Alright, it’s time to get real around these parts. I’ve got lots to chat about, but before I get to anything, I just had to share last night’s dinner with you.
It was way too good to go unnoticed. I’m even tempted to call it epic; and for me to say that something is epic really tells you something…seeing as though I usually can’t stand the word. But I think you’ll see why.
Veggies haven’t really been at the top of my “must have” list for the past couple of days, so when I wound up with a craving yesterday afternoon, I figured we should go for it. When I checked in the freezer to see what we had on hand, I found chicken and I found shrimp. It was a total toss up…so I went with both!
Jay took care of grilling the chicken while I sautéed the shrimp and put together the salads, which included lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, corn, fresh sugar snap peas, leftover sweet potatoes, feta cheese, grilled chicken, and sautéed shrimp.
Like I said, epic. And now you won’t hear me say that word for a long, LONG time.
*****
So now…let’s talk a little bit about that whole nutrition plan that I’ve been on.
In case you’re new to these parts (hello to all of my new readers I’ve been noticing!) or you just need a quick refresher, here’s what went down with the plan…
Back in January, I made the decision to start a customized nutrition plan in an attempt to get me back on track with healthy eating and try to combat my ever-growing lust for sweets. I also mentioned that if I happened to drop a few pounds in the process, I’d be totally cool with it – even though numbers aren’t my thing.
I also knew at that time that in about six weeks, I’d be traveling to Mexico. I’m not going to lie and tell you that vanity did not factor into my decision to start the plan, because it definitely did. I wanted to look good and I wanted to feel good.
I was pumped about this nutrition plan from the beginning because it wasn’t that much different from my usual meals, and still gave me plenty of healthy, delicious options to choose from.
Within two weeks of the plan, I was already noticing some majorly awesome stuff happening. I felt great, my pants were getting looser, I was eating ALL the time, and perhaps the best side effect…my cravings for sweets had dropped significantly.
By the time I hit the five week mark, I was still making progress that I was extremely happy with, despite the fact that there were numerous celebrations that had taken place in the weeks leading up to that.
Birthday girl was not about to give up her fro-yo or giant birthday margarita!
By week six, we were on our way to Mexico! I felt fantastic and confident, and I told myself that I was just going to enjoy my vacation. I wasn’t going to worry about a nutrition plan, or the calories in my fruity drinks and decadent breakfast crepes.
So that’s exactly what I did. I enjoyed my vacation to the max. I ate a lot of good food, had a lot of delicious poolside drinks, and still even managed to get some healthy meals in there too.
But one of the things about all-inclusive resorts that spells trouble for me is the fact that it’s a never-ending supply. Food and drinks everywhere you turn, any time of day. I definitely ate a lot more than my body is used to while I was down there, and while I didn’t necessarily feel like I was stuffing myself, my body had quickly gotten itself adjusted to its new eating habits by the time we arrived back home.
Since we’ve been home (it’s now been about a month) things have been…tough. I get cravings for not-so-healthy food quite often. I’ve also found myself slowly gravitating away from the layout of my initial plan, often missing/skipping snacks during the day, or choosing ones that are not quite satiating enough.
Then, because I wasn’t eating enough during the day, the hunger (and the habit) of eating after dinner came back…full force.
At first, it started off with healthier snacks…things like a VitaTop or a sliced apple with some honey cinnamon peanut butter.
But then, I got urges to bake…and I ate way too much of my baked goods.
And then I got that toffee in the mail and couldn’t keep my hands out of the box.
And then I bought ice cream at the grocery store one week…and Jay and I finished it off in about four days.
And then I found myself going out for a massive mid-afternoon fro-yo fix.
My sweet tooth has come back with a vengeance.
It’s something I’ve thought about bringing up on here for the past couple of weeks but I kept putting it off. Then, I received a question from a reader…
“I have a question for you about your diet…after your vacation, did you feel like you gained weight or like your old cravings came back at all? If so, how have you handled it? “
At first, my initial reaction was, “Ouch. Apparently my St. Patty’s Day pictures were not so flattering?” But in all honesty, it’s a valid question that deserves a valid answer.
I’ll tell you that I have not once stepped on the scale since I’ve returned from Mexico, nor do I intend to. Scales and I just don’t really get along, but I will say that all of my clothes are still fitting just fine.
Do I feel like I gained a little bit of weight back? Maybe. Who knows? But more than that, I’ve come to a very honest realization: my love for sweets is something that I’m going to have to actively deal with forever. And that’s because bad habits are hard to break.
It’s amazing, isn’t it? How we can work SO HARD at changing a bad habit, and gradually, we start to see success. But the second we fall off the bandwagon, it’s as if someone is ready and waiting to reel us in at full speed. I’ll be honest, it was not easy for me to break away from sweets six weeks ago…but it sure was easy to dive headfirst right back into them.
So how am I handling it? Well, up until this point, I’ve been handling it by indulging in it like its my job, coming up with excuses left and right. But now? It’s about time for me to re-evaluate my nutrition as a whole.
I know I need to start eating more snacks again throughout the day. I need to start making myself more filling lunches, too. I also need to stop buying the darn half gallons of ice cream that go on sale to keep in the house; now that it’s getting warmer, ice cream and fro-yo will be a treat to be enjoyed occasionally, outside of the house. Aaaand I need to keep the baking to a minimum (or just send it off to work with Jay immediately). These are all things that I have found set me up for failure.
