Fun at the Farm

By Courtney 5 Comments

Weekday mornings are always a little bit crazy and a lot rushed for us over here. This past Monday was slightly different because Lucas had a special field trip with his preschool that I was going to be joining him on.

Between getting ready for that and getting Alex ready and out the door with Jay to go to daycare, I never had the chance to check any sort of news or social media until later in the day. So it wasn’t until we were at the field trip when I first heard about the news of Las Vegas, and my heart immediately sank.

My deepest thoughts and sympathies are with the people of Las Vegas and all of those who have been affected by the mass shooting. It’s always a bit difficult as a blogger when addressing a tragedy such as this, because acknowledging it and then carrying on with a normal blog post sometimes just seems odd, but I couldn’t not address it. And I suppose part of that is why I waited until today to post. So as with anything, we still must carry on with what we do.

And I was feeling extra fortunate to be able to spend the morning with Lucas at the apple orchard with his preschool friends.

The class visited Indian Ladder Farms, which is a nearby farm/orchard that I hadn’t been to since way before the blogging days (if I remember correctly, I think Jay and I may have skipped classes one {high} school afternoon to go apple picking?!).

The kids have been learning all about apples and Johnny Appleseed in class, and I loved the adorable little hats they all had to wear on the trip.

The weather really couldn’t have been more perfect for our tour, where we learned all about how the apples are picked and stored.

And we even got to see how the cider is made, too. Apple cider is always soooo good at this time of year, and I’m kicking myself for not purchasing any before we left!

After seeing how the cider was made, we all took a little “hike” up Mount Mac, then came back down the hill to visit all of the animals on the farm, including cows, goats, chickens, and more.

Once the tour was over, everyone finished up with some apples, donuts, and cider.

Well, the kids did, at least. I went and made sure to pick up half a dozen cider donuts before leaving because they looked WAY too good not to…and I was right. WOW, so good.

And once everyone finished their treats, we did some quick apple picking before calling it a day! The apple picking was actually pretty quick, so we may still need to go back out as a family soon, because this mama needs some apple treats!!

What a fun day :) You are right - apple cider donuts are the best. Nothing beats them fresh at a cider mill though!

Fall in upstate NY is the best! This is why we suffer through winter - to enjoy apple season!

Apple-picking is SUCH a fun outing but still seems so foreign to me being from New Orleans! Last year was actually the first time I've ever seen an apple tree in real life. Crazy, right? But now that I live in DC, I'm a huge apple-picking, pumpkin patch-going, apple cider donut convert, and I cannot wait to spend an afternoon at a farm soon! It's so cool that Lucas gets to experience this as a kid! Also those hats are precious. I wish I was this creative during my teaching days!
