Want to know how to curl your hair with a straightener? Keep reading for a video tutorial!
It’s only taken me about a million months, but I have finally been able to put together a video tutorial on how I curl my hair with a straightener!
Thank goodness for an extra day off from work and a child who takes great naps.
So it’s been quite a while since I broke out the ol’ “vlog” status here on the blog, but I really could not figure out how to explain what I do though pictures, so it’s all in a video for ya.
Check it out!
And just in case you’re interested, here’s a list of some of the hair products I use and love:
Hair Straightener (shown in above photo and in video)
Redken Fashion Waves 07 Texturizing Sea Spray
Kenra Thermal Styling Spray No. 19
So what do you think – something you could give a try?
brynn says
Yay for the video! You’re so darn cute and have gorgeous, shiny hair! I curl my hair in a similar way and my girlfriends are always asking how I get my curls. And I totally agree, a good straightener is a must.
Courtney says
Haha, thanks Brynn!
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
I have tried this so many times–it has never worked. And then my stylist did it once to show m, and it worked perfectly! BAH
Linz @ Itz Linz says
eek you make it look so easy! i’ve tried a couple times and my hair ends up having lots of kinks lol
Courtney says
I’ve noticed that the kinks happen for me when it doesn’t glide down the hair smooth. If it gets stuck (i.e., too much product buildup for me), then the kinks form. It’s also important to make sure that the straightener has somewhat or a round barrel, rather than the ones that are wide and flat (if that makes sense, haha?!)
Sarah @ Sarah Sincerely says
I’ve fallen in love with a curling wand recently. I never could figure out just how to curl my hair with a straightener without making it look all kinky. I’m definitely going to have to give it a try, now! Thanks for putting this together!
Courtney says
Now a curling wand is something that I feel like I could never figure out!! I keep envisioning burned fingers… :)
Stacie @ SimplySouthernStacie says
You did a great job with the video, Courtney! I tried curling my hair with a straightener in the past without much luck, so I will have to try it again alongside your video and hope for better luck!
Courtney says
Thanks, Stacie! Let me know if it works out for you! :)
Kim @FITsique says
Awesome, I’ve always wondered how people do this with a straightener! I pretty much just learned how to curl my hair with a curling iron so this will be my next step. Haha 27 years and here I am learning how to do my hair finally!
Courtney says
Hahaha, hey, I’m 31 and just started doing it within the past year or so ;)
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
Yeah, there’s no way I would be able to do this – ha! I was super impressed on our girls’ weekend (um, let’s have another one!) that you could do this.
Courtney says
Hahaha, I did this on our trip?? I feel like I barely did anything with my hair that weekend lol
Bri says
Your gorgeous hair makes me miss my long locks! Such a great tutorial, thanks!! Will save it once this pixie thing grows out someday :)
Britt@MyOwnBalance says
The problem with my hair is that it never stays curly!!
Courtney says
ME TOO! But I’m telling you, this is the only thing that works to keep a curl in my hair! :)
Monica says
You are super adorable! You did a great job on the video, and your hair is gorgeous… which product makes it so shiny?
Courtney says
Thanks, Monica! I actually don’t use anything… :) But I feel like it always looks a little nicer/shinier for a while after it’s been colored!
Mama Pat says
Nice job!! : )
Courtney says
Thanks Mom! :)
Nicole W says
I just tried it this morning and it worked great!!! I’ve tried so many times, and your video was such a big help! Wish I knew how easy this was years ago!!!!
Courtney says
YAYYYY!!! That’s what I was hoping to hear soon! So glad you tried it and it worked! :)
Mabel @ Ma Bella Vita says
Love the video and would have loved it more years ago but I stopped using strengtheners long, long ago. My hair is not very thick so I felt the iron was damaging my hair. I know there are ways around it and once in a while it doesn’t hurt :)
Shayla says
I have that exact same straightener. LOL. I’ve never tried curling with it but I definitely will soon! Thanks!
