This Caramelized Onion Dip is the perfect addition to your next appetizer spread. Serve it up with your favorite crackers, pita chips, or bread and your guests are sure to go wild for it!
****************
I realized the other day that there has been a recipe I’ve been meaning to share on this blog for almost THREE YEARS now. How it has taken me so long to actually share it is beyond me, because it has totally become one of our “must make” recipes for whenever we’re entertaining.
So with Thanksgiving and the holidays right around the corner, I had to share the details on this dip because it’s such a crowd-pleaser and an awesome appetizer to add to your spread!
Depending on what we have around the house, we’ll typically either serve the dip with some crackers and/or pita chips…
Or if we want something a little heartier, we’ll serve it up with a beer bread (the beer bread mixes from Pampered Chef are SO good, and all you have to add is a bottle of your favorite beer!).
Either way you choose, you really can’t go wrong!
You can also choose to make it lighter by going with light mayo/sour cream/cream cheese!
Caramelized Onion Dip
Ingredients
- 1-2 teaspoons canola oil
- 3 cups chopped red onions
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons tub-style cream cheese
- 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon dried minced onion
- 3/4 teaspoon reduced-sodium soy sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Heat oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in the onions, lower heat to medium, and continue to cook for 10 minutes, stirring often.
- Stir in the brown sugar and continue to cook for another 7-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are a deep, golden color. Remove from heat.
- In a medium bowl, mix the cream cheese and mayo until smooth. Add the sour cream and remaining ingredients, as well as the cooked onions and mix until combined.
- Serve immediately or refrigerate for 30 minutes to let all of the flavors combine. Serve with your favorite chips, crackers, or bread. Enjoy!
Let me know if you guys give it a try – I promise, you’re going to love it! <3

Pinning this right now, Courtney!! This looks so good! We used to (like waaaay long ago) buy the onion dip in a jar that Lays makes, that’s like in the chip aisle, ha! But a homemade version is clearly WAY better! I’ve never even thought to try and make it!

This looks so good! It’s hard to go wrong with anything that has carmelized onions in it. This might be a dumb question, but what is tub style cream cheese? Cream cheese that comes in a tub instead of a block wrapped in foil and cardboard? Maybe you have a kind of cream cheese in the US that we don’t have here in Canada.
