Getting Ready for Halloween

I don’t know about all of you guys, but I feel like October came and (almost) went in the blink of an eye. Here were, just a few days shy of October 31st…Halloween!

I honestly think Halloween is one of my favorite holidays to decorate for, even though we did keep the décor a bit low key this year. With half of it somewhere in boxes that have yet to be opened, I just didn’t have the energy to go snooping through it all.

IMG_1220

But that doesn’t mean we aren’t nice and festive over here!

IMG_1221

I look forward to Halloween more and more every year as Lucas gets older. Sure, Jay and I always enjoyed it before kiddos (we had some pretty fun Halloween party adventures in the past), but getting to see Lucas all dressed up is even better. Yes, even if we’re not drinking out of a Pumpkin Keg!

IMG_4173Lucas’s 1st Halloween!

Even though he hasn’t been super pumped about being in costume thus far, he winds up staying in it long enough just to make his mommy happy.

First Halloween // Second Halloween

This year, we attempted a couple of borrowed costumes from our friends’ kids but, unfortunately, they were all either too big or too small. I set out to the store to try to find something else for him, but the thought of spending $30-$40 on something he’s probably not going to want to keep on his head anyway really had me questioning what to do.

So then I started browsing around on Amazon for something to do with construction (since he’s OBSESSED with all things construction) and came across this role play set.

IMG_1213

I figured, hey, at least he’ll be able to get some use out of it after Halloween, and it’ll wind up fitting him for years. Win-win!

IMG_1214

So now we’re all ready to set out trick-or-treating this Saturday. We have no idea what to expect in terms of trick-or-treaters in our new place, but we’ve stocked up on some candy for the big kiddos, and some more spooky snacks from Bitsy’s Brainfood for the little ones.

IMG_1190

Bitsy’s Brainfood has some newly designed packaging for Halloween, making them a perfect snack to give out to your little trick-or-treaters.

IMG_1193

Orrrr, to keep for your own little ghosts and goblins. Winking smile

IMG_1192

Because they really are something you can feel good about giving them. They’re nut free (perfect for bringing into school parties, too!), GMO-free, USDA Organic, and they’re baked with whole grains, fruits, and vegetables like sweet potatoes and beets.

IMG_1194

And to appeal to the little ones eating them, they’re also in adorable alphabet shapes…perfect for practicing those ABC’s during snack time!

IMG_1196

I’ll personally vouch for the Sweet Potato Oatmeal Raisin flavor…they’re delicious!

IMG_1197

Plus, they have a $1 off coupon right on their website that you can print out!

IMG_4359

Lucky for you guys, Bitsy’s Brainfood is giving one lucky reader a $50 Target gift card!

I’ll announce the winner on Thursday, October 29th. Good Luck! Smile

When I was little the neighborhood I lived in would have a block party every year, instead of the kids trick or treating. They would have games and food and a haunted house. Each year it would rotate to another street.

My favorite healthy-ish Halloween treat is a random snack I made for my cousins one year: (frozen) banana mummies. You just peel bananas and drizzle them with yogurt or caramel sauce to make "bandages" and stick on chocolate chips as eyes and freeze them briefly so everything has time to set. Pretty cute :)

We didn't dress up so we decided to watch a scary movie in my friends backyard. I was always afraid of scary movies but decided to just watch it. So while we are watching the movie we hear weird noises in the yard. We love dressing up for Halloween! When my daughter was little (3?) I made her a spider costume. It turned out super cute & I was so proud of myself (I am NOT crafty)! I still have it (couldn't bear to part w/ it)... she's 16!

My favorite Halloween memory is when, at the age of 6, I firmly told my parents I'm NOT doing Halloween this year or y year I the future because I don't want to beg for candy. I told them that if I was good and helped do things around the house, I would nicely ask them for candy and they could buy me some instead of having to beg strangers. HAHA the things you say as a kid!

My husband and I LOVE Halloween and we love to get dressed up and really get into the spirit. Although, the last few Halloweens have been EXTRA SPECIAL because we had a son and he loves this holiday too, so it's really fun that he shares the same enthusiasm about Halloween with us. This year our son's going to be The Hulk (boy loves his superheroes), I'm going to be a tribal princess/warrior and my husband's costume is TBD (talk about waiting until the last minute), lol! Sadly, I do not know of any healthy Halloween treats....because this is a time of year where I definitely indulge ;)

Those snacks look good! Never seen them before. I'll have to keep an eye out. My favorite part about Halloween is trick or treating with my kids. They have so much fun! :)

I had a broken ankle on Halloween when I was 9, and my best friend pulled me around in a wagon so I didn't miss out on trick or treating!

I remember one year hearing about a house that was giving away huge stuffed animals rather than candy-it was a 2 mile hike but worth it! I carried an elephant around all night and still have it many years later!

I love making homemade "healthy" granola but find myself adding a few handfuls of candy corn into it.

My favorite treat to make for Halloween isn't exactly healthy but it's cute! At our house we call it 'dirt cake' when we make it during the year but for Halloween we call it The Haunted Graveyard Cake. Layer crushed oreos and a cream cheese, confectioners sugar layer...and then on top we decorate it with candy spiders, candy skeletons, and candy headstones!

Pumpkin raisin cookies are delish! And despite the butter and sugar, they're healthy because the contain pumpkin and raisins, right?!?
