Every day is different around here. Seriously…I need to keep a calendar out at all times just to remember who is going where and when. Whew!
So since it’s been quite a while since I’ve done a Day in the Life post, I thought it would be fun to do one now that things are a little different and we have another little guy here in the mix. I also love looking back at my older posts like this for my personal enjoyment, so this is just as much for me as it is for you!
All that said, here’s a look at our day yesterday (Tuesday). Tuesday is a work in the office day for me, so it has a bit more going on.
1:20am – (hey, it is technically the start of Tuesday, right?) Alex is awake. His sleep is still totally unpredictable (the night before he slept 12 hours straight), but since he’s up, I get up, nurse him, change his diaper, exchange some smiles, and put him back down.
2:00am – Back in bed. More. Sleep. Please.
6:00am – Alarm goes off. Apparently I hit snooze…I don’t recall.
6:45am – I wake up to my alarm going off again. Somehow I managed to snooze probably 2-3 other times without even realizing it. I think I need a new wakeup system. Time to get up shower, and start getting ready.
7:15am – Put half of my makeup on and realize I need to get Alex up to feed him and get him ready for the day. I check the monitor and he’s already awake, hanging out in there. Perfect! I nurse him, change him, and then we go in to check on big brother.
7:30am – Lucas is up. I work on trying to get him dressed (everything is a struggle these days…) and Jay comes upstairs to get Alex to bring him to daycare. I give my little guy smooches and send him off with daddy.
7:45am – Lucas is finally dressed. I bring him with me into my room so I can finish getting ready while he watches an episode of Blaze and the Monster Machines in bed. He says he wants Cheerios for breakfast, so I run down to grab him some Cheerios and milk and also pour myself a mug of coffee. It’s gonna be a long one.
8:30am – We get teeth brushed after arguing for at least 5 minutes about getting it done…
8:40am – Head downstairs, try to drink more coffee, and get Lucas’s shoes on before he runs away from me.
8:45am – Finishing packing up all of my bags for the day and we’re out the door on our way to preschool.
FYI: The blue tote bag is this Herschel Supply Co. Alexander Select Tote Bag
9:00am – Arrive at preschool. Lucas loves going to find these eggs lately, which is great because it gives him a distraction. Thankfully (knock on wood!) dropoffs have been pretty smooth so far and he really seems to love his preschool! I give him a kiss and a hug and I’m out the door.
9:10am – Make a quick pit stop at DD on my way into work. I still needed (wanted) more coffee and never grabbed myself anything for breakfast so I got an iced coffee (2 pumps caramel swirl and skim milk) and a reduced fat blueberry muffin. I know it’s not good for me, but I don’t care. I love them.
Man, my car is a mess…
9:15am – Arrive at work. Thank goodness I pass two different DD’s right on the way! Get logged in for the day and start going through emails and tickets by priority.
10:25am – Realize what time it is and that I had wanted to go to pump at least a half hour ago. Head to the pumping room and do my thang.
11:00am – Meeting time. I run this one, so I try to make sure I’m there a minute or two before to get things ready to go. Coffee is gone at this point and we’re on to water.
11:30am – Meeting is over, head back to my desk and get back to work.
12:00pm – I’m starving and realize I never had a morning snack (WHAT?!). I break into my container of leftover pasta fagioli from Friday, which I quickly grabbed out of the fridge before leaving in the morning. I’m so hungry I just eat it cold…it’s still amazingly delicious.
12:00pm + 5 seconds later – Lunch is finished. Remember that I need to run out and grab vitamins, toothpaste, and a new toothbrush for Lucas so I make a quick trip over to Target.
I also get *this close* to buying this C mug for myself too, but I put it back. We really don’t need more mugs…unless I want to start throwing some others away!
12:30pm – Head back to work. Look in my purse and remember that I had thrown in one of these Lenny & Larry’s Pumpkin Spice cookies before leaving the house. (Side note, I got one in a lovely package recently and liked it so much that I spent money on a whole box of them from iHerb. They’re crazy good…and I know I’m probably crazy for spending that money on cookies). Anyway…I bust that bad boy open and finish eating it on the walk back in to the office.
12:35pm – Back to work, work, work.
1:45pm – Text our babysitter to check in and see how Alex’s day is going…
Poor guy just can’t quite figure out how to nap well there just yet. Breaks my heart a little every time I hear it, even though she says he’s still happy and totally fine. But it still makes me want to go scoop him up and just rock and cuddle with him. I also realize at this point that I haven’t gotten any updates on Lucas’s day either and hope that he’s doing well with my mother in law (who picks him up from preschool). I’m missing them both quite a bit right now…
2:30pm – Realize (again) that I had wanted to pump probably 30-40 minutes ago but got stuck in the middle of stuff. So I take a break from that and head to the pumping room to take care of business.
