Yesterday was a rest day on the workout front and there are two main reasons I love rest days: 1) I get at least 45-60 minutes extra sleep in the morning, and 2) I get to skip a day washing my hair. Even if that means that it usually still winds up looking a little straggly the next day.
But really, when I do work out in the mornings, there is really no way I’m getting away with not washing my hair that day. You guys have that problem too, right? Or are you blessed with hair that can go like, 5 days without washing. If you’re one of those people, I’m super jealous of you.
Yesterday, me and my straggly hair were lucky enough to have a mid-afternoon rendezvous with my handsome husband and some iced coffees from DD.
Cookie dough iced coffee with just some skim milk, for the win. I have every intention of continuing to make this my iced coffee of choice until it runs out again for the season. Loaded with sugar or not, I just love the stuff.
Speaking of things I love…my beloved Justin’s vanilla almond butter. Sadly, I finished off the jar yesterday at work, so it looks like it’s time to stock up again (I always buy mine from iHerb.com – use my coupon code SAZ564 to get your own discount!).
Oh, and good news…I remembered both my avocado AND salad dressing for yesterday’s lunch. Thank goodness.
By the time Jay and I both got home from work yesterday, we were more than ready for some dinner. Although we have one more Blue Apron meal to cook up this week, we decided to save it (likely for today) and whip up something else quick and easy.
I took out one of the boxes of Van’s pasta that we got a couple of months ago, and Jay cooked that up along with some chicken sausage, peas, and carrots. We were both thoroughly impressed with the pasta – definitely something we’d pick up from the store for a quick weeknight dinner option!
I also snacked on some of Lucas’s dinner which he, of course, barely touched. I’ll always love me some fish sticks though (the Trader Joe’s brand ones are good!) so I’m not complaining.
Thanks for sharing, dude.
The rest of the evening was spent hanging out with these two cuties.
While also continuing to finish off the Easter candy. I’d say we’re making a pretty good dent, wouldn’t you?
Now I’ve got a living room full of toys that need picking up, and then a couch that’s calling my name. Wednesday night = TV night (then again, pretty much every night = TV night for us over here…whoops). I always struggle with Wednesday nights too, because I want so badly to stay up to watch Nashville, but I know I’ll regret it come my 5:15am alarm the next morning. The struggle is real, my friends.
I’ll catch you guys tomorrow – happy almost Friday!

i am one of those people who can go a few days without washing my hair unless I go to spin class. Some days it’s just not an option, ha! And I totally feel you on the late TV shows, I always DVR them and save them for the following night. The struggle is real!

I love rest days unless I”m stuck at the office, and then they are super annoying simply because I get so ansty! But as long as I can take a walk, I’m good. I like them when I am traveling though. But to be fair, I don’t have a behbeh (unless you count my boss and husband, haha). But a good rest day is soooooo nice :D

I love Nashville but always have to watch it the next day since iTunes doesn’t post it until then over here in Switzerland!
Linz @ Itz Linz says
AMEN to not washing your hair lol

Oh my goodness I love this post for so many reasons. I just realized both our husbands names are Jay and my favorite snack in the whole wide world is Justin’s vanilla almond butter, in fact I featured it on a post last week. Rest days simply rock and so do you!

I love Justins so much! Since we moved we can’t get it so I import it from the US!

I know this is going to sound weird, but you have to ‘train’ your hair to not wash it everyday. My hairdresser actually told me this tip. The less you wash it, the less oils it will produce so the less you will have to wash it. That being said, I totally understand wanting to wash it after a workout but I found a way around that too! I just wait until my hair dries after the workout (or use a hairdryer if I’m in a rush) and then dry shampoo! Dry shampoo is my favorite hair product! I used to buy it at the salon but I recently switched to pantene. I love the way it smells, they sell it at the grocery store and drug stores, and it is cheap!