And I don’t want to fail. I don’t want to feel crappy going to bed at night. I want to get back to that place I was at a month ago. When someone asks me how I’m feeling, I want to be able to tell them with 100% certainty that I feel GREAT.
So, that’s my “new plan on the plan.” Wish me luck.
Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries says
We’re in the same place, Courtney! While I wasn’t following a nutrition plan like you, I was at a really good place not too long ago. Then – what happens? I feel *so* good that I think “Oh, what’s one trip to Wendy’s? I’m at my happy weight.” I relate it to someone taking medication for a mental health issue – so many times, people STOP taking the meds once they finally feel GOOD. And, that’s what I did with my eating habits. And yes, I had fro-yo last night :)
Deanna says
Thanks for sharing your analogy of mental issue medications. I know someone who does this and it drives me nuts she won’t take care of herself. I guess the same goes for me!
Courtney says
I agree, great analogy Colleen!
sherri says
You have a great attitude towards food Courtney. You don’t beat yourself up about indulging a little and then just get back on track. Besides…life’s WAY too short not to enjoy some sweets now and then!
Tina @ Best Body Fitness says
I go through the same phases every now and again when old habits of craving and giving in to sweets more than necessary come back with a vengeance. It’s tough when you get back into the habits again to reset them. I just always remember and focus on how much better I feel. :)
Alyssa @ fit and fun in third says
Thanks for being do honest! It always takes me time to get back into the swing of things after a vacation…. Coming home from my honeymoon was the worstttt! My sweets cravings were at an all time high. It actually took a few months to get goin again, but now that I do I feel great! Good luck! :)
Courtney says
I remember feeling the SAME way after my honeymoon. Glad to hear you’re back to feeling great!
Amanda says
I love how honest you are in this post! A lot of times people assume healthy living bloggers like you are p e r f e c t. Everyone has their trouble areas and I’m with you on this one! However, I have found a healthy relationship with sweets by allowing myself at least one thing small everyday….otherwise I will just binge on cheesecake and pies and ice cream haha! But I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your honesty and life is too short to not enjoy the yummy things every once in awhile!!
Emily says
I am a daily reader of your blog. I don’t know if i’ve ever posted though. (more of a lurker maybe? haha :) ) This post totally resonated with me though and I just felt as if I had to leave a comment. I have the exact same issues when it comes to sweets. I LOVE to bake, and I love trying and sharing new recipes, but it almost feels as though I’m setting myself up to fail, because I will undoubtly overdo it EVERY time. It is a battle for me, and I just wanted to say how much I appreciated hearing it from you. It is hard to end a day feeling unsuccessful in the goals I had set for myself, but it is also so hard to stay away from the ice cream! haha. Good luck, and thank you!
Courtney says
Thanks so much for commenting, Emily! It’s so nice to hear from readers (or lurkers, haha!)
Lauren says
It’s amazing how easy this can happen but you’re definitely not alone. I think it all comes out with different points in our lives. It’s totally normal!!! Hang in there girl, I could never give up my fro-yo either, but maybe just a few extra chocolate chips. :) All about compromise right? ;)
Courtney says
Exactly! Compromise and balance :)
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
it’s pretty amazing that for different reasons, our same nutrition plan ended up the same way. I “second” EVERYTHING you just said, only my downfall started with surgery. I’ve been unable to work out, and comfort food has been my jam. For the most part, I’ve been good throughout the day, but nighttime has called for many italian/mexican/fries and sandwich dinners and plenty of fro-yo and sweets.
I have retired the scale for the time being. in my opinion, numbers shouldn’t even exist.
TIME TO REEVALUATE, ALYSSA. I was about to do a post a lot like this one, but you took the words right out of my mouth. maybe I’ll just link back here and say “what she said.” :)
P.S. your st. pattys pictures did NOT look unflattering. ;)
Courtney says
Hahaha…I’ve actually been meaning to text you about this, wondering how you were doing with the whole thing. Glad to hear I’m not the only one!
P.S. – Thanks, lady. ;)
Tegan @ Style Chic says
Hi Courtney – Have been reading your blog for a while and thought it was about time I said Hello! Your post rings so true with me and my eating habits – HELLO killer sweet tooth! Good luck getting back on track, think its about time I did too
xx tegan
Courtney says
Thanks, Tegan!
And HELLO back! ;)
Coco says
I really appreciate the honesty of this post. However, I think the “healthy living” blog community creates sort of a breeding grounds for high (sometimes unrealistic) expectations and competitiveness. I think you need to eat what’s best for you, and work out at the pace that is best for you. It seems like you realize this, which is great.
I just sometimes have a hard time with blogs of this nature in general, because “dessert” isn’t a square of dark chocolate–it’s a bowl of ice cream (in my opinion, anyway). I think we sometimes get so caught up in what other bloggers are doing that we forget to sit down and figure out what works for us.
Bravo, Courtney, for being real. I love your blog.
Courtney says
Hahaha, I totally agree. A square of dark chocolate will definitely not do it for me.
Robin @ The Balanced Life says
Great perspective Courtney! Love when I see bloggers being open, honest & real. Keep it up :)
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers says
Once you fall of the wagon, it’s hard to get back on it. The only thing motivating me right now is bikini season around the corner. Slowly but surely, I’m getting back in the swing of things, and I’m sure you will too.
Lauren says
Thank you for an awesome post :) You are on the HLBs I really admire becaue you seem to strike a great balance and always look great, whether or not you personally feel at the top of your game.
And I agree with Alyssa…your St Patrick’s Day pics were not unflattering at all! I was actually thinking when I saw them that you must still be following the nutrition plan closely!
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