2:50pm – Back to work, work, work.
4:15pm – Quickly try to finish up a few things and I’m out the door to go pick up Alex from daycare.
I eat a couple of Blueberry Muffin Larabar Balls on the way. My eating for the day is obviously super awesome so far, if you couldn’t already tell…
4:35pm – Arrive at daycare to get Alex, who is just finishing up his last bottle. He greets me with all sorts of smiles and my afternoon is made. <3
4:50pm – Arrive at home to find a certain somebody waiting for me at the window with the iPad practicing his letters.
5:00pm – I catch up on his day from my mother-in-law, and the two of us play some toys while she hangs out with Alex.
And we trade back and forth a bit.
5:25pm – Jay arrives home from work. I inform him that I forgot to put food in the crockpot for dinner tonight so I have nothing ready to go. We tag team (he does most of it) by quickly marinating some chicken and cooking some sweet potatoes in the microwave. Alex is getting tired and needs a nap, but I don’t really feel like letting him go because I missed him, so I let him catnap in the Ergo.
He naps inside with me while Jay handles grilling and Lucas plays with my mother-in-law.
5:50pm – I get Lucas squared away with his dinner while we finish getting everything ready for ours.
Alex goes in his new seat and watches along with us.
6:00pm – Dinner time – we made it!
6:10pm – Alex let us eat for about 10 minutes before he’d had enough. He was starting to get hungry and it was sort of an odd time for him to eat since it was close to bedtime, but I quickly finished up and nursed him. Worked for me, since I was starting to fill up anyway!
6:30pm – Jay is out the door for his bowling night, so it’s just us. Thank goodness my mother in law will occasionally stick around on Tuesday evenings to help for a little bit. We hang out for a bit and Lucas even gets a popsicle for eating his whole dinner (WOOP!).
These two <3
7:05pm – Lucas didn’t nap today and is extremely overtired, so I switch up the routine and decide to put him down first. Alex should be good since he had his catnap, so I bring Lucas up, brush teeth, put on PJ’s, and we read a few stories while my mother in law stays with Alex.
Typically, I’ll put Alex down first and let Lucas hang out with me with the iPad or let him watch a show in my bed, so tonight was a bit of a treat!
7:25pm – Lucas is down…on to the next one! I head downstairs, prep Alex’s bedtime bottle, then bring him up, get him dressed, give him his bottle, and get him ready for bed, too.
7:47pm – Alex is asleep and I’m out the door. We’ll see how long it lasts for…
7:54pm – Alex is awake. Typical. I head back in and see he had spit up a bit; I clean him up (and want to eat him up with his big, cheesy grin he’s giving me!) and rock with him a bit before he’s back to sleep.
7:58pm – He’s asleep again and I’m out the door. Hopefully it’s an easier night with the bedtime routine!
8:00pm – Head downstairs, say hey to Cody. Poor guy, barely gets any attention these days unless he’s being chased by Lucas…
I go to the sink and debate on washing bottles but then decide that I just don’t have it in me just yet. They can wait.
8:05pm – Head to the computer to do some work for an Usborne Books Facebook party I have tomorrow night (well, tonight actually since this is posting on Wednesday!). Part of what I do as parties come up is offer book recommendations for party-goers, so that’s what I had to finish up.
9:00pm – Finally finish up book recommendations (there were quite a few!). Check the monitors, everyone is still asleep. Realize it’s dessert time, so I head to the kitchen and make myself a bowl of ice cream with a leftover cookie bar.
9:15pm – Begin typing up this post!
9:30pm – Jay arrives home from bowling and tells me he bowled a 700 series – not too shabby for taking a few years off! One of these years I’ll get back into it (I miss it…FYI, for those who haven’t been reading that long…FUN FACT: I’m a New York State High School Champion for bowling. How ‘bout them apples?!)
9:45pm – Chat with Jay some more about the evening while I keep working on this post.
10:05pm – Finished with this post…FINALLY! Geez, that was probably one of the longest posts I’ve written in a LONG time. Time to schedule it up, go relax on the couch for about 5 seconds, then likely head up to get ready for BED. If you’re still reading, thanks for sticking with me!
Lindsay says
Great post. I am also a mom of two and I know how crazy it can get! I love that blue tote bag with all of your pumping stuff. Can you share where it is from?
