How To Get the Most Out Of Your Treadmill

By Courtney 22 Comments

Those of you who know me or those of you who have been reading the blog for a few years now probably already know that when it comes to running, I ALWAYS prefer to run a treadmill vs. running outside. I know that pretty much puts me in the minority (from what I’ve heard from many of you!), but I just really like the treadmill (and I have a ton of treadmill workouts you guys can check out, too!) and there are so many treadmill benefits.

We recently plugged ours back in down in the basement and we’ve been using it here and there as I get back into the whole fitness routine thing. I also broke out my Fitbit Charge and have started using that again, too, to track my daily steps. It’s amazing how easy it is to hit 10,000 steps when you’re home with a toddler and infant all day!

Back to the treadmill though. I get it…it’s not always the most popular choice (that’s why so many people call it the dreadmill, not the treadmill, right?).

But the right approach can help you transform your treadmill into a workout that builds strength and improves performance. You can create hills on a treadmill. You can tweak your form on a treadmill. Skip the handrails and incorporate some interval approaches to your treadmill time. Go ahead and mix things up!

Want more treadmill tips? Try this graphic for help, which I recently came across from from Fix.com!

(FYI: This is not a sponsored post in any way – I just wanted to share the graphic because I found it helpful and interesting!)

So let’s hear it…do you enjoy the treadmill??

I always prefer to run outside, but I do love a treadmill too! I trained a lot for my first half marathon on a treadmill- 10 milers on a treadmill = lots of shows to keep me distracted ;)

My parents have a treadmill which they let me use. I'm very grateful because we have at least 6 months of snow here. I'm not adventurous enough to spend hours in the snow, ice, and cold when I can be warm inside.

I've never been a big treadmill runner, but my husband recently got me one off of Craigslist (it's free and outdated, but it works!) so I'm excited to try out these workouts. Plus it's been so hot this summer and our winters can be brutal so it'll be great not to have those excuses anymore!

I used to love the treadmill when I was in college. I live in VA now, and the trails and outdoor running are beautiful so I've since been converted. We'll see in the winter months though. I'm sure my treadmill runs will make a reappearance. ;) I'll have to use some of your workouts!

I used to run on a treadmill pretty regularly years ago, but since I started running long distance the past 6 years, I've come to love my outdoor running along the Hudson in NYC SO MUCH that the thought of having to resort to the treadmill seriously upsets me. BUT I will still use it when the weather is awful or for a quick speed workout now and then. The point is to get the runs and cardio in howsoever works for someone, so I'm glad you enjoy it and definitely think it's valuable!

Do you have any pointers as to purchasing a treadmill? Manual vs electric, etc. I'm looking into purchasing one and I'm overwhelmed by the different models and the price ranges, WOW! I've seen some at $100 up to over $1,000 (way over my price range).

I love to run outside, but I have a feeling a lot of my Chicago winter running will be on a treadmill unless it's another mild one! I love this infographic - thanks for sharing.

A very informative and helpful infographic! Thanks for sharing! I always prefer going treadmill during winters. It helps me to stay physically fit and healthy despite my urge to just lie down and do nothing during cold weathers.

I'll take a treadmill over a run outside during Summer for sure! Especially if I can watch an episode of Friends while I'm at it! Gonna have to check out Sears drive through - what a GREAT concept.

Treadmills is very useful in the coronary artery blockages, diagnosis of heart disease, and other cardiac issues. Treadmill workout will improve blood circulation in the body and help to lower blood pressure by strengthening the heart.

When I had regular access to a treadmill, I preferred it to running outside (unless I was doing a trail run) because I could watch a show and better regulate my speed while doing it. It also gave the huge benefit of being a few minutes away from my (then) baby, rather than being a few miles away! Lena

Treadmill workouts are some of the most challenging, efficient, and calorie-burning routines around. But you should mix up your speed and add some floor exercises or stretching into your routine.

Add Weight. Adding weight forces the body to work harder and increases the amount of calories burned, which is why heavy people tend to burn more calories than lighter people when they exercise. Ecotric Coupon Code