I’m with you on the keeping ice cream in the house. I got some Ben & Jerry froyo yesterday because it was on sale. I polished off half the pint in a day. It was tasty–but probably not too good for me, lol.
Jana @ Newly Wife Healthy Life says
I can totally relate to this Courtney! I ate so well and felt so good before my wedding. Then when I went on my honeymoon to an all inclusive and ate all the sweets, decadent meals, and fruity drinks I wanted, I had a really hard time breaking that trend when I got back home. In fact, it’s been over 5 months later and I am still working on it! I agree that dealing with my sweet tooth is definitely something I too have to handle the rest of my life.
Alyssa says
I have an awful sweet tooth as well!! I always need to have something sweet after dinner, its a must!!! I always have 0% yogurt with a table spoon of almond butter and two tablespoons of trail mix mixed into it before popping it in the freezer for a half hour!! That way I get my sweet fix after dinner, yet it is still kind of healthy =). I do not think I could ever give up sweets!!!
Courtney says
Oooo, that sounds pretty good with the mix-ins! I may have to try that :)
Jessie @RunforFroYo says
Great Post! I have a trip to Mexico in June and and already kind of stressing about how to deal with the all inclusive, never ending supply of food. I want to enjoy my vacation and not worry about stupid little calories, but I also don’t want all my hard work to go down the drain! You look amazing, but it’s great that you want to feel your best!!!
Becca says
I love you blog because it is so honest! I totally understand where you are coming from. A while back I was lucky enough to train at Jim White fitness studios. I had a fantastic trainer who kicked my butt every single time. I had some weight that I want to lose and one of the biggest things I was told that was I would need to
Change my diet. Without doing this I was wasting my time. Every week I had to fill out a food log, breakfast, snacks, lunch, dinner.. Basically anything I ate throughout the day. I HATED doing this, not because it was hard or time consuming but because it put into reality how bad I caved when it came to sweets. Some times I though about lying but knew I was only cheating myself. Every week I felt so dumb handing over my chart trying to figure out why I was so weak when it came to my diet.
Even though I wanted to lose the weight more than anything I just sabotaged it by eating sweets. I truly busted my butt in the gym, worked out as hard as possible but the sweet cravings never went away. Like you I think it is something I will always struggle with. It seems as it would be so easy to just stop but it is not at all.
Kelsey says
Thanks for being so honest!! Baking totally sets me up for diet failure…it is so hard to give up though, because I really love trying new recipes and playing around in the kitchen! Hang in there though–I love the quote about waking up each day is your chance to start over! :)
Lindsay @ The Lean Green Bean says
just keep reminding yourself that yourself that you were able to limit those cravings in the past so you can definitely do it again! and for what it’s worth, i though you looked fantastic in your st. patty’s photos :) good luck girl!
Minda says
You rock sister! I love your honesty. Good luck on this journey Courtney-you got this :)
Lilly says
I LOVEd this post. I currently had been over-indulging a little too much and I was just thinking that I need to re-evaluate as well. It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who has cycles like this. Thanks!
Janae Wise says
Courtney: I think you’re preaching to the choir. I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t go through this cycle.
Currently, I’m trying to figure out the balance of what to eat. I do well with extremes (completely cutting out sweets) for awhile, but then it always comes back to bite me. Right now, like you, I’m trying to strike a balance, which is the most challenging part.
I love vita-tops, but since I went GF I haven’t had any. Wonder if they do GF vita-tops?
Erica says
Thank you for this post. I’ve never commented before but have been a regular reader here for the past few months. Like all of your blogging, I appreciate how honest and candid you are about your own exercise and eating experiences. For the record, I think you look fabulous as always and am continually inspired by your outlook on everything! As another self-proclaimed sweet-toother :) I totally get how hard it is not to give in and think it’s ok in moderation…the line between that and overdoing it, however, is sometimes hard to distinguish! Especially when your fav treats are staring you down. Keep it up and thank you again!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
I feel like I’m in a similar spot to you. I’ve been WANTING to eat more (hence my new pants and 8 pound weight gain) but I haven’t wanted to just fill up on crap that makes me feel like… crap. Yes, treats are fine and all – I have no problem eating cookies/treats, but when I eat too much all that sugar makes me feel blah.
Elizabeth @ Chocolate Drops and Pearls says
Good luck! I have a huge sweet tooth too and I’ve found that if i limit myself to an after dinner treat it helps with the cravings. If I start with chocolate early on in the day I will want to eat it all day but if I wait until dinner sometimes I don’t even want it at all!
Lauren @ Call Me Mrs. Rapp says
I can sooo relate to this post. About a month ago I was out of town for work for a week. It totally messed with my fitness and eating routines, and I’ve found it hard to bounce back, especially after getting sick – twice – upon my return home. I’m with you though! Working hard to get back on track. Cheers!
Lindsay @ In Sweetness and In Health says
I love your honesty about all of this Courtney! I too am a person that struggles with a massive, massive sweet tooth. And I too find that it is so easy to fall off the bandwagon and just start eating them all the time again! Good luck with your new plan…I think you will totally be able to do it. I should probably do something similar. I guess it’s just important to remember that we’re doing it to feel good and healthy!
Shannon says
I have a huge sweet tooth!! You are doing the right thing by snacking throughout the day on healthy options, it’s the only way I can help decrease that urge for sweets!
Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy says