Courtney says
Thanks Lindsay! The tote is from Herschel Supply Co. – I linked to the exact one above, but they have more on their site here: http://shop.herschelsupply.com/collections/totes I love it!
Brynn says
Whoa what a day! I’m with you, I spend more than I should on the cookies, but they’re so good! And your hair is so cute- love the cut and style!
Courtney says
Thanks, Brynn! And YES, they’re so good aren’t they?? Have you tried the other varieties?? I was debating on chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin….?
Brynn says
The chocolate chip and double chocolate are my favorites!
Heather @Lunging Through Life says
Whoa! I loved seeing just how you manage it all. I can’t imagine working full time and running around like crazy and getting the kids to the right place! haha I have just seen those cookies around and I’m thinking I need to try one!
Courtney says
Yes, you totally should! They’re SO good!!
Jen says
Busy busy….I think I would be napping while pumping if I were you. Would love to know what iPad games u have Lucas use? Alway looking for some good recommendations. And have to say I just love your haircut, it’s the best feeling when you chop it all off, can’t wait to get mine done next month. Your mom does a great job.
Courtney says
Hey Jen! He has been totally loving the ABC app from abcya.com and we also have Elmo’s ABC’s and 123’s
And thank you! She does do a great job :)
Catlin says
what a busy day! – I am a new mom of a new little baby girl and can’t imagine throwing in full-time job and another baby. One is hard enough right now! goodness :)
And I have been looking into trying those cookies – I think ill go ahead and give in!
And keep up the great work momma! mommying is so much harder than in looks.
Courtney says
Congrats on your baby girl, Catlin!! And YES, the cookies are so good!!
Alicia says
What a long day. oh my goodness. I am so excited to have kids, but posts like these scare me!
Courtney says
Hahaha, they used to scare me too Alicia! But it’s just such a routine that I kind of forgot what it’s like to not have chaos ;)
Jocelyn says
Love these posts. Makes me feel better about my shit-show life with two littles! Good to see Cody too–I was wondering if he was still around :)
Courtney says
Haha oh yes, Cody is definitely still around! :)
Marie says
I love these types of posts! I remember the bottle situation; we have twins and were so ready to ditch the bottles when they turned one. Seeing this post reminds me how beyond hectic it used to be but it goes so quickly and now that they’re older, I look back and miss that period because we were in survival mode. Things still don’t slow down as they get older with school and activities/sports, but it’s definitely not hard like the beginning years for sure! Love seeing you enjoy every step.
Courtney says
Thanks so much, Marie! It certainly does go by fast, but some days are definitely longgggg ;)
Brianne says
Working mom life is exhausting lol. It’s always the worst to get both kids in bed and then come down to a kitchen to clean and diaper bag and backpacks and lunches to get ready for the next day. Thankfully my husband is home most nights to help! I always love these day in the life posts!
And ps where is your tote bag from its so cute! I feel like a circus act trying to get out the door with all my little bags so a large tote for all my stuff might be a necessity ?
Courtney says
Haha, yes thankfully my husband usually is too, but Tuesdays can be challenging!
The bag is from Herschel! I linked to the exact one up in the post, but here’s their website (although I can’t find that exact bag on it) http://shop.herschelsupply.com/collections/totes
Kelly T says
Love your blog – you’re incredibly relatable and real. I have 9 month old and two 12 year old stepsons and work full time – feel you on the business of a typical day.
Courtney says
Thank you, Kelly!
Jen says
Thanks for sharing. This is so relate-able! I’m a mom of two with twins on the way. I know my life will be extra crazy soon (and goodbye sleep), but you show with your post what really matters…your family and happiness!
love it!
Courtney says
Thanks so much, Jen! And CONGRATS to you on twins!! Yayyy!!!
Kendra says
Courtney, I only have 1 kiddo (so far) and work full-time. This post is just so REAL. Washing bottles/pump parts at 10pm is the WORST — but a close second was finding time to pump at work. Keep up the great work with the blog and more importantly, with life.
Courtney says
Thank you so much, Kendra! It always helps being reminded there are others in your shoes, doesn’t it? :)
Jessie @ Just Jessie says
I love your hair! And props to you, mama! I can barely take care of myself some days, so I can’t imagine working + taking care of two babies! :)
Courtney says
Thanks so much, Jessie!!
Kim@fitsique says
Shew girl, I don’t know how you do it! I’m stressed just reading about your day! LOL! You are amazing!
Courtney says
Haha, thank you Kim!