That Vans pasta looks amazing and I love how you added to it to make a hearty meal. If I can find this this weekend it is one on the meal plan for next week! Thank you!
Hayley@HealthyRegardsHayley says
Right?! Isn’t the vanilla almond butter the best?! I have to get the single packets, I don’t trust myself with a whole jar (;
Nikki says
Wow, Lucas is starting to look more and more like Jay. I am in the same situation with my son. He’s a daddy mini-me!!

How do you pre-make your salads for the week without them getting all slimy? What do you put in them (and what do you add later, etc…)?
Courtney says
I prep the bases ahead of time with lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes (only grape, not regular…too soggy), dried cranberries, and meat (chicken, turkey, etc.). Then either the night before or morning of, I’ll add avocado, or hardboiled egg, or cheese (anything that would make it a bit more mushy). Hope that helps!?

I hear ya with the dirty hair thing! I used to always have to wash my hair after the gym- then my sister in law told me she actually blow-dries the sweat out of her hair some mornings so she doesn’t have to wash it. Sounds gross, but it really works! It actually has really good volume too – I just blow dry it upside down (takes less time than soaking wet from the shower), spray in some dry shampoo and comb through. Beachy waves! Voila!
Kimberly says
I like this idea! What kind of dry shampoo do you use?
Kelsey Bjelland says
The best one I’ve found is the Dove brand!
Kimberly says
Thank you! I will give that one a try!
Kristen Prusak says
I totally do the no-wash thing after the gym! My trick, as a few others have mentioned, is to blow dry the sweat. I know sounds gross, but it keeps me from having to fully wash and dry my hair every day! And yes, dry shampoo for the win! I also have a range of hairstyles to use for day 2 or 3 of dirty hair. Clean hair – down and wavy, day 2- half up and day 3- total ponytail day!

I’m so jealous of people who can go multiple days without washing their hair. I’m like you, lucky to skip one day. I love that almond butter sooo much and always have some on hand! Have a lovely Thursday :)

My dad likes putting sausage in his pasta sauce too.

Confession: I recently went three days without washing my hair, one of them being a workout day. Unless I’m dripping in sweat I try to only wash my hair every second day because it’s said to be healthier to alow the hair to keep up its own balance. Getting over that initial ‘icky’ feeling of not hopping into the shower after a workout is the hardest but soon enough you can see the hair doesn’t get any oilier than up to a certain point. Okay, that sounds a little gross but I think you know what I mean :) .
Liv @ Healthy Liv says
Not having to wash my hair and getting extra sleep are my favorite two perks of rest days, too! I absolutely have to wash my hair on days that I work out, especially when it’s hot outside and I’m sweating buckets while running. But even all winter long, I still have to wash my hair every day. So envious of girls who can just throw in some dry shampoo and call it a day!
Sarah @Sweet Miles says
I’d say it’s a rare day when I actually take time to wear my hair down and flat ironed to work :) We typically rock buns around here! Glad you enjoyed your rest day! That coffee looks delish…I would kill for some caffeine right about now!
Danica @ It's Progression says
I sometimes skip a day of washing my hair, but not often, and that’s really the max I can get away with. I’m definitely not one of those people that goes for 4-5 days without washing it, I’m a little envious of them, too!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Rest days are pretty great for the reasons you mentioned, but fun workouts makes me pretty happy … guess there’s pros and cons to both. ;)
Love me some DD cookie dough iced coffee! You got me hooked!