I really like your attitude, and I feel that all of us can relate. We all have our ups and downs, and it just takes some work to get back to a good place!
Steph @ StephSnacks says
Courtney I’m cheering you on! I know how it feels to battle a sweet tooth — some people laugh because it sounds so silly, but honestly, I have an over-whelming sweet tooth, also, in which I find myself having froyo sometimes twice a week (which doesn’t so sound bad but it’s not exactly an occasional treat at that point). Sometimes I try to be more ‘strict’ with myself, but other times it’s tough. It’s a balancing act like everything else. I know you can do it!
Emily H says
This post spoke to me in so many ways! Of all the blogs I read I come back to yours daily because you keep it real, and I can completely relate to your eating habits. I eat the same way you do – healthy, with splurges, but I am noticing more and more that the ice cream sandwich after dinner has become a nightly habit, and I know that I’m hooked and it is something I really need to make a conscious decision to cut back on. I love how you said it is the time of the year to enjoy ice cream and fro-yo, but outside of the house, and I think that is a new concept I need to start implementing. Thanks for being relateable!
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles says
Great post! I have myself a MAJOR sweet tooth too, it always has to be reigned back in and it will be something I always have to work at. It’s just who I am, a love of sweet. It runs in the family! ;) …. On a completelpely different note, I’m sure that that comment from the reader didn’t think your St. Patrick’s day pics were not flattering, silly girl. Just sayin. :) Ooooh, and that dinner last night = glorious! Happy Friday!
Courtney says
Haha, thanks Julie! :)
Brittany (Healthy Slice of Life) says
I can totally relate, but with exercise. I get into a great rhythm of working out 5 days a week, then I get sick and take a couple days off and it’s SO hard for me to get rolling with it again. Usually I must force myself, but then once I do, the feel-good feeling propels me forward again. But those off days are SO tough to get going after sometimes.
Courtney says
I totally agree with you, Brittany! If I take a few days off from exercise, it’s definitely a lot harder to get back into a routine.
Kristin says
Courtney–what a GREAT post!! Thank you for being so REAL and posting this. I think this is something we all struggle with at times and it is nice to know we are not alone….Darn that Sweet Tooth! :-) Love reading your blog everyday.
Yaara says
Hey Courtney!
First of all–you look very slim and pretty! I agree with the comments above–in those St. Paddy’s day pics–you still look very slim. Don’t be so hard on yourself! I also could never give up fro-yo. I need to have a lil something sweet after dinner. I feel really unsatisfied otherwise. Thank you for being so honest and real. What I like so much about your blog is that you show you are human. What I also like about you is that you are damn determined. In the past when you have committed yourself to challenges you have followed them through. You seem determined about this one–and I think all you need is to find a happy balance where you can still enjoy occasional treats without feeling bad about yourself. It’s great that you know your triggers–for me it’s peanut butter–I could honestly down an entire jar in one sitting. So–I live by the motto–out of sight out of mind–I just never keep it in the house. Again–don’t be so hard on yourself. You still look amazing and you still eat pretty darn healthy. I’m sure you’ll find a balance that works for you! If you ever want to chat you can totally e-mail me–yaarazleve@gmail.com–(yes I’ve e-mailed you a few times before–I tend to ask a lot of questions–lol!)
Courtney says
Thank you so much, Yaara! That is so nice of you! :)
Yellow Haired Girl says
I love this! While I didn’t come back from a vacation recently, I have had lots of fancy work lunches, after work drinks/appy nights, weekend parties lately … it’s been adding up. And I’ve noticed a difference in how I feel, too! I’ve been contemplating making a nutrition plan … my body needs to get more veggies in it! And trust me, girl, you looked fabulous in those St. Patty’s photos :)
Amanda says
This is why I love your blog. You’re real and honest about the struggles we all deal with. And, as a side note, you look awesome in your St. Patty’s Day pics. I clicked your link to last year’s pics and immediately thought, “wow, she didn’t need to lose weight last year, but she looks even better now!” – so take that for what it’s worth. I always ask myself WHY I let myself fall off the wagon when I feel so good on the wagon? It’s a never ending battle! But we know how to fix it.
Britt says
This post is sooo me…..I love sweets and its hard habit to break!
Kelli says
Hi Courtney,
Thanks for such a candid post. I have been reading for about a year and hardly ever comment, but wanted to on this one. I am less than two months away from my wedding (at Century House BTW!) and I have been eating better and exercising. I feel great, but am worried about the honeymoon and letdown after the wedding. Reading your blog has inspired me to try to be healthier and easier on myself when I am not (mango key lime cheesecake). Keep it up as you are awesome!
Courtney says
YAY for the Century House!!! Have you been working with Marge? :)
Kelli says
I have been working with Marge and she has been awesome! She is transitioning out of doing weddings and they have a new consultant helping her. She will be with me throughout the rest of my planning though thankfully! You looked amazing on your wedding day btw!
Courtney says
Awww, that’s great! I don’t know if she’d remember me, but if you think of it, tell her I said hi!
And thank you :)
Michelle (Better with Berries) says
I’m about due for a “new plan on the plan” mode, even though I haven’t really been on a specific plan to begin with. I just have fallen into some bad habits (snacking after and around dinner is my all-time biggest!) and last night I kind of realized I needed to kick it up a notch.
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
thanks for opening up about this and being honest courtney! i, too, have a neverending love for sweets, so i can most definitely relate!!! it’s challenging to get back on track after a vacation or multiple celebrations that revolve around food, but i think it’s great that you’re able to recognize it, put your foot down, and do something about it. you’re a true, honest, and great example of living out a healthy lifestyle! keep it up!
