance says
Oooh! Have fun apple picking! We went last weekend and it was amazing! I can’t wait to see Gone Girl!
Ashley @ A Lady Goes West says
It’s amazing how a little flavor in your water and help with the consumption process. I haven’t put cucumber in mine in a while, but you remind me that I should. Have fun at the wedding!
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
Those leaves are so beautiful! I miss living somewhere where the leaves change colors. For the most part the trees here turn yellow and then fall off pretty quickly.
Koryn @ High Heels & Healthy Alternatives says
Ahhh your last comment! I COMPLETELY agree – “And if we could juuuust completely bypass winter and head straight into spring, I’d be one happy camper.”
Let’s just skip winter – with the exception of Thanksgiving, which is also my birthday :-) – and I’d also be one VERY happy camper! Lol! And glad you’re now on the kale train! It’s one of my faves too!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
I can’t WAIT to see Gone Girl in theaters either! I just read the book a couple months ago, so I’m intrigued.
Beautiful fall photo!! I miss the changing colors we had in Utah. Have fun apple picking this weekend!
Emily @ Sweets and Beets says
Apple picking will be so fun! It’s one of my favorite parts of fall — I miss it now that I’m living in the south. And oh my gosh, I NEED that Band Aid stick. Have a great weekend!
Heather @ Housewife Glamour says
Hey, I’m totally with you on the bypassing Winter movement. How can we make it happen? Also, I LOVE putting fresh cucumber and lemon slices in my water. I constantly refill my glass every time I do it. Love the pics of Lucas! Happy Friday :)
char eats greens says
Cucumber and lemon in water sounds perfect!!! Too bad about the race, but it’s good you recognized that you can’t do it! Can I secretly hope they’ll extend the invitation to me one year?!?! haha
Happy weekend!!
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
I am looking forward to Gone Girl! The book was amazing. I have found Kale makes a great salad, but you have to allow it time to marinate. It’s really good served that way! Happy Friday.
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
Yay for lemon and cucumber in water too!
Michelle Kim says
Wow! Fall in NY is so beautiful!
In the San Francisco area, things are not exactly looking like fall just yet. Can’t wait!
Also… your son is SO ADORABLE and he’s grown a lot since the last time I checked the blog :D
lauren says
Thanks for the lemon/cucumber tip! I’m on my second big bottle of water :)
My 14mo is the same way with “phones”, it is too cute! I love when he says “Hi” in his little voice.
I cannot wait to see Gone Girl! We never go to the movies, but the husband really wants to see The Drop this weekend. Hopefully another date will happen soon!
Another plus to fresh Kale is that it lasts way longer than the prepped kind! And you can make Kale chips if you want. Idk why they’re called “chips”…but still, tasty!
Ruthie Hart says
I wish we had an apple orchard near us, I am jealous seeing everyone’s pictures on IG and seeing the yummy things they make! Ford uses everything as a phone too… my hubby is WAY too into Halloween and has lots of gorey decor and last night Ford was using a bloody hand as a phone….
Courtney says
OMG how funny is that?!? :)
Torry @ A World Without Wheat says
I love water with lemon – I have never tried it with cucumber but maybe I will have to try that!
Have a good weekend!
Danielle says
I just heard about that friction block and I’m dying to try it! Sounds like it could be a lifesaver for my feet!
haley @Cupcakes and Sunshine.com says
Barbecue and Kale sandwiches are my favorite! you will have to try it out. I went to Hawaii this summer and it was a big thing there. Now I can’t stop making them here!
Bri says
Just wanted to stop by and say these photos of Lucas are adoooooorable (as always!) He is just so cute “talking on the phone.” :-D Hope you enjoyed apple picking–one of my favorite fall activities! Have a great evening!
