I feel like things have been somewhat heavy around here (and, well, everywhere) these days, so I thought it would be fun to lighten it up a bit and share our latest home renovation project…our new fireplace makeover!
For well over a year, I’ve had a vision in my head about how I wanted our fireplace to look. When we first built our home (about 4-1/2 years ago!), I had made a last minute switch to our tile choice, and wound up going with this very neutral color. Very boring.
Jay hated it, but for a brief time, I liked it. Then, after said brief time was up, I couldn’t stand it anymore. Hindsight is 20/20, right?
Then came the era of my favorite duo, Chip and Joanna Gaines, and I fell head over heels for the shiplap look. I knew that I eventually wanted our fireplace to have something similar, but I couldn’t quite figure out how I wanted the rest of the mantle and surround to look.
After a few iterations of sketches by Jay, we both eventually agreed upon the look we were going for…and then the fun began!
Jay actually demoed the existing fireplace quite a few weeks back, so we were left with a rather naked looking wall. At that point, we were still carrying on with our normal daily lives, so there wasn’t as much time to devote to the project.
Then once we were quarantined, we suddenly had a little more time on our hands. ; )
Jay put a ton of time and effort into this one – especially since he even built the entire mantle piece from scratch. And when all was said and done, the whole thing came to life exactly as I had pictured it. We are SO thrilled with how it turned out!
*For my local friends, we got all of our tile from Albany Marble Inc.. If you’re in need of something, definitely go see my buddy, Frank. He’s great!
I’ll tell ya. This husband of mine is quite handy to have around (and he always likes to remind me of it, too, haha). This is just another awesome project of his to add to the list of many that have happened over the years. Here’s a look at some I’ve shared, that you may or may not remember…

Yeah, I think it’s safe to say I’ll be keeping this guy around. AND, lucky for him, I’ve already got a new project in mind for him.
He loves me so much.

Wow, the fireplace looks absolutely incredible! Your husband did an excellent job! Also, your farmhouse table is gorgeous and the chalkboard and basement; definitely made me smile this morning!

Such a lucky girl! My man installed a new front door to our house! But it’s a little different because i have to push the door out to open it and it hits whoever is in front!

All I can say is lucky you. My husband used to do handy work and then when he got older he decided that we needed to hire it done and he did such good work.
Brigid says
Your husband is seriously talented! It looks beautiful. Hope you are all staying healthy.
Laura says
I’m jealous of Jay’s abilities! He’s very talented. It looks so great!!

I really love this. You did a great job, and it looks professional. I’m wondering, how tall are your ceilings and how tall is your mantle now? I’ve thought about doing something similar for a long time, but I’m worried my ceilings are too low. Thanks!
Courtney says
Thank you! We have 9 foot ceilings and I believe the mantle goes up about 4.5-5 feet from the floor.

I love it – question – when you mounted the tv – where do you run the cable box or/dvd player or any of that type of stuff. I would like to mount ours but don’t know where I would go with all the stuff underneath it.
Courtney says
Thanks, Shannon! My husband ran all of those lines behind the wall and we have all of those boxes either in or on the cabinet to the left of the fireplace
Pamela says
What type of brick did you use? Or is that faux? Love the colors!
Jennifer says
Looks beautiful! Did you glue the new brick on the old marble/tile fireplace or did you totally remove it?
Courtney says
Totally removed it!
Cindie says
What was your process to remove the tile. We have that same tile and I hate it!
Jamie says
The fireplace looks beautiful! The color of the tiles is exactly what I’m looking for. Do you know the brand and name of the tiles you used?
Tami says
What is the paint color you used on the fireplace wall? Love how it all looks together!
Melinda says
Hi! I was wondering the name of the tile you purchased for the inset of the fireplace. Looking for a rock but not so rustic & I love the color of the grays ‘ whites
Rhonda says
I’d love to know the tile you used also. Looking to redo my fireplace. Can you provide the name and kind of tile or stone?
Concetta says
Beautiful work ..What size is the tv over the fireplace?
Robert Thompson says
Hi, love the fireplace! Name of tile please?
Melody Canterberry says
Hi! I love what your hubs did with your fireplace! Our “before” looks nearly the same as yours. I have some questions, if you don’t mind.
1. Did you have to have someone come in and move the fireplace forward, or did you leave as-is?
2. It looks like the hearth tile (floor) has been painted. What paint did you use, and how is it holding up?
3. Did you use actual shiplap above the mantle, or is it tongue- and -groove, or something else entirely?
Thanks for your help!
Melody Canterberry says
Sorry, by “fireplace forward”, i mean the gas insert, of course.
Genelle Pretty says
Hello! Your new fireplace is beautiful! The planning and hard work paid off big time :) I am curious what you did for the floor tiles. Were those demo-ed and replaced too? Thank you!
Sara says
Can you tell me where you purchased the mantel?

What once seemed like a good choice can eventually feel outdated or uninspired. But it’s all part of the journey of making a house truly feel like home.