clare @ fittingitallin says
I am in your EXACT same position. I was doing SO well and feeling great in January, then I slowly let things slide and my cravings came back. I was snacky like crazy, but on a little weight, and found myself completely unhappy with myself. So this is “step back” week where I am eating really well (my achieve smoothies have helped!!) and am already feeling better.
It’s a constant battle!
Elizabeth says
This post just reminds me why I love reading your blog … you’re very honest, but overall you have such a healthy attitude about food. I know it wasn’t always so, so it’s really something that you can recognize that you don’t feel good about how you’re eating, and change it because of how you feel and not how you feel you should look – by the way, you look completely fine!
I also have a sweet tooth and have realized it’s something I’ll have to deal with the rest of my life … not that it’s a huge problem in the grand scheme of problems, but personally it’s something I’ll have to keep a good attitude about. Thanks for being a good example :)
Mariel says
aww, i love this post and its great that you were so honest :)
you seriously will get back to that place before, if you can do it one time, you can do it again!
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
Great post today! I fell off the bandwagon in November and Dceember last year and it took a hard time to get back to eating healthy. I don’t crave the sugary sweets but I do crave fruit. Lately I haven’t been able to get enough of it. I’ll take fruit anyday over a cookie.
I love that your honest and open, it makes you real and not just a person who hides behind the falls, if that makes sense.
Shana says
I also had to cut back on the baking. Not because it’s unhealthy to have treats but because I would have a “treat” every single time I walked in the kitchen. Even if I could refuse the temptation, just seeing it made me think about it and want it that much more. Unfortunately, the best strategy for me is to plan all of my treats so there is no getting on or off track. It’s not the most fun approach to eating, but it relieves me of the obsessive thinking and the guilt. I’m trying very hard to be a more intuitive eater but it’s a very slow process!
Melissa @ Some Sugar Added says
I love this post! I have been there numerous times and it helps to find that other people go through the same cycles. Keeping ice cream in the house is always my biggest downfall too…whenever we buy it, I promise myself I’m going to measure out that half cup serving size and not eat it every night. Right. Glad I’m not the only one that has trouble with it! Thank you for posting this!
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
Thanks for being honest. We’ve definitely all been there. I often have a hard time when I bake because when my baked goods come out of the oven, I often end up eating several right then and there … I’m tasting to make sure everything tastes good, but then I’m also just indulging too much. That’s one habit that I definitely need to break! :)
Shannon says
Oh Courtney, I think that was my question your referenced in your post. I didn’t mean to make you feel like your pictures looked unflattering at all!! I actually didn’t notice any change in your post-vacay photos, and that’s why I asked. I was hoping you might have some tips for staying on track and getting back on track after the vacation is over. I am going on a beach vacation in a couple of months and have been trying to clean up my diet and shape up in time, but I gotta tell you – it’s so hard!! Like you, I have an undying love for fro yo and homebaked goods. For me though, I love all things sugar, and for me it creates a horrible cycle of bingeing on sugar and then going back to eating clean. I’m horrible at indulging and limiting it. I guess all my years of dieting have contributed to some disordered eating habits. Anyway, in no way did I mean to imply that your appearance had changed and I’m so sorry that you took it that way. Thank you for being so honest and I’m right there with you – my love of sweets will be a lifelong struggle. :)
Karleen says
Shannon, I can totally relate sugar binging habits with you! you are not alone! I feel so in control for weeks and then i slip once and it’s a total downfall for like a week straight. All the while, I’m thinking, HELLO ME!, control yourself! lol good luck on finding that self-control and getting to where you want to be for your trip! you can do it!!
Shannon says
Thanks, Karleen!!
Courtney says
Haha, Shannon it was your comment! But honestly, I didn’t take it as rude or mean or anything like that. It just came right around the same time where I was already feeling sort of crappy so I automatically went into “girl mode” and got down on myself.
Thank YOU for reading…and for sparking my desire to write this post! :)
Debbie (Accidently Delish) says
I don’t comment a lot, but I do read your blog consistently. And one thing I must say doll is YOU ARE GORGEOUS. i know you are doing your nutritional plan to be healthy, but I always look at you and think “this girl does not need to lose weight” I love that you actually give in to your cravings, because that’s why most “diets” don’t work. They make us suffer ultimately.
I am currently recovering from an ED and have actually been doing quite well. Really pushing myself on my food intake and variety. I actually recently hit a spot where I got so frustrated and just wanted to change what I was doing. And actually reading this post made me realize I can’t do that. I need to keep having my bigger lunches even though they “make me uncomfortable”. It’s all about our health. And yes, even I have accepted that ice cream, cookies, frozen yogurt here and there is not the end of the world. It takes our body almost a year to actually permanently gain weight. So why should I obsess over one day?
And I also want to note. I AM GLAD YOU HAD FUN IN MEXICO. Isn’t that what vacations are for? To indulge? Yes. So did you gain “a few pounds” maybe for a week, but I guarantee you, your body balanced out.
Keep it up girl and seriously. You are gorgeous. Inside and out it seems <3
Courtney says
Debbie, thank you so much for your comment. I totally agree with everything that you said about not obsessing over one day. You’re so right!
Thank you for being so kind and for being such a loyal STSL reader (I know I’ve been seeing you around these parts for a while now!) :)