Is there anything better than Easter candy? I don’t think so.
I’ve been loving iced coffee, especially since it is so nice out now…even though we drink it year round here too ;)
I see all these recommendations for dry shampoo. You should check some out and ask your mom for tips…my problem is that I have dark hair too. I’ve tried dry shampoo before and it was like combing dry gel out of my hair and it left a “stiff” residue behind too. After all that time, I felt like I could’ve just washed it and put hit up in a neat ponytail for work.
I took my son out for a run this am and hours later, I’m still rocking a wet bun. Seems like a fair trade off to me :) Happy Thursday!
Ashley @ A Lady Goes West says
I think if you just tried NOT washing your hair after a workout once, you’d start to accept it more. I use dry shampoo religiously, and have to wear my hair in a ponytail the next day, but it totally works. Give it a go! And I had those same little carrot-chocolate-Easter candy things. So small and tasty! :) Oh and I always do a rest day on Sunday, which means sleeping late and never breaking a sweat!
Lou says
I know I’m in the minority (here and elsewhere), but I wash my hair almost every day (I might skip once or twice a week). I workout 6 days a week and my extremely thick hair absorbs sweat like a sponge. I’ve tried the ‘dry up the sweat’ thing and do use a dry shampoo on the days I skip washing, but honestly I just feel gross. I’m sure it’s a mental thing. I have really healthy, thick hair, so I guess I don’t worry about damaging it from washing and styling (almost) every day. I have blond highlights, so the regular washing doesn’t seem to bother them … I do know that my friends that color their hair (not lighten it) wash less for the fade issue.

The Van’s pasta dish looks great! I’m already a big fan of Van’s cereals and frozen items, so I’ll definitely have to look out for their pasta!
Ashley says
Such cute pictures of Lucas! I have to know, what color lipgloss/lipstick are you wearing in the DD picture? Love it!
Courtney says
Oh gosh, haha…99% of the time I’m just wearing chapstick…and that’s all I was wearing in that picture too! But thank you! :)
Caitlin says
I LOVE rest days for the two reasons you stated! Extra sleep and not showering (yeah I don’t shower, I don’t just skip washing my hair, sorry not sorry) rocks.
Lucas’s dinner looks great. I swear kids get to eat the best foods, haha.
Molly D. says
Girl, you’ve got to hop on the Dry Shampoo train! I used to have to wash my hair every day but now I can get away with 2-3 days of not washing it. And my hair feels and look SO much better because I was drying it out.
Shawna says
i admit, i’m one of those “straighten my hair on a Saturday, don’t have to wash til Wednesday…even if i work out every single day” gals. if i don’t straighten it, i can only go 2-3 days (dry shampoo loves me), but i’ve been known to get 5 multiple times. sounds gross, i know…but if my hair is holding up, i go with it and take that extra time! my best friend is always amazed by/jealous of this as well. :)
Katie McClung says
The first paragraph of this post = my life! I will gladly take some straggly hair for an extra hour of sleep in the morning and rest for sore muscles. There’s always dry shampoo :)

I SO wish I was one of those people who could go 2 or 3 days without washing my hair. Unfortunately, I have oh so lovely hair that must be washed daily if I don’t want to look like I coated it in grease. Weekends, though, are free game. No hair washing if I can help it!
That Van’s pasta looks so delicious! So glad you shared!
It’s pretty much TV night every night over here too. By the end of the day, I’m usually so spent it’s all I can do. ;-)

I love not having to wash my hair on rest days it is the ultimate perk! But I struggle to sleep on nights when I don’t work out during the day. Like my body is waiting for a workout LOL! I need a good DD iced coffee!
AB says
I’ve been wanting to try the cookie dough iced coffee for awhile now. I went to DD only to find out they were out of cookie dough flavor so I tried the French vanilla. It was terrible!! I was so disappointed. I’m taking your word that the cookie dough is delicious!

Another vote for dry shampoo here. Dove & Not Your Mother’s brands are my favorites. I used to be someone who had to wash every day, no matter what. But then I started getting lax about it when we didn’t have weekend plans, then I discovered dry shampoo, and now here I am. Haven’t washed my hair since Tuesday & honestly think I could go one more day. I won’t, but I probably could. And much like jeans after a wear or two, I swear my day two hair looks far better than day one. I don’t know if it’s the fact that my hair/skin is less oily as I get older, or if the not washing every day has “trained” it to handle it better, but I totally love the extra sleep!!
