Good morning! Welcome back to this lovely thing we call Monday. Did everyone have a great weekend?? I’ll tell ya…I mean, my weekends almost always seem to whiz right by, but this weekend in particular seemed extra quick. So much going on!
- Instagram Sunday
- Coffee Date + Bridal Shower + Dinner Party
- Upping the Ante on the June Yoga Challenge
- Get the Day Rollin’
So Jay and I stayed up late (by my standards) last night to watch the whole episode of Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition. I really enjoy this show because I love getting to watch the contestants continue to make progress over the course of a full year, and see just how far they’ve come…
Alright, well actually? I really just like watching the show for the opening introduction when Chris Powell is jumping rope and boxing shirtless.
Okay okay, I’m kidding. Sort of. I like to watch him, but I really do like watching the show too.
During last night’s episode, Chris gave one of his fitness tips on how we (the viewers) should get up and moving during the commercial breaks. I’m typically too lazy to ever even bother, but I was apparently feeling a little spunky last night, so I forced Jay to do some exercises with me. We both did four commercial breaks of 15 crunches, 15 push ups, and 15 squats, and while it may not seem like much, it definitely adds up!
So Chris Powell, if for some odd reason you have to be reading this, thank you so much for getting my butt moving last night and giving me two hours worth of inspiring, quality TV eye candy.
Workout
Despite a later bed time, I knew I have a busy day ahead of me today, so I made sure to be up early enough to get my workout taken care of. Today’s plan consisted of:
- 20 minute Hilly Interval Run
- Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown, Level 1
I have no idea if it’s because of how I slept or what, but my shoulders were screamin’ during that yoga workout. In fact, they’re STILL super sore. I think I need a good, quality neck massage…Jay? Chris Powell?
Breakfast
Tooooootally delicious breakfast happenin’ today.
I whipped up a basic batch of oatmeal this morning and layered it into my empty jar of Justin’s honey peanut butter. I say layered, because I actually took the time to add some granola in between…check this out.
A layer in the middle + a layer on top was absolute perfection. I always get so bummed once I eat all the granola off the top and then still have at least half a jar/bowl of oats (or yogurt) left.
The same thing goes for ice cream cones with sprinkles. Jay and I always say that there needs to be a way to somehow get the sprinkles right in the ice cream. That way you still get to love them the whole time, and not just for the first five minutes of licking them all off so you don’t spill them down the front of your shirt.
Gotta jet…time to head to work!
Question for the Morning:
Do you ever get up and moving during commercial breaks while watching TV?
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
I wish someone would remind me of that before every commercial break – it’s such a good idea but I almost never do it!
Faith @ For the Health of It says
I don’t have cable, but when I did, I used to do some sets of tri-dips off the coffee table and situps with my feet tucked under the couch. It’s a great way to get a little burst of movement without making yourself go to the gym!
Khushboo Thadani says
Shameful to say but the only reason I get up during commercial breaks is to refill my mug of tea, get a snack or use the bathroom! Your breakfast looks so delicious, especially that peanut butter flavor! With self-serve fro yo, I’ve started adding the toppings in the middle and on top so I am “topped up” all the way through!
Blog is the New Black says
I am usually in bed if I’m watching TV, so heck no! ;)
Alyssa @ fit and fun in third says
Is it ridiculous that I actually take my ice cream OFF the cone, mix it in a bowl to get the sprinkles mixed in, and put it back on the cone??
Courtney says
Not ridiculous at all…I think genius is more like it. ;)
Antonia says
Oh my goodness! I tried that Justin’s Honey Peanut Butter this past weekend at Starbucks and absolutely fell in love with it! What store around here carries it?? I was at Shop-Rite yesterday and couldn’t find it. Such a coincidence that I was looking for it and it appears on your blog today! :)
Courtney says
I actually ordered mine off of iHerb.com (if you use my coupon code, SAZ564, you can get $5.00 off your order and they have free shipping!). I know I’ve seen Justin’s at The Fresh Market in Latham, but I don’t remember if they had the honey PB.
Megan says
I love the idea of getting in little workouts during commercials! I need to do this :)
Lindsey says
I sometimes stretch during commercial breaks but that is about it. Love the idea though, especially when you are watching a hour show or longer!
Suzanne @ Fit Minded Mom says
I love Justin’s peanut butter! The oatmeal layered in the jar looks so GOOD, especially with the granola. YUM!
I need to remember to be active during commercial breaks but honestly, I DVR just about everything so I usually just fast forward through them. I can see how the little extra workouts thrown in would add up though!!
Courtney says
Hey! It looks like your comments stopped going to spam! YAY! :)
Suzanne @ Fit Minded Mom says
Yes they did!! It was just my gmail account so hopefully there are no more issues!! Thanks for looking into it for me :-)
Sarah says
I fell asleep during last night’s episode.. I was soo tired! I love the idea of getting up and doing something during the commercial breaks especially with that show because it’s 2 hours!
Ashlee @ A Step in the Right Direction says
I am so glad they have the EM Weight Loss Edition on in the summer. I need stuff on the DVR to watch while on the treadmill and EMWL keeps me walking for 90 minutes.