I have the same problem with sweets and I’m so with you… to me it’s not about the weight, I just FEEL better when I limit my sweets intake.

I have the same trouble with sweets – I cannot resist them!
For me my motivation is to get into “personal trainer shape.” I”m going to be testing at the end of May for NASM and I want to be in GREAT shape. I’ve been weight training more, and really watching what I eat.
But that post meal chocolate craving stays with me, and it’s SO HARD to combat.
Good luck to you!

Good for you, Courtney! It’s hard to have setbacks, but it’s also honest and real and what makes us human. I quickly realized that the structured eating plan didn’t work for me and decided to abandon it. I felt like treats were totally off limits, which made it a free for all when I decided to let myself have them. And that wasn’t a good thing. Now, I’m doing things my own way, enjoying treats when I want to, but not like it’s my job. ;) And not having them in the house is a huge help. I do love to bake, so that’s hard, but I’ve also realized that I can satisfy my baking itch by making healthy recipes, too, which helps a ton. Thanks for the update!

I feel the EXACT same way Courtney! Although i didn’t take a long vacation, I took a couple short weekend trips, for birthdays and whatnot and have found it sooooo difficult to get back into a healthy routine once I’m home. I also moved and didn’t get a fridge or microwave into my new place for a couple weeks so I used that as an “excuse” that I couldn’t have healthy food in the place and made some unhealthy choices. Dumb excuse once I look back on it but I know I was at where I wanted to be about 2months ago so I know I can get there again:) and yes, I stopped to get a yummy (fatty) caramel latte and pretzel m&m’s on my way home from work last night:/ grrr