Laurie says
Loved the post! I like to see that
I’m not alone in the pump and sterilizing of bottles world. I went back to work last week and the exhaustion is unreal with the two little ones!
Courtney says
Hope all is going well with being back at work, Laurie!!
Courtney says
Love day in the life posts! They are so fun to read. And the short hair is adorable on you! Also, those cookies are my favorite dessert right now. The double chocolate and birthday cake are amazing! Not a huge fan of the regular chocolate chip though. Enjoy your day!!
Bethany @LuluRuns says
Courtney, I have so much respect for you! After having my son a couple weeks ago, I can’t imagine juggling working full-time, being a wife, and being a mom! But, you look like you are rocking it! Way to go :-)
Tricia says
You’re making me tired reading all that – and I have two boys of my own! LOL Thankfully they’re both in school full-time now, which makes things MUCH easier. You’re so lucky you have that nice pumping space! I used to have to seek out an available vacant office within my office – which sometimes had little side windows that I would have to try to cover. Ugh. I did enjoy the few minutes of “down” time it afforded me, however.
Suzanne @ My Life is a Mix says
A long post means that you had a really long day! It makes it all worth it to see those sweet little faces, though!
I’ve yet to try one of those protein cookies and that pumpkin spice flavor has me wanting to change that like NOW!
Also, I love seeing someone who enjoys dessert just as much as I do and isn’t afraid to admit it, lol!
Katie @ Live Half Full says
Phew, very similar to my days with one, I can’t even imagine how tired you are!
ErikaMC says
I love your haircut. I just got 4 inches off mine and it feels so good! It’s about the length of yours now so if you would want to do a styling post that’d be great :) I’ve been back to work now for a month after having our second child (we now have a 5 year old and 4 month old) and I’m still trying to figure out an after-work routine. I have found that if I wash all my bottles and pump stuff when I first get home it’s much better. Our bedtime routine is a little different every night too as to who goes to bed first – that catnap and feeding before bed kind of determine the rest of the night. We have a Bumbo seat but I really like the looks of the one Alex is in – where’s it from/brand?
Courtney says
Hey Erika! Yes, the seat is great!! It’s from Fisher Price and is on Amazon! http://amzn.to/2cDa1lT
Lisa says
Wow! I am exhausted just by reading your post and all that you did! Love reading about you and your family. My 2 “boys” are now adults, so I miss those days. Guess I will have to wait to be a grandma to experience it again. :)
Natalie says
I’ve gotta ask – do you use a curling iron on your hair? I love the way it turns out! I just got my hair cut to a similar length and am struggling with styling it. Would love to know how you do it!
Courtney says
I use either a curling wand or a straightener! I used a curling wand on Tuesday (Nume brand!) I’ve had a few people request so I may need to do a new post on it soon! :)
Mallory says
I LOVE YOUR BLOG!!!! Your blog is one of the only ones I still read to be honest. So many have turned to posting workouts/recipes that you can find literally anywhere on the internet but yours is always real and about your life. It makes it so much more enjoyable to read. THANK YOU.
Courtney says
You’re so welcome, Mallory!! Thank you for reading along for so long (I always recognize your name!!) :)
Lauren says
I am exhausted just reading that. Makes me slightly terrified for what’s to come in 2 short weeks for me! I just hope I get my taste back for coffee after I have the baby. :-)
Courtney says
Oh man, haha, fingers crossed that it comes back!! ;) (And best of luck to you!!!)
Harsha @ Healthy Cooking 'N' Fitness says
I am a full time working mom too with 2 kids and i totally understand how difficult its to manage. Those cookies looks damn delicious and would love to try them soon.
Melissa says
I love reading your posts, this one especially. My son Colton is two days younger then Alex so I love to see where they are together. Colton is my first full term baby, so he’s right on target if not head for his age. My 18mon son is Clark and he was my 28weeker. So reading your struggles on having two under the age of three, feels like the story of my life. It’s not easy! Some ask how you do it and you Just Do It! Loving the hair cut, I’m looking to get something simple and easy to keep up with. I’m lucky if I can get myself together in the mornings. Looking forward to more tips and tricks that are helping you get through your day.
Alyssa says
This post sounds familiar! I’m a full time working mom of a 4 month old and brand new two year old. I’m amazed you were able to fit in the Usborne books after bedtime – usually after bedtime for my boys it’s bedtime for me too!
Bethany says
I just discovered the Lenny & Larry’s Cookies. I bought them for a plane trip (13+ hours) and it was so good with coffee. They had some staying power too. Not the cleanest treat but yum!