Courtney says
I always hate it when my toppings suddenly disappear when I’m eating ice cream. That’s why I love the ice cream places that mix your toppings into the ice cream like Cold Stone and Marble Slab Creamery. I also love going to froyo places, piling on the toppings, then mixing them evenly throughout.
Presley (@runpretty) says
Holy abs… that is all. haha
Nicole says
Cold Stone Creamery rolls the ice cream and jimmies together so they are throughout the whole thing! Must try! Delish!
Courtney says
Yes! I do love me some Cold Stone, but I want a way for them to be swirled through the soft serve on a cone ;)
Megan@ The Running Doc says
When I used to watch The Biggest Loser I would totally get inspired and do some exercises during the commercials! I don’t really watch that show anymore though and I’m definitely too lazy during any other show. :)
Jenna@Redheadrunningwild says
It’s crazy that you mention the sprinkles inside the ice cream thing because i was just saying this EXACT same thing the other day! It’s ridiculous how they are only on top of the ice cream!! I have actually gotten a blizzard with sprinkles mixed in, which helps solve this problem but it’s not the same since there’s no cone involved….:-)
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I don’t have TV so the only way I watch shows is through Netflix or Hulu which have zero to very minimal commercial breaks. I should still utilize that time for 20 crunches…i could do that. Maybe i’ll start doing that! ;)
Laurie @ Love, Laugh, Laurie says
Chris Powell should be on every show — both so we can look at him and so he can remind us to move!
Alana says
If you’re getting a cup, ask ice cream servers to put the toppings on the bottom before the ice cream. Sure, they’ll give you a weird look but it’s sooo worth it :)
Courtney says
Noted! ;)
chelcie @ chelcie's food files says
the layering of granola is a great idea I’ll have to try that!
Molly Ritterbeck says
You know…you always know just how to get me moving! I now know how I can fit in some more exercise because I know only take 30 minus of lunch due to daycare summer hours and it has all but killed my lunch time exercise!!!!
Mindy says
I hardly watch tv.. but it is a great idea! Sometimes I will do a few crunches and push-ups before bed.
Yellow Haired Girl says
I’m a commercial break mover! I like to lunge across my living room on breaks … makes me appreciate the show when it comes back from break ;) lunging for 2-3 minutes at a time really works your legs!
Jillian @ Sprinkle Massacre says
Hahah – the ice cream trick is to get it in a cup and layer ice cream, sprinkles, ice cream, sprinkles, and then top it with a cone! That way you get all the goodness. :)
Alysha @Shesontherun says
I always do my PT exercises during TV or foam roll. Excellent multi-tasking if you ask me! Also, this is why I’d love a treadmill at home, I would totally work out while watching TV.
Courtney says
I never do anything during the commercials because by the time I sit down to watch tv I’m zapped for the day. It’s my little bit of down time before heading to bed. Whenever I order a cone with sprinkles I always ask for an additional dish of sprinkles. That way I can keep dipping my cone in it as needed!
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
I haven’t seen Extreme Makeover Weightloss. I’ll hav eto look for it. Chris Powell, Hot! Breakfast looks delish!
Jaren@Kiwi Fit Blog says
I love Chris!! He is so cute and inspiring!! The fiancé and I do that with commercials! It does add up!
Alex @ Healthy Life Happy Wife says
I watched that, too! I always try to do some planks, sit-ups, lunges or push-ups while I am watching tv! Makes me feel better about watching so much tv ;)
Nicole says
What if you were to keep a little bowl of sprinkles on the side to dip your cone or spoon over your ice cream as you went along…?
Side car of sprinkles?? Yes please! :)
Lindsay @ In Sweetness and In Health says
I should totally start doing that during commercials!! I always feel so lazy sitting and watching a bunch of tv and that would definitely help :). And Chris Powell is pretty easy on the eyes too hehe.
Whitney @ Whit Likes Fit says
Oh man, now I feel like I should have watched Extreme Makeover. Instead I opted for DVR’d episodes of the new 90210 (which is a horrible show but I’m sucked in and have to know what happens). I sometimes try to foam roll or do my physical therapy exercises during commercials but the couch is just so much more comfortable so it doesn’t always happen.
Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries says
I’ve never heard of that show! What station is it on?
Courtney says
ABC :)
Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries says
Perfect! Thanks! :)
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I am so jealous of your OIAJ!!! I never buy “fancy” pb since it’s so much more expensive than TJs, maybe one day i’ll just have to!
Shannon says
Sometimes- it depends on the show. If it’s really a good show and I don’t want to miss a second of it, then I stay put on the couch the entire hour. If it’s something like the Bachelor/ette or a different reality TV show (Wipeout), then I get up during commercial breaks and just walk around the house.
Angela @ Health Happiness & Harmony says
I love it! I always eat the bottom/base of salads, fro yo, or oatmeal, and then eat the toppings last. I started layering once I saw them do it at our local fro yo shop. Fro yo, toppings, fro yo, and then more toppings. SO. GOOD.
Diane @ Shades of Me says
Totally off topic, but I came across this article the other day re: Chris Powell’s client on TLC.

Mac says
I did the Powell challenge last night too and it did get tiring towards the end. That and I realized I should not lay down, it’s way more tempting to skip the commercial exercises.