I did really well on my plan too! I lost 5lbs! and then my trip to Savannah happened this weekend and I’ve basically been OFF last week and THIS week.
with my birthday next week, I dont think im getting back on track anytime soon but my plan is to start THE plan again on April 1.
I hope I didnt gain back too much of what I lose following Jim’s plan :( :(
I hear ya on the ice cream though – I cannot keep ice cream products in the house or i will just gorge on it (i’ve had 1 pint total in the past TWO days) ridiculouys. I also don’t bake at all anymore b/c i have zero self control.
Courtney says
I’m sure you didn’t! April 1st is right around the corner – you’ll be ready! :)

Great post – I like reading these becuase it shows what we all suffer with sometimes – sweet cravings! I probably have a cookie or chocolate everyday just so I don’t go overboard. I think moderation is key or goin cold turkey will come back to haunt u!
I still think u eat really healthy compared to the rest of the world!

I completely agree; it’s hard to get into a routine of healthy eats but it is so easy to get off track. We have huge families on both sides and family gatherings are hard and so is that notorious time of the month for me where I crave sweet AND salty. It’s great though, once you’re in a groove and stop craving; makes it all worth it in the end and feels great. Have a wonderful weekend, Courtney!

Good luck! I have to say ( and I really hope this comes out right!!) that it’s almost comforting to know that people who are at a healthy weight (because I think you look awesome) struggle with things that those of us at a very unhealthy weight struggle with as well.

I absolutely know what you mean!

It’s funny the timing of this post because that is exactly how I have been feeling for a while! I struggle with having cravings for sweets and unnecessary snacks after dinner (just out of habit) and I am finally fed up. Time to do something about it and feel better about myself! Honestly it really is all about committing to it and setting yourself up for success like you said- I can’t bake or buy ice cream to keep in the house any more because I will eat it in two days! I do agree that sweets should be enjoyed outside the house and only occasionally! You can do it Courtney!! ;-) Wish me luck too! By the way, your blog has steadily become my favorite to visit- you are too sweet!

Its amazing how easily one can fall off the wagon! Personally, i found quitting smoking easier than quitting my overindulgence habit!! :p
At least you’re recognizing a lot about yourself & can try to do better!

