Pregnancy fashion. It can be tough. On the one hand, I don’t deny that there is a TON of adorable maternity wear out there these days. Seriously…I could spend a fortune! But on the other hand, I have a hard time justifying the purchase of clothing (which is typically more expensive than regular clothing) that I’m only going to wear for a few months before retiring them to the basement bins.
With my first pregnancy, I definitely bought a lot more maternity wear (which, duh, makes sense…I can just wear the same stuff this time around!). But even still, I’ve found myself looking for just a few basic wardrobe staples that I can use throughout the remainder of my pregnancy, which can be combined with pieces I can still wear after pregnancy, too. More bang for my buck, if you will!
So today, I wanted to share…
15 Must-Have Pregnancy Wardrobe Staples

1. Cozy loungewear and bottoms
As soon as I get home from work everyday, the first thing I do is toss on my yoga pants or sweatpants. You always feel better when you’ve got comfy, stretchy pants on, but during pregnancy, it feels about 1,001 times better. I’d say to make sure you have at least 3-5 pairs you can rotate so you’re never without any while some may need to be washed!
2. Open Cardigans for Layering
I already showed you guys the sweater pictured above, and I still love it. During pregnancy, you can wear it open and show off that beautiful bump, no matter how large it may grow! Afterwards, feel free to button it up or keep it open. Either way, it’s a piece that you’ll be able to continue to use for a long time.
3. A Flowy/Oversized Poncho or Kimono
The poncho pictured above is actually a nursing poncho/cover up, which makes nursing a breeze (seriously, they’re amazing). During pregnancy, you’ll have plenty of room to grow with it still covering, and it’s definitely a great piece to have in the first trimester, when you’re not quite showing, but definitely still growing and in that awkward stage.
4. An Oversized Plaid/Button Up Shirt
These are wonderful. And the great thing is that you don’t even have to get them in maternity sizing if you plan on keeping them unbuttoned. I have a number of plaid button up shirts that I rotate continuously, while just keeping them unbuttoned with a layering tank underneath. Whether you get one specifically made for maternity or not (this one is adorable), either way, you’ll still be cozy and will have a piece you can dress up or down and can pair with just about anything.
5. A Comfortable Thong/Panty
I get it…not everyone is big on thongs, especially during pregnancy. But honestly, I don’t mind them at all as long as they’re the right fit. My favorites are those with a lace waistband like the one pictured above from Kohl’s. It prevents extra digging into the sides and really helps to create a seamless look; especially when you’re wearing bottoms like leggings or a maxi skirt!
I also tend to be a big fan of boyshorts during pregnancy because I don’t always feel like wearing a thong, and the boyshorts also hide the panty lines fairly well. It’s an added bonus when you can find ones that are extra low-rise (in the front, to go under the belly) and ones with a lace waistband, too, like THESE and THESE!
6. Postpartum Panties
Okay, maybe I’m cheating a bit, since these are geared more towards when you’re finished with pregnancy. But even still. The postpartum panel minimizes your belly while providing a supportive, comfortable fit. And there are a number of seamless panty options at Kohl’s you can choose from, too. Plus, I don’t know about you, but even if they do look a bit like granny panties, I’ll take it as long as things don’t feel like they’re hanging out all over the place postpartum!
7. A Good Sports Bra
Or any bra, for that matter! A good fitting bra will make a WORLD of difference during pregnancy and postpartum (I’ve gone up almost a cup size and a half both pregnancies!) and you always want to make sure that the girls are comfy.
8. Maxi Skirts
I love maxi skirts pregnant or not, but during pregnancy they are just one of the best things ever. The elastic waistband is forever forgiving, and sometimes, it just feels nice to not have your legs squeezed into some pants/jeans/leggings. Layer up with a fun, open cardigan during fall/winter, or pair with your favorite tees and tanks in the spring/summer for a casual, but put together look.
9. Cute, Comfortable Flats and Sneakers
Not much explanation needed here. Your feet are tired. They may be swollen. You’re carrying around a bunch of extra weight that you’re not used to. Do yourself a favor and slip into some comfy flats and sneakers (bonus if they have added support). Your feet will thank you!
10. A Comfortable T-Shirt Dress
This was a total last minute purchase for me, but it turned out to be one of my favorite maternity purchases. The dress is super comfy and can be dressed up or down, depending on where I need to wear it (the one linked above was dressed up with some jewelry and heels for my work party, but it also looks cute with a printed scarf and sneakers, too!).
11. A Fashionable Scarf
You don’t always have to accentuate the bump while you’re pregnant! Keep the top basic and pair it with a fun, seasonal scarf for some added pops of color to your outfit. These were especially helpful for me in the first trimester, as a way to try and draw attention away from the awkward-sized bump (aka, when it looked like I was just eating too many blueberry donuts from DD’s).
12. A Great Necklace/Fun Jewelry
Same goes for jewelry as it does with the scarf…have fun with jewelry like you would pregnant or not! I always love earrings, but finding a great necklace (I’ve loved this one ever since I purchased!) to accentuate the neckline of your top is always a great way to add a little something to your outfit.
13. Long Layering Tees and Tanks
Basic = perfect. Since nobody wants to spend a ton of money on a maternity wardrobe, stocking up on a few good, solid tees and tanks will help expand your wardrobe from season to season. They’re perfect for layering, and in many cases, you don’t even need to buy maternity tops…just buy a size or two up and, that way, you’ll likely save some money, too!
14. A Good Pair of Maternity Jeans
Ladies, I think we can all relate in some way or another when I say that jeans shopping is never easy. Finding “the” pair can be quite a challenge, and when you’re pregnant, nothing changes. Personally, I’ve found that I’m most comfortable in maternity jeans that don’t have a full belly panel. These jeans from Old Navy have become a major favorite of mine, even though they do stretch a bit, I prefer the fit of them much better. I’ve debated on investing in a more expensive pair but, again, knowing they’re only worn for less than a year has always hindered my decision to purchase. So do what works best for you, BUT, make sure you’ve got at least one pair that you love!
15. Maternity Leggings
And lots of ‘em at that! I just got a new pair in my latest Stitch Fix delivery, which I love. And I’ve also had really good luck with the Secret Fit Belly Maternity Leggings from Motherhood. Sometimes I wear the panel full, and sometimes I fold it down under the bump. Either way, they’re ridiculously comfy and get worn multiple times a week!

Piko tops! It hides a bump if you’re still early and don’t want the world to know yet, plus you can wear them post-pregnancy.

Kohls is actually the first stop I made when I was looking for maternity clothes. I actually don’t think I was even looking – I was just in Kohls and wandered over to the maternity section, tried on 2 pairs of pants and a top and fell in love. These are the dress pants I wear to work and they are the most comfortable that I’ve found thus far at 20 weeks.

Have you heard of Le Tote? It’s basically a clothing rental company that has an entire maternity collection. It’s somewhere around $60/month and I can usually get 2 boxes each month (you just send the whole thing back once you’re done). I feel like that’s fairly reasonable especially if it keeps me from buying things! I love it because I get to wear nice maternity clothes and actually rotate (I always get sooo sick of my basics by the end)…especially with my work wardrobe.
Laura O'Dell says
I love big chunky open sweaters! Definitely my fav thing to wear with leggings and boots!