Brittany (Healthy Slice of Life) says
I’m sitting over here with some serious hair envy right now- you have gorgeous hair!! Mine is a wavy crazy mess but maybe I ought to try every so often and see what I can make it do… what a novel concept ;)
Nicole says
thanks for the video!! Do you find that your hair looks better curled when it’s cut with layers? I’ve been wanting to get some layers. How would I explain to my stylist how to cut my hair like yours? Just long layers?
Courtney says
Yes! Definitely layers! I used to just get “long layers,” but opted for some shorter ones this time as well, which really make a difference :)
cait @pieceofcait says
your hair always looks gorgeous! thanks for the video :)
Courtney says
Aww, thank you Cait!
Jen says
Loved the video. But, more importantly, at the end it came up with all the other videos. I did not know you were the “waffley wedded wife” video!!!! That is too funny, I’ve been reading your blog for over a year now and I definitely saw that video years ago!!!! What a coincidence!!! Love it! “It’s such a small world”!! :)
Jen says
sorry…i clearly looked at the wrong video. Not you. Oops!!!
Courtney says
HAHA! Okay I’m glad you said that because I was super confused and was like, wait, I don’t think that was me?!? :)
Katie says
As I said, love the video and you are too adorable! Your hair always looks gorgeous! I do love curling mine to make it have more volume, which I really don’t have too much of an issue with in the first place. #helloigotaprettyawesomefro
Mandy - Toneupgirl says
Thank you for the tutorial. BTW – I have the same shirt you’re wearing!! Isn’t it soooooo comfy!
Courtney says
OMG yes! I have it in 2 colors..looooove!
Mandy - Toneupgirl says
Wish I could delete my comment because I didn’t mean to add “recently posted”.
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine says
Can you just come over and do this for me? ;) Hahaha!
Carrie (This Fit Chick) says
you are a rock star!!! wish me luck… but first I need to get all those sprays to make this happen the right way!
Nancy says
Omg yay a video from you! I loved it! My hair always looks fantastic on the left side, but when it comes to doing my hair on the right side – it looks reeeeally wonky and squirrely. I do a different technique than you, maybe I should try it your way next.
Patty @ Reach Your PeaK says
I have tried this many times and just cannot get the hang of it lol. So for now I have been using a curling wand. I’ll have to learn how to do this for good!
Nikki says
Thanks so much for sharing!! I’ve been trying to figure out how to curl my hair with a straightener forever! I can’t wait to get home and give it a try :)
Julie F says
Looks great. I’m going to have to give it a shot. My hair does not hold a curl either. At all. It’s usually gone within the hour. Even if I use products. I’ve given up
Sarah @ Sweet Miles says
Ok, kid you not, I’d always wondered how people curled their hair with straighteners!!! You are too. cute.
Jess says
Great video! I can’t wait to try this!
Ps..where did you get that shirt? It looks so comfy!
Courtney says
Thanks Jess! It’s actually from Target – I have it in 2 colors and looooove it!
Jess says
Ah, thank you!!! I will have to be on the lookout for it. I need more comfy shirts that aren’t old college sweatshirts! Haha.
Shayla says
Whoa that’s crazy…there’s another Shayla that reads your blog lol! I had to comment here so you know that wasn’t me haha. Anyway, awesome tutorial!! I curl my hair a different way with the straightener but it doesn’t hold well so I’m definitely trying that :) And girl, not only are you beautiful, but you have the most gorgeous shiny hair ever. What kind/color of highlights are those? I stopped getting highlights years ago and when I did they were always blonde, but I love how yours are a caramel color. Can your mom fly here to do mine?? ;) Anyway, you are gorgeous girly and I’ll respond to your text soon! xoxo
purelytwins says
Thank you for this!! Now how can we get you to come down and do our hair ;) xoxo
Alison @ Anchor in the Stratosphere says
Your hair looks fabulous! I’ve tried this so many times and just can’t get it to consistently work (and without it taking 100 hours). I’m willing to give it another try with your video though, here’s hoping!
Linda says
I need to try to curl my hair again. The one time I did it my hair looked terrible and yours looks adorable!
BloodCub says
use straightener is so hurt to the hair, i don’t use it now.