I can totalllllly relate! I have such a sweet tooth that I gave up ALL sweets for Lent, including anything with chocolate, caramel, etc. I usually have a hard time turning it down, but since it’s for Lent, it hasn’t seemed as hard (or I’m just going crazy) you’re only human though! And it’s definitely never a good idea to completely eliminate something you love. I admire the fact that you can acknowledge this and talk about it! Ps-I dont know what St. Pattys Day pics the reader was talking about because you always look gorgeous to me!

thats so funny my sweet tooth has recently come back too..hard core!! same reasons i think…i had a friend visit from out of town so we both took that as an excuse to eat like crap..we’re also both pregnant so i guess we kinda have an excuse. but i dont want to use that as an excuse to not eat healthy…so im trying to get off my candy kick and add more veggies again!

I feel I am in the same position you are! Although I am not as healthy of an eater as you are or I would like to be, I had also started a plan in January: working out routinely and journaling what I ate everyday. I (and my boyfriend who did this with me) had been doing really well and had lost some pounds and inches!! But then, spring break came and I had the same thought you did… just enjoy it and don’t worry about the plan. Well, that came and bit me in the butt because now my sweet tooth has also came back with a vengeance and my eating has not been as focused as I would like. We have gotten back in the gym on our regular days which is a plus. As for the food part, I am bringing more fruits into the house so I am less tempted to go for the snacky sweets that my boyfriend absolutely loves! It is just good to know that others are going through the same thing as me. Reading your blog does encourage me to eat healthier and get into shape for myself :) If you ever have any advice what it comes to “the plan” I would appreciate it!

Gosh I can TOTALLY relate! A few too many sweet treats and my cravings are out of control. I have to go cold turkey for a couple of days and then it is AMAZING that I really don’t even think about them anymore. I love what Colleen from the Lunch Box Diaries said about mental health and medication. You get to a point where you feel like you can eat “just one cupcake” but then it turns into two and before you know it you want them for breakfast and lunch and dinner for days on end! I have read numerous times that just one fatty or sugary meal can reek havoc on your brain and you can expect to have cravings for those same foods for up to 3 days!
This was a REALLY interesting article that changed the way I look at food:

You’re awesome Courtney!!!!
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
I can totally sympathize with this! I’ll go through weeks where I feel totally in control & like I’m doing really well controlling my sweet tooth, then I’ll go through weeks where all I want are sweets, especially after dinner!
I was looking through some of my wedding pictures recently & noted how much thinner my face looked, even though I’ve only gained maybe 3 lbs.?! I’ve always been quick to say “ah, it’s only 3 lbs., who cares?” Put that’s the point… it’s ONLY 3 lbs., so why not get it back off again?

HI I’m Eva and I’m a suggar addict.
yupp I have come to this realization on and off this past year, avoiding it for a while. But the good and bad news is that if I have sugar in my system at all (cheat and eat little bits here and there) it just doesn’t stop. If I don’t way sugar in my diet and make an attempt to avoid it then I am totally fine once its out of my system. For me with sugar, more is never enough.

I want to join this “kick the sweet addiction” challenge too! I find that I eat really well during the day but then really struggle at night to avoid the sweets after dinner! Maybe I should up my snacking during the day and challenge myself in different ways. Thanks for the post and motivation! :)

This post really spoke to me! I went to Mexico a couple weeks after you did, and I was doing so well before I left – eating filling, nutritious meals and not snacking at night. But then, vacation came and went… and I found myself eating OUT OF CONTROL and it’s still going on! I crave fro-yo and brownies every day, and when I indulge in these cravings it only gets worse! But thanks to your post, I’m inspired to get back on the bandwagon. I, too, want to be in the position I was a month ago and feel great in my body because I know I’m being healthy. Thanks so much for this! :)

Thanks for the post, Courtney! I can completely relate to your struggle with sweets and overindulging, even though I know I LOVE how I feel when I’m feeding my body cleanly and the way that is best for me. It is a constant struggle, but it is refreshing to hear your honesty – that even YOU, a personal trainer and healthy lifestyle blogger struggle with this too.
There was a great quote from Elizabeth Banks in last month’s Women’s Health that was something along the lines of..”Why do people constantly grab for the junk food they know is bad for them, when they can just reach for a banana which is guaranteed to do a body good?” I think that’s a good way to look at things…as if reaching for the fruit over the sweet is a GOOD thing and not a sacrifice! :)
So, thanks! And good luck with jumping back full force into your focus on eating more nutritionally!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Good luck, girl! I’m right there with you! I’m in a constant state of working to reduce my sweets intake because it just sends my sweet tooth into a crazy spiral that I can’t seem to stop.
