House Finds, a New DIY Project + I Need Your Input!

By Courtney 30 Comments

My poor parents. We’re just continuing to take over just about every single room in the house with all of our “stuff.” It sure is a good thing they’re pretty good sports about it!

IMG_0864

It probably doesn’t help matters much when I wind up going out and doing a totally unexpected haul at Marshall’s… I told Jay yesterday that I was planning on running over there quick on my lunch hour just to do a little browsing. I felt confident in my claim of “browsing” because lately, anytime I go and look at anything, I tend to hold back from purchasing because I just can’t make up my mind.

Well…let’s just say I didn’t really have a problem making up my mind yesterday. #whoops

I swear, every isle I cruised down had something with my name on it. And there was no hesitation about it either. I saw it, and was like, “umm yes, I gotta have you,” and that was that. As to how much of it will wind up being later returned? That is always unknown. #buyersremorse

But I wound up getting a bunch of these vacuum seal containers (similar to these, also a great deal!)for about half price of what I’ve been seeing them for, and I’m excited to include them in our pantry.

IMG_0866

I plan on attempting to make them all pretty and everything with the chalk labels I recently purchased, too. So fancy.

IMG_0868

I also found a “potential” new rug for the foyer. I bought one recently at Kohl’s, but it was smaller than I would have wanted, so we’re gonna give this one a try.

IMG_0867

I also found a few “odds and ends” that I thought would look cute on top of our kitchen cabinets, but I’ll be honest…I really have no clue what I’m doing. And I’m a little leery of putting anything up there, really, because I am the worst when it comes to dusting, let alone going out of my way to dust things up high.

IMG_0869

So yeah, we’ll see there.

I also found some cute placemats, which have me thinking that perhaps I’ll like some pops of  yellow throughout our kitchen?

IMG_0870

I’m getting so ahead of myself here, it’s not even funny.

But seriously…I’m finding myself becoming totally consumed and overwhelmed with wanting to have everything done and decorated in the house right away, which I know is 110% unrealistic. For one, it’s going to take some time to get a feel for the space. And two, again, I’m really not great at the decorating thing. Send help, please.

On a slightly related note, however, I am TOTALLY stoked at our plans for our kitchen table. So we’ve been spending some time looking around at tables (like last weekend), and I’ve been browsing craigslist almost everyday, but we still haven’t really found “that” table. And every single time, I kept coming back to the look of a rustic farmhouse table. Sooo…we’re going to make our own…and it’s going to look semi-similar to this!

That table is actually one that was made by our cousins Mike and Brian (and you may remember the one at Brian and Mal’s house that I shared a while back) and I absolutely love it. Our plan? A darker stained top and an off-white color on the legs. We’ll do the same thing for the chairs too (which we’ll buy unfinished, because we’re not that ambitious) with darker seats and white legs/backs. I LOVE the look of the fabric chairs, but let’s be real…that’s just not realistic in our house.

And I’m not only blaming Lucas either. Winking smile

But speaking of kitchens and all that jazz…man, I seriously miss baking. And sort of cooking, but not totally…I love having my mom cooking meals for us right now. But baking? Yes. Like, in a bad way. And I cannot wait to have my own kitchen once again so I can put it to use right away. But it’s been so long since I’ve baked and shared a recipe with you guys…this blog always ebbs and flows with whatever happens to be going on in my life, and I know that things have been a bit all over the place lately, so thanks for sticking with me! That said, I really want to bring some recipes back, and I’d love your input.

What kind of recipes do you want to see on STSL once I’m back up and running with a kitchen?

Cookies? Cupcakes?  Any dessert with chocolate? Toddler Meals?  Quick weeknight dinners?

I figured, maybe if I start making notes now, then I’ll have some ideas at the ready for when we’re in the new place. Which, hopefully, is less than a week to goooo!

all of the above! You have the best cupcake recipes. But I also love your other baked goods. And now as a mom myself with a little guy who eats, I'm always looking for inspiration! Also, love the container idea!

The table is going to look amazing and be worth it when it's all said and done. I have buyers remorse too....but sometimes it really does take making the purchase and thinking it over to truly realize what you like/what will work/ what you simply bought spontaneously. Yellow=perfect pop for kitchens. Reminds me of th r cute shower curtain from Target. Personally, I love all your meals/baking, but definitely love seeing your kid/toddler meals simply bc I need all the suggestions in the world for Caroline. At 8 months, she is already getting picky. God only knows who she gets that from! ?

Hi Courtney! I enjoy everything about your blog. My grandson was born in the same month as Lucas so I always enjoy seeing toddler meals. I would also like to see quick dinner ideas. And anything else you choose to blog about! :)

When I moved in with Rick, we basically had a blank slate in terms of decorating our house. I had the same yellow/grey thoughts for our kitchen! Almost 3 years later and I still haven't painted it! It definitely takes some time to figure out how you want to decorate. Sometimes you find accent pieces (hello Joanna Gaines lanterns) and go from there!

I am the same when it comes to moving into a new place - I will do so much shopping for decorations without even getting into the space! I get super excited about the fresh and new beginning. I always love seeing your cookie recipes! Especially with football and tailgate season coming up, I loved seeing your cupcake recipe for the almond buttercream frosting that you did for the Jets games. Super cute! I feel like energy balls and granola bars are way overdone :) Do you ever experiment with gluten free flours?

Decorating can be so fun yet overwhelming. I have the personality that wants to do everything at once too (so fun when the cleaning bug hits!). I just started making cupcakes from scratch, so I am all for some new cupcake recipes!

Courtney all of your house stuff is adorable, I am loving your color scheme! A quick idea for the tops of your cabinets; I bought berry garland (found mine on Amazon, searched by color) in a white since my decor is neutral. It looks beautiful up there, adds the perfect amount pizzazz without looking cluttered. And the best part, I just take a long handled feather duster to it every so often; easy peasy! Best of luck in your beautiful new home! How exciting!

I am always on the look out for kid friendly low sugar baked goods. I love to bake treats for my 3 year old son and 14 month old daughter but too much sugar makes my son bounce off the walls, lol.

We are moving next week so I've been packing stuff up and recently climbed up on my kitchen counters to get the decor that was above the cabinets. Had I touched those things since putting them up there? No. Was everything covered in dust? Yep! Could you tell from the floor? Not at all. We don't have allergies in our house so dusting up high wasn't, well, high on my to-do list. Not with a toddler and a big dog - the floors were a MUCH higher priority!

Definitely take your time with decorating! I bought a condo three years ago and regret some purchases because they were made to fill a space or because I needed something. Or I just rushed "finishing" a room for the sake of it. I wish I spent a little more time looking or waiting (and maybe a little more money than I had at the time) for something really worth it. It'll come together!

You have at Marshalls is what I have at Target. I have to forbid myself to go there or else it'll get out of hand. As for the ideas: Quick weeknight dinners! = Always a struggle for me :D

I've made a few dining room tables for myself (usually sell them when I decide I want something new) and if you're going to go down that road I definitely recommend investing in the Kreg tool. It was a life changer and is good for so many different things. It is probably one of my most used tools.
